I'm grateful to announce that the winner of TCoH #22, and therefore the Dutch representative in WWWSC #69 is:
Maktub - Eyes of innocence (3:08 - 3:28)
The story of this song really touched me. The lead singer, Roos Meijer, wrote the song after a visit to a refugee camp in Greece. The sad, virtually hopeless situation of the people in this camp prompted her to start this musical project, the profits of which will go to the NGO Sounds of Change. This is an organization that trains volunteers to give music lessons to children in refugee camps.
Being socially involved with refugees, I can see glimpses of the emotions expressed in this song. In the eyes of my refugee friends, I can sometimes see the fear of rejection taking over. The fear of not being accepted by their new country. The fear to be sent back to a situation in which their basic human rights cannot be guaranteed. But on the other hand, I've had the privilege to share many moments of hope and joy with them. Some of these were connected to music. When the music starts playing, and people get on their feet to sing and dance, you can feel the mood changing. Somehow, music has a power to connect people without needing to use words. Somehow, music makes us forget the trouble we're in for a while.
This works for my friends, it has worked for me on many occasions as well. Therefore, I'm really enthusiastic about the work of Sounds of Change. I hope this NGO will be able to bring a glimmer of hope in the hard life of refugee children, and forge bonds between the refugee and non-refugee populations of the places where they work. I really hope this small progress can be made. I really hope that projects like these can make a small contribution to make us realize that all of us are human, and need to be treated as such. All of us have a story, all of us need love and empathy. When you forge a personal bond with someone, for instance through music, can you still be blind to their problems? It might be a drop in the bucket, but as my mother used to say: "many drops will make the bucket overflow".
Please, take a look at the full lyrics of the song:
Dreams have been shattered by torrential rain
Rain of bullets and bombs
The last surviving dream will rise up
And families will follow him
All the way to a strange land
Where he will settle down
But fear has taken over there
So empathy is hard to find
But when you look into these eyes of innocence
Can you still turn your back?
Rain of bullets and bombs
The last surviving dream will rise up
And families will follow him
All the way to a strange land
Where he will settle down
But fear has taken over there
So empathy is hard to find
But when you look into these eyes of innocence
Can you still turn your back?
