GUYANA SAYS ‘WOMEN’S RIGHTS!’ ~ Georgetown - 31 May 2020 ~
Due to several reasons including the unexpected pandemic, the head of delegation Kinoshita Ramayana revealed that the team struggled a lot to find a suitable representative to present the nation in the United States. Despite this, Guyana is finally able to announce their artist with strong Guyanese blood who is ready to return to the contest and she is ... SABIYHA
Sabiyha Rasheed is an Indo-Guyanese descent who currently base in South London’s Croydon. As a developing artist she’s already been marked by many as someone with a bright future. On her debut single, ‘Bird’, she shows exactly why. Strong songwriting and an astonishing voice already set her up as more than just another new act. The 19-year-old singer songwriter is not ashamed to admit she spent most of her teenage years gathering the building blocks for her own sound, drawing on influences as diverse as urban soul, reggae, folk and blues, oblivious to the popular music around her.
Oh why I can’t speak for myself? “Hear me sister, never let them hold your tongue” The track's name, “Choorile”, is a feminist reclamation of a Guyanese term for a female perceived to be unruly, and was inspired by her mother. She states that growing up her mother would ask her: “'Are you a leader or are you a follower?' She was quite hard about that - she didn’t want me to just go along with what people were saying, and that’s what has shaped the way I am. You don’t want to get in an argument with my mum! She’s tiny but there’s plenty of fight in her. She’s the person that I was thinking of, writing ‘Choorile’”.
After surprisingly gave the nation’s first victory three editions ago, It’s such a pleasure for Guyanese delegations to welcome her back to OAmSC stage and fly the Golden Arrows flag in the United States. In the upcoming event, she will spread the empowering message via her official debut song “Choorile”!“Choorile” ~ Guyana in Own AmericaVision Song Contest 9 ~ Song by Sabiyha Music & Lyrics by Sabiyha
