PHILIPPINES REVEAL THEIR PUBLIC RANKINGS
The Philippines have revealed their rankings for the first semi final of NVSC 18. The rankings were taken from the same poll system used in the final of NVSC 17, but the number of voters has risen significantly, from 5,680 voters of NVSC 17 to 10,330 voters today. This number is just 1,500 voters shy of the number of voters in NVSC 17. The increase is suggested to have been because of Philippines joining NVSC as an associate broadcaster at the end of NVSC 17.
Topping the votes for Philippines is PQR qualifier Belarus, represented by Meseda and "Peresechenie". This should come as no surprise to fans, as Belarus is reported to be 1st place by a long way in the PQR and a long way ahead in the sneak peek. The country gained 1,330 votes (12.9%) and have apparently gained a large percentage of the points from the jury too.
A perhaps surprise second place is Lebanon, who are represented by Hiba Tawaji, singing "Comme un symbole". Having been ranked less than enthusiastically by the Philippines in the sneak peek, this comes as a surprise to people, but the French song in a contest that lacks both France and Monaco has impressed fans enough to gain 1,031 votes (10.0%), although the jury points are said to be not as generous.
The bronze medal from Philippines goes to Estonia, represented by Wurffel and the song "Burdened Sky". This is the third song about skies in the same number of contests to gain popularity from the public of the Philippines, with "We Broke The Sky" and "Personal Sky" ending up in the top five in the final previously. This Estonian entry gained 984 votes (9.5%), and the jury ranking is said to be similarly positive too.
4th place goes to Norway, whose entry "Dynasty" by MIIA is seen as one of the favourites to win the contest. While the entry hasn't lived up to the hype for Philippines, it's still relatively popular throughout the country and picked up 850 votes (8.2%). Rumours are suggesting that Norway have topped the jury ranking.
Finishing 5th for Philippines is Switzerland, who are represented by Jan Oliver's "Dancing Alone". The Central European country won the contest in NVSC 16, and the 5th place in these rankings have lead to shouts of being "underrated" by the Philippines public. Nonetheless, the song picked up 778 votes (7.5%).
Another solid qualifier is Sweden, who are represented by Violet Days. The song "Screaming Colors" has gained mass support by the public, so the position of 6th is somewhat surprising. However, reports suggest that a top three position in the jury is on the cards, and could be added to the 669 votes (6.5%) they have gained from the public.
A surprise qualifier for the Philippines is Macedonia, whose song "Lullaby" by Aleesia has ranked 38th in the betting odds and 17th in this semi final. While its qualification chances may be slim, the song certainly has its fans here, picking up 591 votes (5.7%) and a similar ranking is expected from the jury.
A returning artist is in 8th as the United Kingdom's entry "Thunder" has picked up positive reviews. The Leona Lewis song has received 442 votes (4.3%) despite initial negative reception to the song winning the United Kingdom's national selection, but the revelation that the song is basically an anthem made to slate Simon Cowell probably had a part to play in that.
The penultimate qualifier from the public is Algeria, represented by YADi and her song "Guillotine". This is another song that received initial negative reception, but has clearly grown on the public and has picked up 438 votes (4.2%). With another round to go, if Algeria qualifies, who knows what could come?
The final qualifier in 10th place is another shocker - Portugal have gained 415 votes (4.0%). The song has been universally slated for being "too boring", but the sweet nature of the duet "In Love" by David Carreira and Ana Free has won over the voters of Philippines. That said, there are rumours that the jury rankings are less than complementary.
Just missing out on the qualification places in Philippines is Kazakhstan, and there is a little shock that this has placed so highly with the Philippines, because there was a huge backlash to the song "Hey La" winning Awenfestivali. However, the Ayumi and Batyr dance track has apparently begun to win over the voters, with a 386 votes (3.7%) received.
12th place goes to the pleasant entry from Hungary, represented by Joni. While there have been no bad reviews for the Hungarian entry, it has failed to stand out amongst the voters on the poll and gained 312 votes (3.0%). Reports have suggested a kinder ranking from the juries which may give them a chance at a good overall ranking for the Philippines.
Sitting in 13th place is Serbia, with "SOS" by Ivana Selakov. Reviewers have said that the song is "good for what it is" but has failed to make a huge impact on the public, picking up 303 votes (2.9%). However, Serbia are on course for qualification according to the betting odds, as it is placed in 6th for this semi final.
The Madeline Juno song "Stupid Girl" hasn't had a fantastic reception from the Philippines, as Germany find themselves in 14th. Before the sneak peek, the large nation were expected to be in contention for a victory, but a disappointing 27th in the betting odds has shocked the public. Germany have only gained 292 votes (2.8%) from the public of Philippines.
Reported by reviewers as "the song that's everybody's 2nd favourite", Austria's "Rocket Man" is in 15th as the La Rochelle Band number has failed to impress the public enough to vote, and they've picked up 281 votes (2.7%) from the public, despite seeming a lot more popular in the Philippines.
16th place goes to Greece, with an ethnic, different feeling entry that has unfortunately failed to impress. "Gyrisa Selida" by Amaryllis has some very strong supporters, but there's a general animosity towards the entry, and gained 275 votes (2.7%) in the poll. The jury rankings separately are reportedly looking a lot better, however, so there is still hope.
In a slightly more shocking low, San Marino see themselves in 17th. "In un giorno di sole" by Bianca Atzei, while being more popular with the general public in the world, isn't very popular in the Philippines, and only received 256 votes (2.5%) in the poll, but rumours are suggesting that a more positive, optimistic ranking comes with the jury rankings, to be released after the NVSC 18 Grand Final.
Israel are in 18th place, with the general public not appreciating the fun nature of the Israeli entry "Habib Galbi" by A-WA. Still, 246 people (2.4%) did in fact appreciate the song, but it was unfortunately not enough to reach any higher than 18th. With a middle of the road placement in the betting odds, anything could happen for Israel though, and Philippines do not decide who gets through.
Poor Armenia can rarely catch a break in NVSC, so it was a breath of fresh air when they reached the final of NVSC 17. However, the people of the Philippines apparently don't want this to happen again, and have only given the Sofi Mkheyan song "Hamadzayn Em" 188 votes (1.8%). The voters of the Philippines appear to just be a little strange, because a top 10 placement in the betting odds sets them up nicely for qualification.
Just missing out on the last place, which I'm sure will be absolutely devastating, we have Iceland. The Icelandic entry "The Lunatics" has gained mass popularity throughout the NVSC community, but the people of the Philippines aren't so convinced by the Gladius and Klara Elias. Only 135 votes (1.3%) were gained by the Nordic nation that is one of the favourites to qualify, so this is definitely a shocker.
And we get to last place. Unicq's Luxembourg entry, filled with club beats, autotune and the trashiest trash possible, it's not a surprise people do enjoy it, but the people of the Philippines aren't liking it. Only 128 votes (1.2%) were picked up by Luxembourg, and the jury rankings aren't said to be much better, unfortunately for them.
