Meet ...
ANOHNI (and the Johnsons)
Anohni (she/her) is a 52 year old Chichester-born and New York based singer, songwriter and visual artist who will represent the state in the upcoming contest alongside her band The Johnsons, who were named after the late LGBTQ+ rights activist Marsha P Johnson (she/her), most known for being a part of the most known LGBTQ+ rights protests, Stonewall, in 1969. Growing up, Anohni was influenced by new wave singers in the 1980s, such as Boy George and Alison Moyet and learnt how to sing as a result. She has been active musically since 1995, where she started off producing music for productions and art installations alongside her band. In 1997, her first performance was in the Manhattan venue, The Kitchen, as a part of William Basinski's installation "Life on Mars". She was known for performing in New York's venues such as Joe's Pub and The Knitting Factory. She has released six albums, five with her band The Johnsons, which are 'Antony and the Johnsons' (2000), 'I Am a Bird Now' (2005), 'The Crying Light' (2009), 'Swanlights' (2010), 'My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross' (2023) and one solo album, 'Hopelessness' (2016). In 2015, she publicly came out as transgender woman and changed her name to Anohni in 2016. Anohni has also collaborated with notable singers such as Lou Reed, Björk, Little Annie, Yoko Ono, Franco Battiato and Big Freedia.
The song she'll performing alongside her band in the upcoming contest held in Georgia will be ... "IT MUST CHANGE" New York's entry for the Own USAvision Song Contest #10
TS: 2:01 - 2:26 (I highly recommend listening to the song in full and if you have any better suggestions of recap slots, please do not hesitate to let me know.)

Lyrics:
It must change It must change It must change It must change The way you talk to me, it must change The things you do to me The way you leave me The seeds you give to me It must change, it must change The death inside you That you pass into me The truth is that I always Thought you were beautiful In your own way You know how they always said That light was the opposite of darkness? It's just fire and darkness That's why this is so sad That's why this is so sad (I'm creating life) That's why this is so sad That's why this is so sad So those opposites, they don't exist (so sad) It's just an idea that someone told you (so sad) And that's why this is so sad It must change Must change It must change It must change The city in your head Collapsing walls and lead, it must change The fire is cleaning The oil from the stones Your God is failing you, things must change Giving you hell The truth is that our love Will ricochet through eternity We're not getting out of here That's why this is so sad No one's getting out of here That's why this is so sad This is our world That's why this is so sad That's why this is so sad It's so sad, so sad It's just gonna be a lonely place for us So sad (this is the place) So sad, so sad
The song is taken from her recent album, My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross (2023), which the album cover features a photograph of the late LGBTQ+ rights activist, Marsha P Johnson. The song is musically inspired by Marvin Gaye's 1971 record 'What’s Going On'. The song is about the need for acceptance and hope for the future, where I assume the song was made as a result of the rising transphobic hostility against trans and queer people globally. In 2014 interview with Flavorwire, Anohni, reinforces the importance of respect when referring to someone's gender identity, where she states "I think words are important. To call a person by their chosen gender is to honor their spirit, their life and contribution." The Head of Delegation, Lux (they/she) wishes Anohni and the Johnsons the best of luck in the contest held in Georgia. They would also like to make an importance announcement in regard to the importance of inclusion of trans and queer folks currently. (CW / Mention of Transphobia) "Firstly, I would like to credit my friend Sofia for inspiring me to make this announcement. My main intention for this entry is that I would like to use this contest as a platform for social justice, to combat issues affecting current society, as trans people need more representation and visibility. So I would like to remind you, if you are not already, it is your time to be an ally to trans people, regardless of your identity. Hence, if you are already showing your allyship, then kudos to you. Currently, transgender people are being dehumanised and portrayed brutally in the media and various governments across the world as well as having misinformation being shared about them. This is leading them to invalidated, stereotyped and killed. To make matters worse, even some people from the LGBTQ+ community are turning against us. If you have the privilege, it is very important you are as vocal as much as possible when supporting transgender and queer people, to prevent trans people from being erased. Therefore, I would highly recommend you remind the people who follow you that you care about trans and queer people. For example, you could share petition links, trans people's fundraisers (for example, for their transition) or trans people's successes you are proud of. Thank you for reading this announcement, I have also provided some helpful resources taken from the #resources channel on the SCF Discord, on supporting trans people below."If you are affected by any issues raised in this post, please do not hesitate to seek help, such as contacting a trustworthy helpline and/or the SCF staff. Also if you witness any transphobia in SCF please also do not hesitate to report this to the forum staff either via the forum's report function or via the Discord bot hyejoo's "h.report" feature.
