Category 1 : Send a song that represents a European trait
Timeslot: 2:19+
This category honestly left me confused for a very long time. It's vague, and as an American I found it hard to come up with good ideas for what I wanted to say. My answer? Find common ground between both Americans and Europeans. And the direction I went came shortly after this realization. Racism is a major issue in both America and Europe. Hell, Europe is origin of Racism as we know it in our lives today, a direct result of colonialism and the god complexes of Europeans beginning with Colonialism and can still at times be seen today. Europe struggles with racism in many different ways. Black people living in Europe often face discrimination from White Europeans for things such as walking down the street quietly in many countries. The Romani people face discrimination in much of europe. The populations of Italy, Greece, and Slovakia hold negatives view of the Romani people at over 75%! However, the most obvious and newsworthy victim of European racism today are Muslims, especially refugees fleeing countries such as Libya, Syria, and Iraq. Greece is abandoning refugees at sea. Sweden is seeing a rise in alt-right activity fueled by Islamophobia. Hungary put up walls to keep refugees out. Many Europeans are still afraid of people who are not like them, and assume everyone with brown skin, black skin, or born to a certain culture are all just as bad as the very worst member of their community. And while we ourselves may not believe these ideas, we cannot deny that we know people who do.
KWAYE's Little Ones addresses this point of view candidly. The chorus of the song screams
"He tries to break the mould A life cannot be told Put me in a box, I don't wanna Limit myself to these four lines They may try to keep us down but know that The spirit lives in the Little Ones"
these lyrics scream to the world that one person's actions do NOT represent their community. The song screams that these minority communities are filled with good. The children of these communities are just like any other child: a young person simply trying to survive, thrive, make friends, and live their own life peacefully. Other lyrics in the song talk about the discrimination faced by minorities across Europe ("He wanted part of the crowd when they wanted nothing to do with you") and that KWAYE has faced exclusion and ridicule purely because of his skin tone. ("take your label and wear the right color"). However, KWAYE remains determined and optimistic throughout the song, a subtle acknowledgement of the slow changing attitude of Europeans. ("You wanna take him down? He'll get up again.... I'm not tryna be scared, no").
Europe (along with most of the White World) is Racist. Europe is afraid of those who don't fit in. KWAYE wants to break the mold and prove them wrong.
LYRICS:
It's complicated but it seemed like the right thing to do He wanted part of the in crowd when they wanted nothing to do with you
Was it the right thing? It doesn't matter Take your label and wear the right colour You see that in our hands we hold the plans And the innocence of the little ones
He tries to break the mould A life cannot be told Put me in a box, I don't wanna Limit myself to these four lines They may try to keep us down but know that The spirit lives in the little ones
She never really was a "by the book" kind of girl (She was living with two sides) But the woman within, she kept hidden because she didn't trust the world (She was living in two minds)
Was it the right thing? It doesn't matter Take your label and wear the right colour You see that in our hands we hold the plans And the innocence of the little ones
She tries to break the mould A life cannot be told Put me in a box, I don't wanna Limit myself to these four lines They may try to keep us down but know that The spirit lives in the little ones
You wanna take him down? He'll get up again Try to take her smile? She'll laugh harder Got his eyes fixed on the prize so don't you categorize my brother Put me in a box, I don't wanna Limit myself to these four lines, no I'm not tryna be scared, no I'm not tryna be scared, no
We try to break the mould A life cannot be told Put me in a box, I don't wanna Limit myself to these four lines They may try to keep us down but know that The spirit lives in the little ones
Said in our hands we hold the plans to the (innocence of the little ones) I said in our hands we hold the plans to (innocence of the little ones) I said in our hands we hold the plans to (innocence of the little ones) The innocence of the little ones (innocence of the little ones)
| "NUOVA REGISTRAZIONE 527" by MARA SATTEI S8E1: United in Diversity
Catergory 2 : Send a song that represents a European Country assigned to you: Italy.
Timeslot: 1:53+
Mara Sattei is an Italian pop and hip-hop artist from Fiumicino, Italy. She's a new name on the scene, and has spent the past year collaborating with the producer Tha Supreme to release her own music. Her songs are titled Nuova Registrazione with numbers at the end, which simply translated to "New Recording 527." According to Sattei, her song titles are meant to show that the lyrics of her songs are her thoughts on social issues, personal issues, and other topics. Her songs are not meant to be commercialized pop, but rather her point of view on the world. Unfortunately, none of her songs have been translated to English. However, the song itself is powerful and strong, and I think it does a great job at displaying the emerging talent in both Italy and other European countries and the sonic shift they are pushing. Younger artists are leaning towards hip-hop, trap, and other genres often associated with minorities in the mainstream pop soundscape. Whether this is good or bad, whether this is Europeans slowly beginning to accept more foreign ideas or something else is open to interpretation. However, I feel the changing European pop soundscape is representative of the general changing attitude of many Europeans.
LYRICS:

Week 1A: European Trait
"Onomatopoetry"
When looking for, or more precisely, choosing a song, I was guided by the darker sides of Europe. I was looking for something in a calm tone, but also a bit mysterious. The theme is quite unusual, but I found it interesting. Destruction after the Second World War. The Second World War did a lot of damage, and I was looking for a background that would, in a sense, fit into the pictures of ruined European cities.
I will also refer to the unification of Europe, cooperation and, inter alia, its rebuilding after the Second World War. The European Union is an example of connection and living in harmony. Common reconstruction and common desire to pursue goals and ideals.
Timeslot: 03:04
Week 1B: EU Member Country
"Rise Now"
Estonia is quite a minor European country. It is a small Baltic state. However, I believe that the country has little potential when it comes to the music industry. I chose Ingrid Lukas with a song collaborating with a Swiss music producer. The song doesn't fully reflect the atmosphere of Estonia, but I just wanted to show that not everything has to be standard, and sometimes national musicians leave the patterns. Which is very interesting.

SHIRLEY SIXCHINS-EUROPEAN TRAIT- "Oneness, unity" GREENTEA PENG - HU MAN
1:15"Hu Man" is a song about identity, our attachment to it and how we need to strip it all away to once again strive towards a unity, a oneness. Modern Europe is viewed as a safehaven for all kinds of people, desirable, where life can be lived. However this vision is being tore apart at its core. Distractions from real issues are causing conflict. Brexit, racism, climate change inaction, migrant crisis inaction, mass poverty, war crimes under the guise of aid, inequality, geopolitical tension, the far right all pull us further away from our common goal.
Peng has described "Hu Man" as 'an exploration of self and our attachment to identity, especially in this modern age. Hu Man is a war cry from the battlefield of mind, calling to the divine Mother to take this ego, take this head, to remove all these words and man made constructs and take me, take us, back to centre. Back to oneness, forward to unity. In Lak'ech Ala K'in, I am you you are me, is a Mayan saying I encountered during a Ceremony in Mexico and it's stayed with me always. I find it very fitting for the times we find ourselves in, such shifting paradigms.' In the video we see a man screaming his heart out, passion for his beliefs, as they get stripped away one by one he embraces a calmness.
"Hu Man" is an offering of peace and healing to the collective in these intense times, we just need to find it within ourselves. Give ourselves a chance - once again find clarity."Searching for balance
Praying for clarity
Ma stripped me naked
Take this identity
Tell me it's unity"
-SONG FROM EUROPE: SWEDEN- "Global music powerhouse"AGNES - FINGERS CROSSED 1:23
Sweden is a world renowned producer of music and arguably always has been. I felt receiving Sweden was a double edged sword, as I have a lot more to work with but the expection also is higher to present something great! Part of me wanted to honour the legendary ABBA because they deserve it. Ultimately I decided to present an entry that is pure pop perfection - something the Swedes do so effectively and effortlessly.
Agnes originally rose to prominence winning Idol Sweden as a teenager and went on reach international success scoring a pan-European whopper of a hit "Release Me" but has managed to re-emerge with a bang on the music scene with the disco pop bop "Fingers Crossed". The song is inspired by time spent embracing spirituality, travelling around the world and meeting new people.
"Fingers crossed" is an unabashed exclamation that nothing is impossible! The world is limitless! Love is all around! Cheesy, kitsch, and hopeful lyrics of love really add to the Swedish effect. Cheese sells and it always has and always will do! The song does what pop is supposed to do. Make you FEEL GOOD! And Sweden knows how to make some, if not the best, pop in the world! It is topped off with a slick video.
"My fingers crossed
Your heart is the answer
Too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off you"

European Trait: Open-minded
Hourglvss - Supreme Beings
2:46+
I have selected "Supreme Beings" Hourglvss. This song expresses about being open-minded embracing and accepting people for who they are.
"rainbow leads all the possibilities"
The song expresses the basic values of people coming together in unity to have freedom, to be able to express themselves, equality and to be free from discrimination. Accepting people no matter who they are. Being able to talk about things that were not talked about.
"creatures coming together
dancing forever
covered in feathers"
No matter how difficult times gets we can come together and try to overcome the issues while being equal and free, people are able to accept people for who they are"
"shiny seas scattering the energies
sparkly lashes that are yet to feel the scene "
European people are becoming more progressive accepting people from many backgrounds including heritage, sexuality, race, gender, and religion. In countries such as Ireland, UK, Estonia, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands To list a few countries where the people are open-minded and accepting to change compared to the past. Compared to years ago where people weren’t able to live how they are today. Looking at other countries today people in other countries are not as open-minded as people in Europe and willing to accept people.
"feeling free in the frame of the looking glass"
It shows how open-minded European people are in our very own forums as we have members that have lots of different backgrounds with differences and they are accepted in this community for people to be themselves and the be expressive.
lyrics:
I can see, now the smoke is settling Dancing queens, lead me to a freer scene I can see everything in front of me rainbow leads all the possibilities
creatures coming together dancing forever covered in feathers
feeling free in the frame of the looking glass spread my dreams through the futuristic path supreme beings of electricity
I believe the force I feel inside of me cradling bodies who are yet to see shiny seas scattering the energies sparkly lashes that are yet to feel the scene
creatures coming together dancing forever covered in feathers
feeling free in the frame of the looking glass spread my dreams through the futuristic path supreme beings of electricity
Glimmering Foreseen feel me now let it all hang out
feeling free in the frame of the looking glass spread my dreams through the futuristic path supreme beings of electricity
EU country: Denmark
Mew - Water Slides
1:50+
Denmark has a vast music range and I feel very thankful for this country. I have chosen Mews Water Slides as they show a more electronic rock sound that is captivating to listen to and I think the Danish delegation in Eurovision should consider a sound like this. Lyrics Always not to exaggerated fights
Or to defy
Go away like you always do your entire life
You're saying bye
Fool in the night
Wake in the night
Oh let me go, old dinosaur
From the right to the wrong settle
For such a long time I didn't know if I'd find you
Say stop, made up, lying on the bathroom floor
(ah ah ah ah ah ah ah)
For such a long time I didn't know if I'd find you
Say stop, made up, lying on the bathroom floor
(ah ah ah ah ah ah ah)
Haunted all this time
Don't know how to fly
We know you're there
Flashlight as your guide
Sticky from your dye
Unfurling hair
Fool in the night
Stay in the night
Oh let me go, old dinosaur
From the right to the wrong settle, settle
Cover me with your long feathers
When I die
Circle me in your long feathers, feathers, feathers, feathers
So alive though our wolves might talk about it every day
Don't want to say no more now
'Cause we ain't gonna lie to you
We're writing cursive to
Our signs, our water slides
Don't don't
For such a long time I didn't know if I'd find you
(say stop, made up)
Lying on the bathroom floor

ANNA BORSHIN
SONG 1 A Song that represents a European trait For this week I went for the theme of regeneration, co-operation and acceptance. As we all know Europe wasn't always the most peaceful continent out there. Through centruries of war, conflict and battle, we as Europeans always found a way to recover from our past mistakes to a new and better place. We learnt from each other constantly and the futher we co-operated the more we grew close to one another, even when the solution wasn't insight. Our hatred towards other vanished into thin air. To illustrate this trait I went with:
![](http://i.imgur.com/u4hxPHX.png) KARSU "Siyah" Music & lyrics: Gunzo Revessi, Jacob Lucas and Karsu Dönmez
2:27+
Translation of the lyrics: I laughed, cried and loved I left and I was abandoned. I reached the final destination without looking back I couldn't open my eyes up I became blind until forever
I got up, I fell, I always went down. I lost all of my hopes. I put the lath so high that, I cried out quietly. I tried out with blood, tear but I couldn't cross.
As the stylus is broken, I gave up on everything, Once there was me in me, It vanished into thin air.
SONG 2 A Song that represents an EU member state I got assigned Finland for this week song challenge. And oh boy it was a challenge. I went with a song that's 100% about Finland and it's people. In the song a diverse set people sing about their love for Finland and what's it about being Finnish and what sets them as a nation apart from all other countries in not only Europe but the whole world. And this song is:
![](http://i.imgur.com/GYtAXmM.png) KANSALAISET FEAT. MEDBORGARE "Olen suomalainen" Music & lyrics: Kari Tapio
2:10+
Translation of the lyrics: Oh if only the others in the world knew What can exist under the sky There is a nation, from whoms tears many oceans could be made There are many lonely people here, but So much forbidden love Which even paintings or longing love songs can't explain enough Life here is hard work And there's rarely any luck The only one who knows that is the Finn. Here under the Pole Star There is that earthly home of mine I sing about life Because I am Finnish I sing about love, there is a man and a woman Under the Pole Star Lives the Finn In this country there is a stubborn folk Friends who are close to each other The only things that can separate them are death and law We walk uphill with a sad soul, we rise while biting our teeth together* After a bend of the road we go to another bend just to see it wasn't worth it after all Life here is hard work And there is rarely any luck The only one who knows that is the Finn.
