My Top 12 (February 19, 2018) Reviews, predictions, and number of plays ITALY (Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro - "Non Mi Avete Fatto Niente") - / (NEW!)
I fell in love the first time I heard it. I placed it second immediately, between Albania and France (that have stayed my top 2 since January). Of course, then Denmark came along and dragged Albania to fourth, etc. I've shown the song to my dad, and he said he likes it and that it's "different". He also stated that he's proud of them for singing in their own language. An immediate second, I listened to this at school twice more the second day, and the lyrics (that are great, by the way) just caught on, and I now know most of them by heart. After the third or fourth listen, I realized - This would be the first song to surpass "Mall". And so it did. VERY good choice, Italy. Spot on for three years in a row now. I give this top 10.
No. of listens (so far): 7 ALBANIA (Eugent Bushpepa - "Mall") - / (-1)Oh, wow. Albania, at last, lose their no. 1 spot. They've lasted for three whole weeks (!) and "Mall" was even my favorite song at one point. I like this a lot, and still think it could do very well. Douze points. I also know all the lyrics by heart, and as I'm going to meet a lot of Albanians soon, that's gonna be helpful. I think. I give this top 15.
No. of listens (so far): 17 DENMARK (Rasmussen - "Higher Ground") - / (NEW!)
Denmark! You're improving. You really are. From 36/40 to 33/42 to 16/42, you keep advancing in my top, and now you're 3rd out of 12. This was enchanting from the first 10 seconds of the song. This really could do well. Bring the victory back to Scandinavia so I could go there! Please! I give this top 3.
No. of listens (so far): 4
FRANCE (Madame Monsieur - "Mercy") - / (-2) - up from
Oh, yay, France. I don't like it less than the last time I made a top - I actually like it more. (But this year is very very strong!) Hearing this more makes me like it more. Simplistic but beautiful. Deserves top 10. I give this top 10.
No. of listens (so far): 6 SWITZERLAND (ZiBBZ - "Stones") - / (NEW!)
This is exactly the vibe I'm looking for. This song has been added to my personal playlist (where you can also find Albania's and Italy's entries), which resulted in me hearing it very often. It's a good song that will sadly get losted in the semis. I give this top 14 in the SF (no qualification).
No. of listens (so far): 10
CZECHIA (Mikolas Josef - "Lie To Me") - / (-3)
It's really such a good song that it's a shame to, sadly, have to have it down here at 6th out of 12. You're looking for a Eurovision bop? You got it. Definitely not a grower, but I'm not sick of it just yet. I give it bottom 5 in the final.
No. of listens (so far): 4
SPAIN (Alfred & Amaia - "Tu Canción") - / (-3) - up from
This was a disappointment at first listen, but honestly it's really not so bad. I just had to let the music make me happy. I'm personally still a mess 7 months after my girlfriend left me so I wasn't feeling very valentine-y. It's nice, but I still think it would do pretty bad. I give this bottom 5 in the final.
No. of listens (so far): 3.
GREECE (Yianna Terzi - "Oneiro Mou") - / (NEW!)
The Greek language has always been a bit of a turn off for me, but this one in all honesty is pretty nice. Although after the 1:10 or 1:20 mark, I was like "Wait, the chorus already happened?", I think it's a cool piece. I won't bothert to read the lyrics or check what they mean, because the vibe in general is a bit empty - I'm not feeling the song. I give this bottom 5 in the SF.
No. of listens (so far): 1
MALTA (Christabelle Borg - "Taboo") - / (NEW!)
This is a bit lame. A little cliché here and there, some meh vocals in the live performance - This all comes down to a piece I stopped listening to after one minute, because I was with my parents and didn't want to let that song "represent" what ESC is. After I got home, I listened to the rest of it. It's not that bad, but I'm really not into it. The lyrics are pretty bad but the melody is nice. I give this last place in the SF.
No. of listens (so far): 1
MONTENEGRO (Vanja Radivojević - "Inje") - / (NEW!)
Wow. I just finished listening to this and I'm not digging this at all. They probably went: "Let's take all the best Balkan songs from ESC: Lejla, Moj Svijet and Adio - And combine them into the ultimate Balkan song". That's what they failed to do. It's boring, and I'm not captivated by the vocals either. Not enough effort put into the lyrics, but I appreciate that he's done it all by himself. He's not Eugent though. I give this top 12 in the SF (no qualification).
No. of listens (so far): 1 BELARUS (Alekseev - "Forever") - / (NEW!)
No. This is a fantastic song and a spectacular singer. They have it all. NOT TOGETHER. This makes me absolutely furious. He sings so well, but NOT in English. This song works amazingly, with a DIFFERENT singer. The live vocals were completely horrendous, and this talented singer couldn't fit his vocals to this song. His accent ruins it all and Alekseev doesn't know how to handle the song. It's both the singer and the song you're looking for to win, but this just doesn't work. He can't sing it. What are you, Bulgaria 2009?! I give this top 20 in the final.
No. of listens (so far): 2
UNITED KINGDOM (SuRie - "Storm") - / (NEW!)
I was excited to hear that an Israeli songwriter wrote the British song for ESC. What I wasn't excited about was the realization that he wrote the absolute worst song in the contest. Outdated and pretty cheesy. "Through the storm, oh, oh, through the storm, oh, ohhh". What is this, 2006? I give this last place in the final.
No. of listens (so far): 1
It's good that I don't hate any song thus far. The worst song is the UK's entry, and they would get 30th-32nd in 2016 from me. A very good year so far.
