In our life we've heard so many popular songs, that it might even be hard to remember some of them. Even worse - do we really know, what's the original behind this popular song (let's be honest - too many covers by popular artists have taken all the glory away from the original)? Well, I can say, that in recent years I've come to know many of such songs.. though my next entry won't be one of them (because I knew the original before the covers).
There is a high chance, that at some point of your life you've heard of a song called "Миллион алых роз" (eng: A Million Roses or Million Scarlet Roses). And if you have heard this song, you probably thought, that the original comes from Alla Pugacheva. Well, now is your chance to learn something new, because the original actually comes from Latvia (composer, lyrics, singers - all of it). Alla only made this song popular, but she wasn't the first one to perform this song. In Latvia we all know the original, but worldwide it's not so well known.
There are rumors, which caused a scandal, that the original actually comes from 1969, when it (supposedly) was performed by Googoosh, but it's a fake information (many people mention that in comments of the song, plus I found multiple articles in russian, which prove, that it's fake). To be fair - People actually have recognized it to be Farzaneh's voice in videos titled as Googoosh. Farzaneh did perform the song (in persian titled "Gole Rose" (watch here)), but it happened only in 2008. People say, that Googoosh has never actually performed this song. Think of it what you will, but at least the truth is out there and now I tell it to you.
This song has been recorded and performed in many languages - some I quickly found are persian, english, korean, japanese, russian (can't forget that). (To see the songs, click the language). These are just few I could quickly find... here's a list of more artists/languages - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Million_Roses#Recordings All these though are covers (I'm talking about lyrics) of the russian version, but some people have attempted to translate the latvian lyrics in korean (in comments of the videos) and in french (here) - I can't guarantee them to be correct though. I've attempted to translate them in english in spoiler down below myself.
Another interesting fact (before I forget) - this is actually the only song Līga Kreicberga (6 y-o at the time) has sung professionally, which made her famous in Latvia back in the day.
Long story short - I've decided to give this original song a go. I hope you'll like it as well
Year - 1981 (let's continue the 80's with the 80's)
Aija Kukule & Līga Kreicberga - "Dāvāja Māriņa"
(3:34 onwards, please!)

PIC:
I know it's not the best quality, but it's the only one with them (both original singers and the composer) together, that I could find. The other pics with only the singers aren't very good imo.
Lyrics (my approx. translation):
Dāvāja Māriņa (Gave Māriņa)
When in my childhood
I got hurt by others
I hurried, I hurried
To look for my mother
To clutch, to clutch
With my hands her apron
And mother to me, mother to me
Then chuckling said:
Refrain:
Gave, gave, gave Māriņa (female name)
To a girl, to a girl, to a girl her life
Only forgot, only forgot, only forgot to give
To the girl, to the girl, to the girl happiness.
So time passed, time passed
And mother's not by my side anymore
Only by myself, only by myself
Now I have to deal with everything
But in those moments, in those moments
When heart stings in bitterness of pain
I to myself, to myself
Then chuckling say:
Gave, gave, gave Māriņa (female name)
To a girl, to a girl, to a girl her life
Only forgot, only forgot, only forgot to give
To the girl, to the girl, to the girl happiness.
How forgotten, forgotten
Everything already in days' troubles!
Till suddenly, suddenly
I jump from surprise
Because I hear, I hear
Wrapped in her thoughts
Whispering quietly, quietly
My daughter smiling thus:
Gave, gave, gave Māriņa (female name)
To a girl, to a girl, to a girl her life
Only forgot, only forgot, only forgot to give
To the girl, to the girl, to the girl happiness.
When in my childhood
I got hurt by others

this where i first heard the Song (anyone who grew up pre/post USSR knows this Cartoon very well)
That's just one of... the song was so popular (and still is quite popular), that it would be hard to mention everything, where it has been used...
