Has anyone seen the first Soviet musical, released in 1934?
"Jolly Fellows" (Russian: Веселые Ребята), also translated as "Happy-Go-Lucky Guys", is a 1934 Soviet musical film,
directed by Grigory Aleksandrov and starring his wife Lyubov Orlova, a gifted singer and the first recognized star of Soviet cinema. It is features several songs which instantly became classics across the Soviet Union.
Music was by Isaak Dunayevsky, the lyrics were written by the Soviet poet Vasily Lebedev-Kumach. Both Orlova and her co-star, the jazz singer and comic actor Leonid Utesov, were propelled to stardom after this movie!
Leonid Utesov (born in Odessa in 1895) was a famous Soviet jazz singer and comic actor of Jewish origin,
who became the first pop singer to be awarded the prestigious title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1965.
In the musical comedy "Jolly Fellows", he plays the role of a cheerful shepherd-musician Kostya Potekhin,
who was mistaken for a fashionable foreign Tourer. In the Odessa music-hall, the simple-minded Kostya
created a sensation and became the conductor of a jazz orchestra. His orchestra is preparing to perform
on the stage of the Bolshoi theater, and instead of rehearsals, it plays at funerals…
