The United Kingdom confirms! Published: Isle of Skye, 28 January 2024
▴ Precious Pepala performed her entry "Bubble Wrap" in Luxembourg
Today (28 January 2024), the British Broadcasting Cooperation (BBC), leading by Kinoshita Kirkland, confirmed the participation of the isles in the upcoming event, to be held in Serbia. The United Kingdom will automatically qualify to the grand final there thanks to the third place achieved by Precious Pepala with her song "Bubble Wrap".
Kirkland also affirmed that the next British entry will be determined through the lately organized national selection Own Eurovision: Unite Up for Music. The second event should be logically held in England following the win by England's Precious Pepala, however, plans including host city and the selection format are slightly altered this time. The show will take place in the beautiful Isle of Skye of Scotland, known as An t-Eilean Sgitheanach in the local language - with only one artist to compete with multiple songs. It is a great pleasure to announce that the United Kingdom will be represented by ...
Niteworks (Obair Oidhche)
Niteworks, also known by the Scottish Gaelic name as Obair Oidhche, is an Electronic Celtic fusion band from the Isle of Skye, Scotland consisted of four members including Innes Strachan (Aonghas Strachan), Allan MacDonald (Ailean Domhnallach), Christopher Nicolson (Crisdean MacNeacail) and Ruairidh Graham (Ruairidh Greumach). The band is known for writing new songs in Scottish Gaelic and melding the bagpipes and Gaelic song forms such as puirt a beul with techno and house beats. Niteworks came together back then in early 2008. Shortly after forming, the band won several awards including the Rapal song contest with "Nam aonar san fonn".
They are not a stranger face for the Own Eurovision fandom as they have already competed in the British national selection once, alongside Scottish songstress Julie Fowlis, where they ,unfortunately placed 9th out of 10 competitors. However, that would not be the end of their journey in Own Eurovision as BBC internally invited them to represent the United Kingdom in the upcoming European music competition. The band is set to disband this year and to exhibit their homeland culture and music on the continental stage would be a great way to end their 17-year musical adventure.
As their works may already suggest, all potential entries to become the 19th British entry in the competition will be in Scottish Gaelic. Thus, the language will make its grand debut in the contest for the first time ever and also the first time for the United Kingdom to not send an entry in English.
Stay tuned for more information and unite hearts through the universal language of music!
