Why can't you hold me in the street? Why can't I kiss you on the dance floor?

The Azerbaijani entry has finally been officially released. As far as I see, many Eurovision fans feel satisfied about Efendi's entry, while the remaining has disliked "Mata Hari" either because it is "cheap song" or a "copy-paste of Cleopatra". The similarities with the last year's entry are, in my opinion, more pronounced in the last part of the song, which I also find messy and to some extent, unnecessary. The first two verses and choruses have not been considered that similar by many Azerbaijanis since the sound of regional instrument zurna turns it into a different genre in our ears. I am, moreover, surprised at the simplicity of the official clip since Azerbaijan is known for paying significant attention to the production of music videos.
With regards to the local reception, Azerbaijani Eurovision fans seem to prefer "Mata Hari" over "Cleopatra" so far. That's mostly because of the fact that the current entry is considered "the most ethnic" song we have ever sent to the contest, associated with the usage of two national instruments - zurna and nagara. On the other hand, pre-chorus part of "Mata Hari" includes phrases in Azerbaijani language, the first time ever in our Eurovision history.
If you ask my personal opinion, I believe Efendi has chances to advance to the top 10 with the right staging and good live performance. Something tells me we'll most likely end up in the second half of top 10, but it is too early to make precise predictions I guess. Anyway, it has been my pleasure to keep you updated about Azerbaijani representation in Eurovision 2021; hope these posts were helpful.

Oh thanks god it's finally out! Mata Hari itself is a good song although it's a 100 % copy of Cleopatra (which I always expected it to be just saying). It's a good song that would by itself easily get a from me. What bothers me a bit however is her voice which is also why for now I'm rating Samira with a .

This is not for me. It can't be said I'm disappointed by this entry, in fact, I had no expectatios at all. Shabby Swedish pop music combined with an artist who tries to present herself as a typical "Eurovision queen" (and it's sad to say that we have several of these desperate attempts this year, e.g. Cyprus, San Marino, Latvia, Malta) canresult only into disaster. Also the ethnic elements are artificially incorporated, it sounds very unnaturally, I don't even think it's radio friendly. One of my least favourite songs this year.
