As the host nation,
Ireland will obviously be participating. Welcome to
Waterford!
This edition, we will be sending a song in another Celtic language, specifically
Breton which is spoken in the region of
Brittany (Breizh) in
France.
The singer we've chosen is
Siobhán Owen. She is a
Welsh singer who was born in
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, who has also been living in
Adelaide, Australia since the age of 2. However, she does have
Irish heritage, specifically from her
Irish mother from Galway. Her most recent album, Entwined, has songs in
Welsh,
Irish,
Scottish Gaelic and
Breton. She has also sung in other languages, such as
French,
German,
Italian,
Estonian, Latin,
Spanish,
Russian,
Malagasy,
Japanese, and Elvish (according to her linkedin).
The song she will sing is
An Hini a Garan which, like mentioned above is in the
Breton language. An Hini a Garan (eng. "The one I love") is known as a
gwerz and was composed by Jean-Baptiste Oliero, and to this day has many interpretations with many differences. However the version of the song that is sang the most would probably be close to that of
Denez Pigent, who sang the song with
Australian singer Lisa Gerrard.
t/s: to be updated, it's a difficult song to take a timeslot from.
Good luck! Pob lwc, go n-éirí le Siobhán, Chañs vat!
