------------------------------------------------------------ ▲▼▲▼▲▼△▽△▽△▽ 06 // Like------------------------------------------------------------Sadly couldn't attend the selection itself, but on a positive note, one of my few favourites won in the end. Good on 'ya, UK.
Sad Kerrie-Ann didn't make it, but there's not much to be sad about, considering "Bigger Than Us" by Michael is definitely the Plan B of the evening.
The song may be partially generic in its form, but on the other hand, it's not something you'd immediately hate on first listen.
I generally enjoy the instrumental it has, and I really love the choir as well, as it lifts the song more than if it was without it.
Michael is also very decent with his vocals, and the high note(s) in the last third of the song could definitely shine through in Tel Aviv.
Some problems I have with the song is how repetitive it is with it's lyrics. We get to hear "bigger" in sixth eights of the chorus, and alone could be a huge annoyance to an average viewer,
and that chorus is repeated three times in the song, so I really think a lot more creativity could have been put to ensure a much more stable lyric sheet for him to sing off of.
He should also keep a more stable stage presence. Him walking around on stage during the selection just felt wrong.
Otherwise, I actually like what the UK has chosen, despite it's weak selection and just ridiculous format of 6 acts/3 songs.
I also love how obvious it is that John Lundvik was behind this (not that I am complaining, absolutely loved "My Turn"). Could easily grow to a
in a few weeks for me.
I can also see some revamp potential for this song (stronger instrumentation, better lyrics, etc.). Whether the UK will do one, and/or if they will mess it up, only time can tell at this point.
Can it do good in the final? Potentially.
Not gonna lie, I also immediately thought UK would not stand a chance at Eurovision with any of these + UK is not that infamous with their many bottom places,
but the more I think about it, if the UK can handle the song correctly, I think they could do somewhat better than their usual standards?
I may sound crazy, but I do think UK could do a lil' bit better, as they already have a strong third chorus + (from what I can see) a lot of revamp potential with the song.
But to contradict myself, I did also mention how this might stay as a "ok" song to many, and not a lot of people will be behind it in the finals,
and I am still not sure whether a revamp can save, or absolutely destroy the song, so, as of now, the UK might still be in danger of another bottom 5.
Overall? The selection has been a dumb idea since the new format was introduced, but in the end, the song didn't come out as much of a tragedy as the selection format was.
Michael is a decent singer, and he can definitely deliver the song as his own. If the BBC can provide the improvements needed, UK might be into something here.
I wish the very best of luck to Michael Rice and the United Kingdom through their Eurovision 2019 journey!
