PENNY D.LUX
SEASON 9 • EPISODE 2
Power to the People!
Send a song that covers political issues or makes a political statement.
Hello to all you Penny Fanatics. Your favourite cheap bitch is back and ready to show you some political realness. A very interesting challenge that miss Daniel has assigned for us.. After a search, Ive come across A song and Singer/Songwriter that fulfills this with power and justice.
Jayli Wolf - Child Of The Government
2:16+
Jayli Wolf is a multi-disciplinary (musician/actor/director/activist) artist. Jayli was raised in a Jehovah’s Witness Doomsday Cult as by-product of a controversial indigenous assimilation programme by the Canadian government and now looks towards reclaiming her her Anishinaabe/Cree identity.
"Child of the Government" takes us back to a personal and harrowing family story from the 1960s. During that space of time, the Canadian government & the Catholic Church did a brutal colonial experiment of removing Aboriginal children from their birth Native families and rehoming them into non-Aboriginal environments across the world. This effected Jayli's Wolf’s family, as her father was taken away from his mother at birth, essentially cutting their connection with their blood family.
"Mixed up the bloodline, lost to his people
Broken and cursed, wrapped him in evil
Smile for the priest now, God save the banknote
This is a song about a child of the government"
This verse is overall a great way of translating the song and how it fits the challenge really well. Jayli's father being taken from his bloodline by the government and lost to his heritage. Then you have the reason to why the government would do it by highlighting macro-economic factors, such as potential financial motivations behind the Sixties Scoop ("Smile for the priest now, God save the banknote")
The song is very powerful with beautiful dark vocals and subtle elements of indigenous drumming patterns and timely uses of chants accentuate a rich trap beat. The music video really describes Jayli's story very well and shows what the church and government put through not just her family history but other indigenous familes as well!
this is quite appropriate given the pope is currently in canada to apologize for the atrocities against indigenous people in residential schools that were abused at the hands of the church and the government. A full circle story. The scoop happened in the past, Jayli raising awareness about the situation at present day but also at this time having the pope and government apologise for the awful things they did to indigenous people and hopefully help the communities for the future

Nikita Greihamé SEASON 9 • EPISODE 2 Power To The People Send a song that covers political issues or makes a political statement.
So, week 2. We are asked to pick a song that cover political issues or makes a statement.
Politics is one of those topics which sadly I am not normally familiar with and understanding current affairs can be something that passes me by. However........
This song when i first heard it really struck home with how strong the lyrics and story meant and when reading into the story it compelled me to choose this as my my song.
My song is .....
Klemen Slakonja - Putin, Putout
OMG I HAVE BEEN HACKED BY THE RUSSIANS
I AM SO SORRY !!! I DONT KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING TO MY SONG!
This is better, sorry about that intervening situation, what we taking about .... yes political issues..... hmmm ..... was that russian hack a .... no it couldn't be..... Oh well moving ...
This song from Alunageorge address corruption with political issues especially within racism.
"There's a tiny percentage of people that benefit from us fighting each other. Racism itself is a capitalist invention. So whenever people engage in racism, somebody benefits financially."
Reading this from Aluna shocked me as it never crossed my mind that financial gain would come from racism and yet, every issue in society, someone is making a gain and profits from the backlash.
"Always someone pulling those strings Chuck you in and watch you swim Waiting for that big cha-ching See how much your life can bring"
Straight away, she hits home the truth that people of financial game use us as pawns and throw us in disrepair to see how much they can profit.
We would stop and ask 'Would you come and fight for this cause?'
When they say 'of course not', would you still choose that method of moving forward, or would you do something cleverer? Like bury the hatchet, make peace, or start negotiations?"

NOAH FENCE SEASON 9 • EPISODE 2 Power to the People Send a song that covers political issues or makes a political statement.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs Spitting Off the Edge of the World
My song for this week, Spitting Off the Edge of the World by Yeah Yeah Yeahs which also features Perfume Genius, is a sprawling stargazer that slowly unfolds and unfurls across a dramatic four minutes and directly addresses the weight of the environmental crisis, and the need for honesty about the damage we’re doing to the Earth. It feels very much needed in the right now, and Karen O’s lyrics reflect the damaged state of our environment, and what we can do the reverse course.
In a statement, O said, “Spitting Off the Edge of the World” was inspired in part by the looming climate catastrophe. “I see the younger generations staring down this threat, and they're standing on the edge of a precipice, confronting what's coming with anger and defiance,” While the song condemns and criticizes the people responsible for everything (the "Cowards" in the first line possibly being a reference to the politicians in charge and the bridge which refers to the previous generation and the state they left the world at), it also provides trust and gives a new hope and encouragement for the future generation to do better.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1] Cowards, here's the sun So bow your heads In the absence of bombs Draw your breath
[Pre-Chorus] Dark, dark places shall be none She's melting houses of gold And the kids cry out
[Chorus] We're spitting off the edge of the world Out in the night Never had no chance Nowhere to hide Spitting off the edge of the world Out comes the sun Never had no chance Nowhere to run
[Bridge] Mama, what have you done? I trace your steps In the darkness of one Am I what's left? Silver lines whisper to me Wounded arms must carry the load And the kids cry out
[Chorus] We're spitting off the edge of the worl Out in the night Never had no chance Nowhere to hide We're spitting off the edge of the world Nowhere to run Never had no chance Out comes the sun Spitting off the edge of the world Winds from the sky Never had no chance Will watch us rise

POWER TO THE PEOPLE ESTROGENNIFER
"Is It Enough" Hope Tala
This week, I decided to contribute a song by one of my favorite musicians, Hope Tala. She puts her strong emotional response to police brutality, abortion restrictions, and maltreatment of the LGBTQ+ community into a crisp, forceful protest music on her current single "Is It Enough."
Yeah it’s in our blood, all of this love But is it enough To know what we’re fighting for?
“I didn’t want it to feel forced or preachy, or just about one specific topic; this song was inspired by so many different things and events. Police brutality in my home city of London and in the US, laws that restrict the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community, thinking about my ancestors in chains—all of those things and more played a part in the making of ‘Is It Enough.’”
Lyrics:
I know I care about peace, know I care about black power Fewer police, more poetry and more flowers Shout when I speak, I couldn’t get any louder Cause I know that I’m free, no use being a coward I care about love and I think it’s the reason That we’ll rise above all the violence and cheating Yeah it’s in our blood, all of this love But is it enough
To know what we’re fighting for To know what we’re fighting for When we can’t break down the door Least we know what we’re fighting for
I think we should all be a little more tender Should love who we want to, regardless of gender And be who we are, shouldn’t have to pretend and Women should rise up and never surrender Hope that one day we’ll protect one another Put down our blades and start loving each other Is there a way we can stop running for cover?
Is it enough To know what we’re fighting for To know what we’re fighting for When we can’t break down the door Least we know what we’re fighting for
Cause every time that I turn on the news A different rhythm a similar tune Got me thinking, what is there to do? Cause I know courage isn’t bullet proof But every time I look up at the moon I know the power is ours to use We might stumble but we’ll never lose
I care about love and I know it’s the reason That we’ll rise above the violence and cheating It’s in our blood, all of this love But is it enough?
