No exams in the end of the year. Gymnasium takes until the 12th grade, Realschule until the 10th and Hauptschule until the 9th.
I have 14 different subjects for example.

1st - 4th you go to the elementary school (Grundschule) After that you will be sent to a recommended school (by your teachers mostly) The "Hauptschule" is the school for the 'worst' pupils. There are 5 years on that school. Then there's a "Gesamtschule" (I'm on one) which is the second 'easiest' school. You can go there either for 5 or 6 years. The "Realschule" is one of the harder schools. Dunno much about that. The "Gymnasium" is the hardest school. Many long school days, much homework and you're learning faster there than in the other schools. All in all you learn the same on every school but the way and the speed are different. ______________________________________ After you finished one of those schools you can choose to do the Abitur (a special qualification). It takes 3 more years. (In Northrhine Westphalia you can do an Abitur within 2 years) The bad thing about what I explained is that the school systems are different in every single German state. What I explained goes for Northrhine Westphalia. But as I heard you're going to move to Baden-Württemberg so yeah, I think it's different there

^ Isn't "Gesamtschule" rather for everyone (excellent, good, so-so, bad students - as it already says in the title "Gesamtschule")??

^ I dont know, there are hardly Gesamtschulen here in Bavaria. The "Gymnasium" is the hardest school. Many long school days, much homework and you're learning faster there than in the other schools. Actually this with the homework isnt true, we have less homwork than on Realschulen.

^ No, they actually just recommend, in the end you choose (except teachers say you're bad and you want to go to the highest school )
