Michigan is bringing melanin for once Posted: Detroit, 21 February 2021 |
After 5 years of white singers in the contest, it's high time to bring in a menanated lead singer into the contest for the Great Lakes State. Detroit is a hub for music in the densely populated Southeastern region of the state, and the city itself is known for its high amount of black creatives. 5 years, and no melanin, that needs to be changed. So who's going to be the one to set this new precident?
I've been fraternizing with the stars
They showed me exactly where I'm supposed to be
They showed me exactly where I'm supposed to be
Meet: Jaye Prime

Jaye Prime, the representative of Michigan in the 2021 Edition of United States of Song
Jaye Prime is an experimental R&B artist who, like her hometown of Detroit, MI, carves her own musical path while the rest of the world takes note. Pulling inspiration from creative minds like The-Dream, Marvin Gaye and Solange, Prime has crafted an innovative and compelling brand of R&B: a combination of sensual melodic elements with hard-hitting instrumentation sitting in an undeniable and consistent pocket. Prime cut her teeth as a singer on Detroit’s underground hip-hop scene, where she learned to imbue her singing with the strength, heaviness, and finesse you'll hear from many of the city's finest MCs (though she's no slouch when it comes to rapping, either). Constantly aiming to leave her listeners feeling joy in being present as their true selves, Prime puts her best foot forward in staying genuine to who she is, whether she's on or off the stage.
No stranger to the contest, Prime was one of the writers and a backing vocalist on the best placing entry from Michigan to date: the 2018 entry, Queen sung by Flint Eastwood (now known by their name, Jax Anderson). Prime's first song hit Youtube in January of 2014, and since then, she has released a number of songs, culminating in an album that was released in 2017, as well as one that's slated to drop this year. The song that she'll perform in Minneapolis is a pre-released single that will feature on that upcoming album, as well as another song that was cut from consideration to be sent in the contest due to profane lyrics. However, we hope that you will all enjoy the beats of this trip to the Vice City.
