My idea is a bit similar to one of the special editions of WWWSC. 30 people get divided to 15 pairs. Each person should suggest 3 songs from the same artist for the country of his/her pair, which afterwards chooses the entry out of proposed songs. Example: Azerbaijan and France are a pair. 1. Azerbaijani participant wants Patricia Kaas to represent France. 2. Azerbaijani participant selects three songs sung by Patricia Kaas and sends them to French participant. 3. French player chooses one of these three songs which is going to represent the country in the special edition. 4. French player does the same and that way Azerbaijani song is chosen. From my point of view, this way, we can learn more about each other's countries' cultures and the edition would really be very special I find this very hard. This is like a next level version of the main contest one. It's hard to find old songs as it is if you're not from there, and then even 3 from the same artist? What happens when someone gets Samoa (especially if that person doesn't like researching)? Let me remind you, in that special edition I got Ethiopia, and it's a hard one to have, I can't imagine the added retro aspect to it ;; What I can see happening here is just the first artist that comes to mind (for big countries) will get selected, so many famous artists (esc artists). The whole point of this contest is to learn about the different music industries, and who better tho know them than the people who grew up there, live or lived there, speak their language and know their culture (most players anyway). That's why the rule of having your own country isn't just to have it but for that reason. Some people have problems finding songs for their own countries, let alone other ones (and everyone would hope to get a big one, which in the end are not that many). Maybe something like this could be considered if it's simplifed in some way. My first suggestion that comes to mind Keep the pairs. Let's use the same example countires. But in reverse. flaazerbaijan Azerbaijan picks 3 (Azerbaijani) songs and then France picks one to represent . And vice versa.
At this point I have no idea what to put in the poll.

I would suggest something like Duets (as an easier theme) or, if we want something more challenging, “National Anthem”, in which each country will not use the official anthem but a song that has marked an important moment/event for the country, a song that in some ways represents the whole country, that is so popular that could be considered a true “anthem” (I hope I have been able to explain this last theme )

At this point I have no idea what to put in the poll. Do not get me wrong, but I really can't agree with some of arguments you made. (of course, I respect them though) French participant made a similar comment in another thread, but otherwise the contest is getting to consist of modern songs, and one can't see diversification. It was really disappointing for me to have a special edition with a theme 'pre-90s' because most of the people tend not to send such songs (including me, because I've to adapt to the situation) and sending a song from a really retro era turns into reality only in special editions. Just out of interest, I searched for Samoan retro music in Wikipedia and YouTube, and I actually found a YouTube playlists that contain more than 50 Samoan retro songs. And I wouldn't even call this research, you just spend a few minutes and already have a list. Did the same for Azerbaijan (did the research in English) and still found a lot of playlists in a few minutes. It's really not that cumbersome to reach these songs, it seems difficult at the first glance so only. The thing I don't mainly get is that how come some people have problems finding songs for their own countries. I mean, being nationalistic would be the last thing I would like to turn, but I think all these retro songs are a part of our national cultures and it's a bit ashaming (from my perspective) for someone not to be aware of his/her country's culture. Because these songs turn to a part of your identity and even some affect your personality, come as a childhood memory in your mind, etc. Maybe this is how we are brought up in my country, but still this difficulty doesn't make sense to me. However, I am a person of democracy, I will accept the opinion of majority and your new suggestion sounds good as well. Do not get me wrong, my intention is not to protect my idea, I am open to any ideas, suggestions and there are some themes suggested that I already like. I hope there is not misunderstanding. Thank you for the consideration!

I didn't know if I should suggest this (as someone suggested it once and I said no), but since the scoreboard (scorewiz) has been updated and there are different possible point systems ... I was thinking we could have 3 negative points for once. So usual top 10 eurovision stlye AND -1, -2, -3. In other words, ranking a top 10 and a bottom 3. I do have a bitter-sweet relatioship towards negative points, but it might be interesting for a special edition. I actually considered something similar for the main contest for a edition in the future, as I saw that scorewiz has many new options, like even old ESC voting styles (from 1960s where you only voted for 3 countries and such) or Melodifestivalen voting, negative points as you said etc. So perhaps you could just let people pick from all these new voting options (like have a poll) and then have the most voted one as "special edition theme" I find the thought interesting to have a special edition not song-related but voting-related, it'd be something new

nijatI'm not talking for myself here. I spend waay too much time researching. But when you interact with so many people and have seen so many editions you notice that people don't care that much. Some want a lot for little effort. I'm not saying that's everyone, because it's obviously not. I got a feeling that happened in the current special edition of the main contest (not too much effort was put into the song search, as in one of the first songs that fit to the theme was selected, to just get over it, it's only one edition - or maybe it's just me). And to search for other countries, I don't know how many want to spent time listening to xyz amount of songs before they just settle for something. It's not their entry anyway. It can be put in a poll anyway and we can see what majority likes And about having problems looking for songs is surprising to me too. I've heard it from more than 2 people. While "tiny" Slovenian music industry currently got me to around 70 songs in my bookmarks. So yeah, one thing with people is, we are all so different. If you take my brother for example, he'd have no clue what to send and we grew up in the same household. But he's also not on the forums, so he actually doesn't have to look for any. (Would be hillarous if we had someone we know pick an entry for us but also no way to actually know it's been done ...) I don't know, maybe I'm underestimating people, but in the end I believe there's a balance. Some people search for hours, while others take the first song they found.

I personally don't want to get involved with negative votes and you will never see me participate to a contest with such a rule. We are supposed to vote FOR the songs we like, period. When you give to another country, the host doesn't know if you hate his song or if you just liked more the songs from other countries. When you give negative points, you send a very explicit message that you actually consider his song as one of the worst and that you consider it should be in the bottom of the ranking. It's like if I were saying to a girl: "I'm not in love with you... Oh wait, I haven't finished... Actually I think you are one of the ugliest/stupidest/meanest women I've ever met in my entire life."

My comment was actually general, sorry if this sounded like the target was you I was just surprised and to some extent dissatisfied with people not wanting to do just very little research. But I agree with your points! And you interacted with more people than I did here, probably you know the situation better. Thanks for the comment!

I got a feeling that happened in the current special edition of the main contest (not too much effort was put into the song search, as in one of the first songs that fit to the theme was selected, to just get over it, it's only one edition - or maybe it's just me). We can maybe say this for about a half of people participating, but some people (like me - though I know you didn't mean this about me) were quite restricted in the song choice: 1st - I had to choose a band (so about 2/3 of artists are off the list) 2nd - it had to be a band that had split up (which is hard enough for smaller nations, so you can't really expect anything big in this case) But I'm not complaining, because I still liked the theme I got, even though it didn't play any good to me (in terms of results).

Special edition #50 theme poll has been sent to all the praticipants of the last and current edition! Theme description 1. Send a superstar/legend (someone who did a lot for the nation's music industry) 2. Send a song in a dialect (any dialect from your country) 3. Suggestion pairs* (player picks 3 songs from their country, the other player picks the song which will represent the country they are paired with, and vice versa. If this is too easy, the pair can agree to make it the other way around. One player picks 3 songs for the other country and they pick the song to represent them) 4. Millenium songs (only songs released in 2000) 5. Negative point system (top 10 as always AND bottom 3 who get -3, -2 and -1) 6. Anthems (national, sports, other songs that might be considered as such)
*Example: Country A picks 3 songs from their country. Country B picks one of those 3 songs to represent the country A. The same is done for Country B. Alternative possibility is (if players in a pair want a bigger challenge), Country A picks 3 songs for Country B, Country B then picks one of those to represent them. The same is done for Country A. You have one week to vote, until the end of 21st March.
You must have gotten the link for the poll in you personal messages.
