A really interesting post by Jasna and glad to see this topic being discussed personally. I am fine with any of the 2 propositions to be honest. I do, understand that due to the age of most of the players here, 2000’s song are surely easier to find and more familiar to the users taking part, as well as more likeable. Been taking part in online song contests for many years now (and actually more than 10), it’s rather hilarious for me to see songs that were sent as ‘Brand new hits’ back then taking part here today. In any case, it would be nice if people actually did some more research and discovered less recent music from their countries, as that might as well be interesting. I would even be really interested in seeing how the contest would be if everyone was forced to send just songs from before 2000, but probably that wouldn’t bring many positive reactions and could even result to withdrawals.

A while ago I made some table to see from which decades my entries are from, and this is the result (including #76): 2000s: 20 entries 1990s: 18 1980s: 24 1970s: 10 pre-1970s: 4 So 56 entries have been pre-2000s and 20 from the 2000s, so I don't need to follow this challenge, if so then rather the other way around This is mostly (besides my personal preference) because 2000s wasn't really a great era for Austrian music imo, while in the 70s-90s it was much more popular, many songs are evergreens and many singers/bands are still famous and partly even active until today. Thus I know a lot of them and have more than enough material from back then. But of course I generally try to have a decent balance.

Decided to check myself, what exactly have I sent in these 76 editions. And here are the results: 2000s: 56 (33 of which are from 2000-2005) 1990s: 6 1980s: 11 1970s: 2 pre-1970s: 1 1st decade: 3 pre-2000's entries 2nd decade: 4 pre-2000's entries 3rd decade: 2 pre-2000's entries 4th decade: 2 pre-2000's entries 5th decade: 2 pre-2000's entries 6th decade: 4 pre-2000's entries 7th decade: 3 pre-2000's entries 8th decade: 0 pre-2000's entries (because of the reason I already explained) So 20 songs are pre-2000's. Out of 76 it's 26%, which I don't think is too bad (it would be a few percents better if not this latest decade). If you ask, why I haven't used more pre-2000's songs? I would've liked to, but it's mostly based on the fact that I want to stay at least somewhat competitive (knowing that latvian music in general isn't very competitive). If I take a quick look at my results, 2/3 last places I've got are for pre-2000's songs and none of my wins are from pre-2000's songs, plus out of 20 pre-2000's songs only 2 got top10 results (both from songs, that are covers/their versions of international songs). Think of it what you will. P.S. I know, that after this decade (maybe even starting with 80th edition, if the theme is right) I will continue sending at least 2-3 pre-2000's songs per decade, like I used to, so nothing much will change in that regard (unless a rule is introduced to somehow change that).

This discussion sparked my interest in researching Azerbaijani statistics and success rate of pre-2000 songs. Out of my 61 entries, 23 come from pre-2000s while 35 of them belong to the period after 2000s. 3 songs, all of them by Aygün Kazımova, premiered in precisely 2000, on the other hand. Perhaps I could have done better in terms of the abundance of the older entries, especially considering in the initial decades more than half (even more than 60% at some points) of my entries were pre-2000 songs. Apparently, starting from the fourth decade, I commenced to send more and more contemporary entries. To compare, in the previous decades, I have sent 5-7 songs from pre-2000 period, while after the fourth decade this amount decreased to 2-4. Interestingly, this is also a decade in which I managed to reach the top 3 (twice) for the first time, and both of the podium entries came from the period of post-2000. I guess that could be one explaining factor why I switched more and more to contemporary entries in the contest.
Now let's look at the Azerbaijani entries which achieved a top 10 placing. In general, I managed to advance to the top 10 18 times. Out of 18 top 10 entries, 8 were from pre-2000, 9 were from post-2000 and one song was from the year 2000. It seems like all (5) of my top 3 entries were thanks to the post-2000 songs. Moreover, pre-2000 songs only achieved to get a place in the second half of the top 10, with the notable exception of #56, an Azerbaijani entry from 1930s, which got a 4th place in the end. Notwithstanding, if we look at the success rate, we might see that, apparently my pre-2000 entries (8/23) did better than the post-2000 (9/35) entries. This is an important indication I haven't realized myself either before. Why? Because it demonstrates that even with a country with such a small music industry as Azerbaijan, you can still do better by sending entries from pre-2000 period.
All in all, I support Jasna's initiative on encouraging the players to send more older songs. This would result in increasing musical diversity in the contest and we might have more chances to see the classics shining in the Retro WWWSC.

Moroccan Retro entries: 60s: 1 entry (#14) 70s: 2 entries (#23 & 67) 80s: 9 entries (#1, 3, 4, 11, 20, 43, 44, 65 & 70) 90s: 12 entries (#7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 21, 22, 25, 26, 42, 64 & 68) 00s: 12 entries (#2, 5, 6, 13, 17, 18, 19, 24, 39, 40, 41 & 66)
For Morocco it was especially 90s and 00s music.

About the 2 options Jasna posted on the previous page I'm more in favour of the 1st one (coming from someone who more or less frequently is sitting out). And in case of the mentioned longer withdrawals there could be a restriction that if you don't take part in like 5 editions your next entry has to be a pre-2000s song - if that makes sense lol.
And btw. I find these tables in the posts above quite interesting so this is mine: I've so far taken part in 53 editions (including #76). And sent: 2000 - 2008: 23 songs 1990s: 14 songs 1980s: 11 songs 1970s: 3 songs Older: 2 songs (both from the 50s) Making that list was quite interesting because it looked a lot like the 1990s were getting a runaway win, but then since #45 I've sent only 8 pre-2000s songs compared to 14 newer ones.

That's interesting. But may I suggest to include the total participations? Places last 10 times. Still won 4 times. It's really shocking seeing a country like that having won that many times. I also. love that it's more last places than top 10s.
