Hello everyone... the real fun begins. Welcome to...
The 2021 STATE SONG SELECTIONS
Four states are holding a song selection to choose their entry! As announced earlier, they are California, Minnesota, New York, and Texas. Each selection has eight songs (submitted from many of you!) We need you to decide who's representing the most popular American states. We chose the songs based either on song variety, submitter variety, whether it fit the rules of the contest, and several other factors (one song had to be DQ'd because it refused to be unblocked by YouTube - I already notified the submitter. Another I had to do stupid stuff to the MV, you'll see it in the NY video.) If your song didn't make it, I apologize. The order of the songs was completely randomized for each selection. The winner will be decided on a 10-8-6-4-2-1 voting scale. Below are the recaps, playlist links, and a brief sentence about each band/entry. I of course encourage listening to the full playlist, a recap doesn't always do a song justice. But sometimes we ain't got time for that so do what you need 'ta do.
CALIFORNIA
01. Will Jay - "Lies" Former member of the boy band IM5. Born in Los Angeles, he is of Chinese and German descent.
02. Olivia Reid - "Visitor" Singer-songwriter from the Sacramento area. Graduate of Clive Davis' Institute of Recorded Music.
03. The Anix - "Die With You" Formerly a rock band, now a solo electronic rock project by singer Brandon Smith.
04. Jenny O. - "Old Habits" Rock singer-songwriter who grew up in New York but started her music career in LA in 2010.

07. HITHA - "We Will Last" 15 years old, born to Indian parents (Karnataka). The song was written in response to the pandemic.
08. Ella Vos - "Burning Bridges" Los Angeles native Ella Vos enjoys mixing indie pop music with synth pop production. MINNESOTA
01. Pelham - "Am I A Fool" Singer-songwriter from Minneapolis. Songs are often compared to Ed Sheeran or John Mayer.
02. Ashley DuBose - "Love Tingz" Competed on The Voice. I know it looks tropical, but the video is actually shot in a famous state park in Minnesota!
03. Dad Bod - "Spirits" Indie rock band from Minneapolis led by singer Callie Moreno. Not to be confused with the Utahn band of the same name.
04. Early Eyes - "Wander" Described as a "pop-jazz" band from Minneapolis. Released their first EP together in 2018.
05. Yam Haus - "wOw!" Indie pop band from Minneapolis; a bit of a tease: not named for vegetables, but yam = You Are Me.
06. Buffalo Fuzz - "Too Young To Die" Heavy blues band from Minneapolis (seeing a pattern?); you'll definitely get a prog-rock vibe from them.
07. Doomtree - "Five Alive" 7-member hip hop collective of friends from the Twin Cities area who have been active for 15+ years.
08. Graveyard Club - "Dreamland" Indie pop band from Represented MN in 50 States of Song 2017 with "Nightcrawler", but failed to qualify.

06. Yaeji - "When I Grow Up" Korean-American artist born in Queens. Moved to NYC to become a disk jockey; released her first EP in 2015.
07. Public Library Commute - "Summertime" Sampling-pop collective led by singer Conrad Hsiang, grew up in New Jersey but went to school in upstate NY.
08. moistbreezy - "Contact" Female electro-pop singer from Brooklyn. Considers Charlie XCX and Dua Lipa as biggest influences.
TEXAS

08. PRIZM - "All Night" Dallas-based duo consisting of Krisluv and Danni James. Base their music on the 80's synth dance scene.
VOTEClick here to use the voting form.
You can also send me the specific points (10-8-6-4-2-1) or send a full ranking if that's easier. I will tabulate the points after the deadline, and announce the winners sometime in March. You don't need to vote for all the states at once; you don't even need to vote for every state (but it would be cool if you did ). The deadline to vote is MARCH 13th, 2021.
*As the state selections are going on*, we will begin announcing the entries for the other states in this thread, including those submitted by forumers. We're already ahead of schedule (compared to last year) by about a week, so it's looking like by the end of March we may be able to begin the First Semifinal. Which would be insane.
Which territories will join the 50 states this year? Stay tuned to find out... We wish the best of luck to all the songs out there, and let's have fun! Let's do this!!

Voted. I must say, New York has my favorite state selection this year. I'm also a bit amused that Texas has two songs called "Time" and "No Time."

You've all been patient - my annual tardiness should be a meme at this point... BUT starting with today's post, we'll begin sharing 5 songs per post a couple times a week that have been selected for United States of Song 2021.You already know several of them because they were selected by forumers, and we are so thrilled to have many of you directly involved in the process. Thank you for taking a chance on this different style of contest, I get that it's much slower but we're aiming for dat qualité. For each of the songs, you'll be able to watch them below / learn a little more about the artists and their style of music. Please let me know if any of the videos below are blocked for you. North Carolina Sylvan Esso - "Ferris Wheel" Submitted by Derek The electropop duo from Durham, NC were formed in 2013 and strive to make danceable tracks that are also "a bit weird and paradoxical" in that the songs sound happy but the lyrics are drenched in sorrow. With "Ferris Wheel", they break a bit away from that formula and write a cute little song about finding someone to dance with in a crowded amusement park. Colorado Neoma - "Regresen" Submitted by MaRtIn Described as one of the hottest indie bands in Ecuador, it was shocking to many fans when they up and moved to Denver in 2019 to a) record their new album "Lunares", and b) move to a place where they could be supported in their style of music and life. "Regresen" (Spanish tr: "Come back") is a mysterious but mellow and melodic indie pop single, led with the glossy vocals of singer Karla Huiracha. (Also before you throw your hands up to protest their credentials, the two-person band were born in New Jersey and Mississippi before their parents both independently moved them to Ecuador. So they were born in the USA.) Iowa
Ancient Posse - "Abundantly Strong" Submitted by Gregory (inactive) This duo from Des Moines is private about how they came to work together in music, but the energy they both bring to their music is impossible to miss. Kamillah brings her melodies and visuals, and Steve (mostly) produces the songs. They describe their music as 'soul pop' but I think it's more like a blend of a bunch of different elements. The video - and possibly even the song itself - stem from being on lockdown in NYC and needing to find a way to get through. Michigan Jaye Prime - "Vice City" Submitted by Chante™ "Jaye Prime is an experimental R&B artist who, like her hometown of Detroit, MI, carves her own musical path while the rest of the world takes note. Pulling inspiration from creative minds like The-Dream, Marvin Gaye and Solange, Prime has crafted an innovative and compelling brand of R&B: a combination of sensual melodic elements with hard-hitting instrumentation sitting in an undeniable and consistent pocket. Prime cut her teeth as a singer on Detroit’s underground hip-hop scene, where she learned to imbue her singing with the strength, heaviness, and finesse you'll hear from many of the city's finest MCs." To read more about Jaye, read Chante's post: forum.songcontests.eu/post/902741/threadIllinois Silver Sphere - "Ghosts!" Submitted by Yoav ( terabyteofpuppypics ) Sophie Cates was born in LA but grew up in Chicago and was on track to release her first EP when the quarantines hit. She says of her EP, "I wrote about the most magical painful euphoric life changing lesson-learning time in my life." This pop singer is not just a follow-up to Emily Blue a couple years back - she stands on her own with a take-charge personality that I think you'll like. To get a sense of the type of music she creates, one of her songs is called "Boys R Dumb, Duh!" - so there you go. I'm dumb
That's all we got for today! Stay tuned to this thread for future song choices for the other states! And don't forget to vote for the currently ongoing state selections (CA, MN, NY & TX)! I've extended the deadline by a week.*waves frantically* Go on! Do it!

Malia Civetz is gonna represent Nevada in Minnesota After a period of relative silence from the broadcaster, we are ready to reveal the Nevadan hopeful who will represent the Silver state in Minnesota. During the past two months, a committee made up by past participants and jurors listened and studied tens of entries to determine which one would be the best choice for Nevada. On 20 February 2021, the final decision was made and officialized. After Amy Guess's qualification last edition with her song Holy Hell, the next Nevada representative is gonna be none other than Hawaiian-Nevadan singer Malia Civetz. Born and raised between Honolulu and Vegas, Malia graduated and still lives in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. She's been singing since she was a young teen and has gained recognition from a variety of international stars, including Tay Tay, who also reportedly added Malia to her personal Spotify playlist!Malia Civetz • Disrespectful Disrespectful was released on 24 July 2020. The song is part of her debut EP "The Flip" and was written by Malia Civetz, Alessandro Lindblad, Donna Weiss, Jackie DeShannon, Jacob Kasher Hindlin and Ross Golan.
Timeslot • 1:48 - 2:13
Nevada in United States of Song The Silver State debuted in United States of Song in the first edition, hosted in 2016, with talented Chadwick Johnson and his Song from another time, which scored a 17th place in a final of 20. The following edition the state achieved its first non-qualification with Is It Too Late? by Thr3card, ending up 23th in a semifinal of 25. Our state's worst result, however, came in 2018, when the electronic duo Elevator came last in their semi with just 8 points. Angel Groove would achieve, in 2019, Nevada's second final, but would not beat the state's best result. In 2020, Nevada qualified again and came 22th in the final. Malia Civetz will represent Nevada in 2021, hoping to continue this apparently successful streak!

We are sharing 5 songs a couple times a week that have been selected for United States of Song 2021.
Songs 7-11Most of today's selections come from states and places where we only had one song to choose from, but we gladly and happily accept them. Virginia Taylor Acorn - "Sinister" Submitted by Derek This 26-year-old singer is originally from Lynchburg, Virginia and now works in Nashville. Self-identifying as a country-pop singer, Acorn's music doesn't rest in any particular genre. She auditioned in The X Factor USA and American Idol before she got her big break in the NashNext Competition (something I wish I knew existed earlier!) Delaware Reece Ratliff - "Compass" Submitted by Gregory (inactive)A native of Wilmington, Delaware, indie pop singer-songwriter Reece Ratliff picked up his first guitar at the age of two, took the requisite guitar lessons in grade school, and cut his teeth in his local chapter of School of Rock, playing the classics from the Beatles to AC/DC in the school’s prestigious house band, DE-Team. Drawing on his own musical influences, such as Christian French and Lauv, Ratliff began expressing himself through songwriting. U.S. Virgin Islands
Tia - "Nice Up" Submitted by Gregory (inactive) We excitedly welcome our first U.S. territory entry announced for this season, and it's a debut! The U.S. Virgin Islands will be represented by St. Croix-born reggae artist Tia. Although these islands are more well-known for their 'quelbe' style of music, Tia notes that it's "not her lane" and that "reggaeton and dancehall just sound better!" Welp, that answers it! But what do you think? Ohio KIITA - "Thinking About You" Chosen by Batman Beyond ; submitted by Gregory (inactive)She may be only in her teens, but KIITA has already emerged on some Billboard charts as a future contender on the pop scene. Named after an Alice In Wonderland character and hailing from Columbus, the alt-pop track's simplistic video is a sign of 2020. She uses the positive and negative energy in her life to write lyrics and words for her future songs. The song is "from previous feelings about a boy, we had been in a relationship that went downhill but (she) still loved him. It was a tricky decision but (she) chose herself because she needed time to heal." Washington J GRGRY - "Don't Ever Give Up" Submitted by DerekAs you can see by the video's thumbnail, this music video won the Portland Film Festival 2020's Best Music Video award. But they are from Tacoma, and the video was shot in the Olympic Peninsula area in Washington state. The queer pop artist remarks that they wrote this song - lyrics, melody, rhythms, everything - in 30 minutes late one night, and promptly collapsed in bed. The next day, Jay had to go to the hospital because they had pneumonia in both lungs! So: are you gonna vote for Jay to give them justice for their dedication to music??
That's all we got for today! Stay tuned to this thread for future song choices for the other states! Don't forget to vote for the currently ongoing state selections (CA, MN, NY & TX). We've extended the deadline by a week, so you have 7 more days to vote!

We are sharing 5 songs a couple times a week that have been selected for United States of Song 2021.
Songs 12-16We continue to fill out some entries from a variety of different genres and experimental sounds. Some of what you hear below may shock you... 0:) Hawaii Kūkahi - "Rage!" Submitted by Pablo (non-SCF) Born and raised in Honolulu, the 21-year-old singer won a Hawaiian award for Best Alternative Album in 2017 with his debut work. As a multi-talented instrumentalist and vocalist, Kukahi's "Rage!" is a personal song - clearly - and in 2020 we all had personal issues to contend. But "Rage!" may also be a struggle to place into any one genre. Just anticipate that your soul will leave the building at some point as you're listening; it did for me. Kentucky Chaz Cardigan - "Losing Touch" Submitted by Derek Cardigan was originally going to adopt the stage name 'Spazz Cardigan' but thankfully someone made mention to him how that wouldn't be so great for an international career. Since then, he's expanded from the alternative rock scene into adjacent genres. Billboard said of him in 2020 that Cardigan was a "certified 21st century pop artist, unafraid to mix sounds as he sees fit." New Hampshire Trafton - "Black Water" Submitted by Chante™ In recent years, New Hampshire (and Vermont) have tested out a variety of unexpected genres on the 50SS/USoS stage, to varying results. What do they have up their sleeves this year? Well, Trafton's type of music may be familiar to people here on the forum. But this type of sound is very current and new to the contest. The ambient electronic sounds blend the soothing vocals with unsettling instrumentations - almost as if floating on water itself. What do you think? West Virginia Christian Lopez - "Tanglin'" Artist chosen by Derek and terabyteofpuppypics We had two people recommend Lopez to return this year for West Virginia; he's our first returning artist of this edition. It was just a matter of choosing which song. He last participated in 2018 with this folk-rock banger and narrowly missed qualifying, which has been a regular theme for this mountainous state. He comes back now with a shaggier hairdo and a polished sound to his music. But is the song good enough? Can West Virginia get back to the Final? North Dakota Will Dakota - "Use Me" Submitted by Gregory (inactive) And we round off today with a state that, despite bordering the winning/host state, has very little success itself in this contest. But at least we aren't sending Tigirlily again instead we have a new artist on the scene who loves his home state so much that it's part of his stage name. Maybe he felt inspired by Montana's entry last year? Anyway, it's a slower country rock song, with an appeal to truer country music fans - and country music can do well in USoS. Is he the state's ticket to success?
That's all we got for today! Stay tuned to this thread for future song choices for the other states! Don't forget to vote for the currently ongoing state selections (CA, MN, NY & TX). You have about 3 more days to vote!

We are sharing 5 songs a couple times a week that have been selected for United States of Song 2021.
Songs 17-21The song-sharing slowed down a bit because of the state selections, but will speed up from here on out since the voting's over. The winners of the four state selections will be shared tomorrow sometime during the evening in USA time (March 21). Oklahoma Mothica - "Blue Hour" Submitted by Pablo (non-SCF) McKenzie Lewis grew up in the suburbs of Oklahoma City and attended an arts-focused high school to play guitar. She then moved to NYC in 2013 and would write music during breaks, eventually scoring a Soundcloud hit. This encouraged her to self-produce and release an EP in 2015. She's grown into her art since, and "Blue Hour" (also the name of her debut album) released last year. Her music balances creative wordplay and casual pop tendencies. Oregon Kat Cunning - "Supernova (tigers blud)" Submitted by Derek Just like Tessa Violet, you will find a bit of a rebel inside Katrina Cunningham. Originally from Gresham, Oregon, they are one of our first musicians who also act, as they play the part of Sabine on the Netflix TV show "Trinkets". They perform this song in the opening scene of the Season 2 Premiere. I like the bright alternative pop vibes this song gives off, a song of encouragement in an inviting way that isn't "Eye of the Tiger" or a crazed one-liner from Charlie Sheen. Nebraska The Belles - "Love Letter" Submitted by Gregory (inactive) This modern country family trio consists of mother and daughter Kelli and Maybelle with drummer Drew. Moving from Omaha in 2019 to work on their new music with Nashville's best, their big break came when traveling cross-country as the opening act for JoJo Siwa. In this way they are actually Nebraska's most well-known bands to ever be featured in our contest. Washington, D.C. Jake Miller ft. MILES - "Jumpin'" Artist chosen by terabyteofpuppypics Our second U.S. territory to join in on the fun will be represented by the young and talented Jake Miller, who celebrates ten years in the music business this year. Growing up in Florida, he moved to the D.C. area after winning the "Kick It With The Band" talent contest in 2011. Since then he's been on several tours and releases an EP pretty much every year. His music on "Jumpin'" has a chill breakdown but it still hits - and he walks that borderline with MILES, a relatively unknown rapper (I couldn't find much about him tbh.) Maryland Future Islands - "For Sure" Submitted by DerekThis synth pop band from Baltimore is also pretty well-known, and almost disqualified themselves permanently with this song last year (which reached #12 on the Triple-A chart.) Lead vocalist Sam Herring summarized the song as "about love and trust, because one cannot exist without the other". They performed (virtually ofc) the song on Stephen Colbert's late night show last spring.
That's all we got for today! So stay tuned tomorrow for our state selection winners!

UNITED STATES OF SONG 2021 - State Song Selection Results Today, the results of the four state song selections shall be announced. As always, thank you to those who voted, and to everyone who contributed entries. We have a small but powerful group of devoted and interested people involved in this contest, and if I could, I'd give you all a big hug! I tallied the votes, and in the spoilers below are the winners. We hope you enjoy them; it was a very close call in a couple of them. California : WINNER: Will Jay - "Lies" - 60 points (submitted by Derek ) In a lot of ways, this was no contest . Will is a former member of the boy band IM5. Born in Los Angeles, he is of Chinese and German descent. With a background in stage performance and boy-band fame, Will admits he has lied in his past. Jay says, "This is a song about the lies I've told everyone in my life, and the even bigger lies I've told myself." For example, he sings "I didn't go to college, what would I know about student loans" - which is a reference to his 2018 song "Broke" where he sings "Spendin' all this paper on student loans". ----------------- 2nd place: Ella Vos, "Burning Bridges" (Derek) - 44 points 3rd place: The Anix, "Die With You" (Derek) - 28 points Minnesota : WINNER: Graveyard Club - "Dreamland" - 56 pts (submitted by Gregory (inactive) ) Graveyard Club are an synth rock/pop band from Minneapolis. They represented Minnesota in 50 States of Song 2017 with "Nightcrawler", but failed to even qualify. Now they will automatically qualify to the Final! Lead singer Matthew Schufman taps into the 1950's crooner style of singing while Amanda Zimmerman's bass and vocals combine for the modern answer to The Cure. I personally thought Ashley DuBose would win this one! ----------------- 2nd place: Buffalo Fuzz, "Too Young To Die" (Derek) - 39 points 3rd place: Ashley DuBose, "Love Tingz" (Greg) - 31 points New York : WINNER: Gregory Dillon - "Plastic Ferrari" - 52 points (submitted by Derek ) Gregory Dillon is an LGBTQ artist from Brooklyn, originally from New Hampshire. He is out and proud, for sure - I found an article that asked him to describe himself in four words, and he responded 'Cries after sex often'. He also self-describes his music as 'euphoric pop' which I think is appropriate. The video is a bit amateur-ish but probably due to stay-at-home. It's still a bop! ------------- 2nd place: The Knocks & MUNA - "Bodies" (Thorir) - 44 points 3rd place: Overcoats - "Fire & Fury" (Greg) - 35 points Texas : WINNER: Jessie Frye - "Ocean" - 48 pts (submitted by Derek ) Similar to last year, the Texan state selection was hotly contested. There were four or five songs that all had a solid chance of winning. The voting came down to a few points here and there, and a couple of you really swayed the vote. But this winning song did receive at least 1 point from every juror. Jessie is a pop singer from the Dallas area. She lost by one point last year, placing 2nd in the 2020 Texas USoS selection with the song "Fantasy". Now she will get her chance to represent her state! ----------------- 2nd place: PRIZM, "All Night" (Derek) - 44 points 3rd place: Tayla Parx, "Dance Alone" (Derek) - 42 points Also I want to clarify there were more than just three people who submitted songs for these selections. That's... just the way the voting went. We had this happen last year, so maybe next year selections should be limited to one song per user? Lemme know below.
The announcements will continue Tuesday with five fresh songs. By the end of the week, we will announce the running order. I won't be tagging for future song announcements in this edition, so the next time you'll get actively tagged is when Semifinal One starts, which will be some time in April. Congratulations to all the winners!

We are sharing 5 songs a couple times a week that have been selected for United States of Song 2021.
Songs 26-30With the results of the state song selections now known, we can continue sharing the songs Committee have reviewed and approved for USoS 2021. Louisiana Miss Mojo - "Dangerous" Submitted by Gregory (inactive) Miss Mojo, who are from New Orleans, let their "signature blend of modern soul mixed with the rhythms funk culminate in smooth and soulful original music where “hip” and “pop” flawlessly coexist. They perform with captivating showmanship, stemming from years in New Orleans’ vibrant live music scene, and evoke a genuine love for their craft and passion for playing together. Led by the dynamic combo of Jenna Winston and Piper Browne, the band highlights the power of women through music." Massachusetts Isaac Dunbar - "Isaac's Insects" Artist suggested by Yoav and Derek From Barnstable, Isaac grew up a Lady Gaga fan and learned about synthesized music by trying to reproduce the songs on Artpop. His first unique single was released in 2017 on his blog, and since then his fame has only grown. Signed to RCA Records, he was to begin touring the USA and Europe in April 2020, but - for obvious reasons - that tour is on hold. Nonetheless, Dunbar's electric sound and atypical but modern songwriting is what people love most about him. We almost turned down the choice of Isaac because he is quite popular on the forums already. But he fits the rules of the contest and - let's be real - he's a good artist! Missouri Aron Wright with UNSECRET - "Home Again" Submitted by Pablo (non-SCF) (This song was originally submitted for Arkansas, but it was determined Aron Wright's connection to Missouri was stronger.) After losing in the Florida semifinal last year, UNSECRET's collaboration with Aron Wright, who grew up in St Louis, is a heartbreaking ballad that all of us can relate to. For some of us, it's been over a year now since we can be 'home' again. His career is expansive, but also very low-key - you won't be finding many music videos of him online, so we are settling for now on this video. Alabama Shallow Side - "Revival" Song submitted by Derek Hailing from the small town of Pullman, Shallow Side are a four piece band who's goal is "to spread the glory of modern rock and roll as far and as wide as they can to anyone who will listen." The lead vocalist, Eric Boatright, believes that "the energy and excitement of rock and roll is missing nowadays, and we need it now more than ever." The song speaks to those internal battles you must fight with your anxiety and emotions in the hope of that promise that something good's coming, and at that time, there will be this revival within us. Kansas Jordana - "Forgetter" Artist suggested by Derek Now based in Dallas, Jordana Nye makes what she refers to as 'bedroom pop' - so not very bombastic, minimalistic beats, and light-hearted vocals. She actually released two albums last year; the first was a re-release of her 2019 album debut. This song, "Forgetter," comes from the second album release in December 2020 and is about thoughts of yearning, regret, and forgetfulness in regards to an unnamed lover.
That's all we got for today! The running order will be announced tomorrow or Sunday. Cheers!
