Cypriot entry! The song that will represent Cyprus in the 99th Edition of Retro WWWSC is called "Eleni tis nyxtas", by Polina Christodoulou. The song was the soundtrack of a TV series, called "Eleni the prostitute" and which was based on a true story. Eleni was a beautiful girl who was raped by her alcoholic father back when she was around 15 years old and was then abandoned by her mother. Trying to find her way back, she ended up in a bar where a perverted man took her to a brothel. Due to the situation back then and fearing about her life, she couldn't escape, even years later, in a small society where everyone would point at her with their fingers. Years later, her story was written in a book which then became a TV series as well. Eleni is still alive and some people say she's selling flowers to make a living, whilst others claim she's gone abroad to find her siblings and reunite with them.

Idk whether you noticed, but all my entries this decade have been from 2009 / 2010. That was actually on purpose because in the previous one I did only pre-2000 songs and so I decided which one to check which one I'll fare better with. However this edition I decided to "break" that.
May I present to you:
Vico Torriani - Kalkutta liegt am Ganges
The decision why I'm suddenly coming with a 1960 song is because I learned (2 days ago) that 21st September would've been the 100th birthday of this artist. Vico was born in Geneva and raised in St. Moritz (yes there are also regular people living there) and is considered one of Switzerland's most successful artists of any kind of all time. Fun (or not so much fun) fact: Kalkutta liegt am Ganges did peak at #1 in Germany back in 1960. The next Swiss artist who achieved that was Luca Hänni in 2012. In other words it took the Swiss music industry not less than 52 years (!) to get a German #1.
