Yeah I've pulled back from it sounding like Fuego in full. Honestly I find this really uninteresting? Even her studio vocal doesn't grasp me and I'm just envisioning this falling apart live, especially in the supposed stronger semi-final. Granted she'll probably have a great team behind her but for me, this doesn't slap, but it's not bad either. Edit: it's growing on me Shut up old ste this is a bop It's now in my top 10 oops

Because Cyprus got so close to winning in 2018 but it was their best placing ever, a lot of hype started to swirl around the Cypriot entry for 2019. I regretfully ranked Eleni Foureira’s “Fuego” 23rd of 43 last year, in what was an assumed attempt at basic dance-pop. She turned up the heat around rehearsal time, and even won the Semifinal she was in with Netta. Admittedly, her Beyonce-like dancing and general energy made the song an amazing hit, and most of Europe thought we were heading to Nicosia. So can the Georgian-Greek native Tamta live up to that level of expectation? The song is called “Replay,” which is produced by the same group of fellas who worked for Eleni’s purpose - and it shows. The vibe of the song, almost from the very first note, is basically the same. Tamta is drenched in a pink vail, she’s got dancers, and she’s got a very sultry tone. The song is a sexy one, for sure! The lyrics literally say “You can’t get me out of my head, you need my love on replay!" I like the song but I’m not in love with it. The vivaciousness of the tune keeps me listening for the entire thing - and there are enough “moments” constructed in the bombastic instrumentation and chorus breaks that will allow for interesting stage tactics. We can probably expect more pyro! And although no live version of “Replay” exists online yet, there are plenty of live videos of her singing that show she can clearly captivate an audience with riffs and improvisation. But it's hard to do these things with an upbeat tempo song, and I couldn’t find any up-tempo live performances. Too many questions remain up in the air for me. This song is going to be difficult to judge on its own merit because within the Eurovision bubble the comparisons to Fuego are unavoidable and dampen its general mood. If a judge is familiar with Eurovision music they may be naturally inclined to vote in a direction opposite of what worked musically in the past, which would hurt “Replay” greatly. I’m going to be smart this year and leave it up to the stage performance. And while it should be good, I have a hard time thinking it’ll be as amazing - Tamta herself has said in interviews that she’s not much of a dancer, so that leaves five others to do the dancing for you, or you have to come up with something else creative to do on stage. I don’t think this is a winner at this time, but I think Cyprus is safely competing on Saturday evening for the fifth-straight year.
