Homosexual relationships were possible in Sims 2 or 3 too (probably Sims 1 too). What's new now? You could make a man love another man, or a woman love another woman in previous games (and they could adopt children)  From what I've read, you can now "choose" the sexuality of a sim when creating one and they can also marry and live together.
