EURYA GETS INDEPENDENCE! September 11, 2017 Marston, Eurya
Footage of people celebrating today in the center of the country's capital, Marston.
Breaking news! Just today Eurya's independence was officially embarked in the world. Following several attempts of the regions to get independence from Taejin, the referendum that took place this week resulted in the people's ultimate wishโtheir independence!
The story from the top
The regions has been seeking their independence for years now. The attempts on getting independence have been numerous since 1952. In 1968, the governor of Washagon, Paul Hurley attempted to overtake the President of Taejin, but was unsuccessful. After that, there were never any moves from the government of Taejin that indicated that the region would ever become a country, despite the attempts of the local governors. The only time the country got close to their independence was in 2008, when an independence referendum was planned to take place. However, it was later shut down by the government of Taejin. The behavior of the Taejin government towards this issue caused countless protests from Euryi people; many of them resulted into several casualties and injuries, mainly on the side of Eurya.
The deciding referendum
In 2017, the governor of Eurya managed to succeed into getting the referendum for the region's independence from Taejin. The support towards the independence on behalf of the Euryi people was big; several campaigns were started in favor of the country's independence. EurYES was the main campaign group for independence, while Better Together was the main campaign group in favor of the regions staying as part of the country of Taejin. Prominent issues raised during the referendum included which currency an independent Eurya would use, public expenditure, union memberships, and oil matters.
The referendum question, which voters answered with "Yes" or "No", was "Should Eurya be an independent country?" Eligible to vote in the referendum was anyone with citizenship in the country of Taejin. Despite the fact that most opinion polls wanted the referendum to fail, eventually the "Yes" side won with a total of 33,179,898 (56.05%) voting in favor of independence and 26,019,267 (43.95%) voting against. The turnout of 89.97% was the highest recorded for an election or referendum in the country since the introduction of universal suffrage. The general reaction to the result was positive; celebrations were held in several locations within the country. However, there were several incidents were Taejin citizens came into conflict with Euryi citizens.
A brand new country
The official language spoken by Euryi citizens is English, although Spanish is also a recognized language with a big part of the country speaking the language. The flag of the country, which was inspired by the flag of the state of Michisota, demonstrates an anchor inside a white diamond that is on top of a two-colored base of dark green and blue. The country has been divided into states, the same states that existed when the country was part of Taejin. The city of Marston, located in the state of Washagon, has been named the capital city of the country.
As a new emerging country in the scene, Eurya has several things yet to establish. There are currently plans for a series of elections, including a presidential election. Until a new president is appointed, the most recent elected governor of Washagon, Carl Smith, has been appointed as acting president of the country. Decisions on major issues, such as the currency, are to be made after a president and a congress have been elected. However, as there are some issues that need to be dealt immediately, the right has been given to the current acting president of the country to make such decisions. President Smith has already started negotiations with other nations in order to start establishing relations.
