• TEA-REX •Week 11: Snowball
- Song about Winter - Mogli - "Alaska" (2:08 on)
The song dedicated to the northernmost and therefore coldest state in the USA depicts its frozen yet beautiful landscape. Apart from the lyrics relating to winter elements like "melting snow", "frozen river skeletons" or cold animals like the orcas and the wolves, I feel the song has a nice winter vibes in it!
Lyrics:
All the seasons in one day The heat takes my breath away Melting snow in crystal veins With wind comes the rain
Lost in the sweep of the horizon Water so deep mountains are rising No one but you by my side through lows and highs Lost in the sweep of the horizon
Frozen river skeletons Tears streaks to orcas chords Blinded by the midnight sun I run
Lost in the sweep of the horizon Water so deep mountains are rising No one but you by my side through lows and highs Lost in the sweep of the horizon
I'm on top of the world And then the wolves howl And then the wolves howl And then the wolves howl The wolves I'm on top of the world They howl
- Song about Global Warming- ANOHNI - "4 Degrees" (2:47 on)
ANOHNI's song is clearly about the global warming effects and its powerful lyrics make you realize about how bad the problem really is. Have a listen and check the lyrics below!
Lyrics:
It's only four degrees, it's only four degrees It's only four degrees, it's only four degrees It's only four degrees, it's only four degrees It's only four degrees, it's only four degrees
I wanna see this world, I wanna see it boil I wanna see this world, I wanna see it boil
It's only four degrees, it's only four degrees It's only four degrees, it's only four degrees
I wanna hear the dogs crying for water I wanna see fish go belly-up in the sea All those lemurs and all those tiny creatures I wanna see them burn, it's only four degrees
And all those rhinos and all those big mammals I wanna see them lying, crying in the fields
I wanna see them burn, it's only four degrees I wanna see them burn, it's only four degrees I wanna see them burn, it's only four degrees
I wanna burn them, I wanna burn them I wanna burn them, I wanna burn them
I wanna burn the sky, I wanna burn the breeze I wanna see the animals die in the trees
Oh let's go, let's go it's only four degrees Oh let's go, let's go it's only four degrees Oh let's go, let's go it's only four degrees Oh let's go, let's go it's only four degrees
I wanna burn them, I wanna burn them I wanna burn them,
- Song from Iceland - GANGLY - "Drowning" (2:47 on)
The country I got assigned is Iceland and this is a song I simply adore from there! It's a darkish pop song which clearly won't leave you indifferent!
Lyrics:
Slow down, breath, ya going too fast Take a deep breath if you wanna make it last It pulls me down, the feeling drowns Holding on to what dream too far And a room's get lost in the dark of it all I'm lost here in the night, been to sleep for all this time Only when my eyes can see no more (under slowdown) Things will never be what they were before (under slowdown, boy)
Drowning a little bit everyday Hard to make the feeling last, so sad The sun comes up and there's been no sleep I fall so deep And I can see your hands as they reach down the well
I am moon-white (brother, brother) Sweep the floors when they fire up Faster, sleep, dreaming, I never weak up I can see my reflection My feet on the ground make the only sound
Drowning a little bit everyday Hard to make the feeling last, so sad The sun comes up and there's been no sleep I fall so deep And I can see your hands as they reach down the well
This fight, only to fuck with myself Only to cry blood tears Only to cover the wounds To heal in the darkness (to heal in the darkness) Heal in the darkness
Drowning a little bit everyday Hard to make the feeling last, so sad The sun comes up and there's been no sleep I fall so deep
Drowning a little bit everyday Hard to make the feeling last, so sad The sun comes up and there's been no sleep I fall so deep And I can see your hands as they reach down the well

Krampu$$y
Winter Song Eisblume • "Eisblumen" (Engl.: "Ice Flowers")
3:08+
This pop-rock song was a hit in Germany in the late 00s and it took a while for me to remember this gem but once I did, I immediately decided to send it. While the song isn't about winter itself, it uses winter symbolism and metaphors throughout the whole song and it generally has a cold vibe that I enjoy. The video style adds to the wintery atmosphere.
Read the english translation of the lyrics in the spoiler:
The day flees hurriedly out of the city She drinks from the shadows until satiated And shows her true face The puddles already shimmer like ice In the sky shines a silver lining The evening transforms dew to frost The paleness that snows off from our cheeks Makes us beautiful like angels They should get down on their knees And pray that the Moon remains shrouded We are like ice flowers We bloom at night We are like ice flowers Too beautiful for the day We are like ice flowers Cold and black is our power Ice flowers bloom at night The morning converts frost to dew The day makes everything loud and rough We dress ourselves in sadness But the day is gone, and so comes our time Who wants to shine, flees the light He looks the Night in the face The paleness that snows off from our cheeks Makes us beautiful like angels They should get down on their knees And pray that the Moon remains shrouded We are like ice flowers We bloom at night We are like ice flowers Too beautiful for the day We are like ice flowers Cold and black is our power Ice flowers bloom at night Ice flowers We are like ice flowers Too beautiful We are like ice flowers We are like ice flowers We bloom at night We are like ice flowers Too beautiful We are like ice flowers Cold and black is our power Ice flowers bloom at night Climate Change Song Wendy Oldfield • "Acid Rain"
3:22+
Note: the song ends at 3:52, the rest of the video seems to be a different song This 1999 song is from South African singer Wendy Oldfield. It has two versions, with this being the better one in my opinion. The song is about pollution of the environment which in consequence leads to the question whether there is a future of hope and whether we will see what our actions do. Since this song was released 20 years ago, it was quite ahead of its time. While the environmental movement really kicked off in the 80s, it hasn't happened until this decade that more and more people seem to really understand the impact of climate change. Arctic Circle Song: Norway Elle Márjá Eira • "Guodohit (Guođohit-To herd)"
3:51+
Note: the song starts at 1:22 I found this song a few months ago while searching Norwegian songs for OESC and immediately fell in love with it. It's a Sámi song from northern Norway, which is exactly the part of Norway that lays within the arctic circle. I thought it'd be interesting to send an artist from Sápmi, in Sámi language, instead of maybe going for something more generic and English. The song being really unique and beautiful (and winter themed) added to my decision of sending it and I hope the judges appreciate it!

Winter Bat For Lashes - "Winter Fields"
Recap part: (1:47+)
“Winter Fields” is the 6th song of Bat for Lashes' third album, The Haunted Man.
In an interview with Q Magazine, Natasha revealed that the song “is the most nostalgic track on the record, harkening back to my memories of childhood, being in the back of a car driving through country lanes as it’s snowing, looking out over the fields. Those real childhood depictions of the English landscape. It’s a little bit haunted, lost in the flurries of snow.”
Lyrics:
Hurtling through heavy snow Our hands are cold and the moon sets low Little sister, let your sharp teeth show Past winter fields
Stop the car by the old wire post Scaredy rabbits make good paper ghosts That lick the salt off the Sussex coast And fall into winter fields
Rows of white Spelled our escape in the old torch light Oh mother, I'm scared to close my eyes Some winter dreams make you dive and dive and dive down
In sub-zero I can't stand still Colours of absence flooding the hill In wonderment, I trip and spill Through winter fields
Under the stairs taps the metronome The diver's suit that we've all outgrown I need to get to where the wild things roam Through all of my winter dreams
Global Warming Tanya Tagaq - "Cold"
Recap part: (4:00+)
Tanya Tagaq's fourth album Retribution was released in October 2016. Retribution is Tanya's portrait of a violent world in crisis, hovering on the brink of destruction. It’s an album about celebrating the great strength of women, it’s about rejecting the toxic, militaristic masculinity that’s taken over the world since the rise of Western industrial capitalism, and is rapidly destroying human life support systems through climate change and pollution.
“Cold” is the most harrowing science-class lecture you’ll ever hear: Tagaq recites the effects of global warming on the Arctic, before ominously declaring, “Human civilization as we know it will no longer exist… because Gaia likes it cold.” Lyrics:
If you take a gram of water And apply one calorie of heat to it You will raise its temperature by one degree Celsius But you need to apply 81 calories To ice, simply to change it to water at 0 degrees Celsius The latent heat of change of state of ice to water Uses 81 times more available heat Than rising the temperature of water one degree Once all the ice is melted The once covered ice area will heat up 81 times faster There will be no stopping it A new steady state of high heat tolerant might mean Hopefully, rapidly evolve But human civilisation as we know it will no longer exist 'Cause Gaia likes it cold 'Cause Gaia likes it cold 'Cause Gaia likes it cold
The loss of ice cover will catipult our climate Into an uncharted, apocalyptic era of rapid heating There will be no stopping it

CŒUR DE MEME
WINTER SONG
Sleeping At Last - Arctic
Recap Timeslot 03:16+
Shedding a tear at this, a classic that I chose because of nostalgia reasons attached to it, as I still remember how I walked through the snow and around the tranquillity of December's night, listening to Ryan's impactful songs, most notably the "Atlas: Year One" collection, which this song is part of. While I have more vivid memories to his other songs, this still stands as one of his better songs and overall fits the winter category perfectly - hence, Arctic, with its cello/violin attributes and frosty vibes.
GLOBAL WARMING SONG
Marillion - Seasons End
Recap Timeslot 03:00+Originally released in 1989 and thus somewhat ahead of its time and mashed between the 69's and our modern apocalypse concerning climate change, Marillion have covered the affects of human activity on our planet before it arose to such high prominence. Rocky yet simple, with the music video presented in black and white, with footage of waste on the ground, children in the snow and our mother earth rotating in space.
That it might never snow again In England
Snow is rare in England and the British Isles overall, but when it comes, it leaves an impact. The line above implies that due to the heating of the planet, it might never snow here again. There are a lot of hints of global warming and overall climate change in this song:
We left our footprints in the earth And punched a hole right through the sky
These two lines indicate to a person's carbon footprint, or the amount that they contribute to greenhouse gases and global warming. The latter sentence indicates to the hole in the ozone layer, another manmade problem that arose recently.
So watch the old world melt away A loss regrets could never mend
Full lyrics in the spoiler
Getting close to seasons end I heard somebody say That it might never snow again In England
Snow flakes in a newborn fist Sledging on a hill Are these things we'll never see In England
We'll tell our children's children why We grew so tall and reached so high We left our footprints in the earth And punched a hole right through the sky
We'll tell them how we changed the world And how we tamed the sea And seasons they'll never know In England
So watch the old world melt away A loss regrets could never mend You never miss it till it's gone So say goodbye Say goodbye
We'll tell our children's children why We grew so tall and reached so high You never miss it till it's gone So say goodbye Say goodbye To seasons end
So watch the old world melt away A loss regrets could never mend You never miss it till it's gone So say goodbye Say goodbye
CANADIAN SONG
Cœur de Pirate - Prémonition (Acoustic)
Recap Timeslot 00:42+Yes, I am aware of what you must think: "Boo, he sent the most obvious singer in such a scenario". And I must agree, this is the most obvious choice there is for me, as I went into this competition knowing that I had to use this one up at one point. It all comes down to this song, which not only fits the criteria of the country I was assigned to, but the winter ball theme itself.
I started listening to this particular song in October, months after the album release of "en cas de tempete, ce jardin sera ferme" and almost a year of its single release, yet it magically helped me overcome the winter depression I was about to face. This is a song that is one of my all-time favourites, and a very very personal one for me. The acoustic version that I am using differentiates from the studio one as it creates more of an impact for me - and, I can cry easily to it
Personal statement down below, proceed carefully:
Je comptais tes pas. I counted your steps. Ich zählte deine Schritte. Béatrice wrote this song to sing about her marriage: mistreatment, abuse, rape and mistakes shaped her marriage, however, the song portrays her as not only the victim, but partial perpetrator as well. I relate to this song on so many ways, but most importantly, as an early warning on what was about to happen in my life. I'm prone to mistreatment by others and treating them equally bad, especially when it comes to people I care and love. There has been one particular individual though whose relationship with I describe as an endless tug-of-war: even though the feeling was strong and possibly mutual, the misunderstandings turned into blandly put, abuse of emotional unbalance. This song stood by my side when no one supported me in the past months, and the song eventually helped me learn that I as an individual am strong enough to cut the ties and stand up for my own self, not to be influenced by the mind of other people. On s'assemble et ensemble Mais peux-tu m'attendre?
We're alike and together But can you wait for me?
Wir denken gleich und zusammen Aber kannst du auf mich warten?
The chorus of the song shaped my life: Et quand le jour se lève, je reviens vers toi Ce que je reconnais, ce n’est que vide en moi D’abus, je vis d’erreurs, tes mots comme une loi Comme une prémonition, on ne changera pas On ne changera pas
And when the sun rises I will run back to you What I now recognise, is that it's empty in me Abused and mistaken, your words act as my law And like a premonition, we will not change at all We will never change
Ever since the late days of 2018, in the midst of winter, and continuing until this day and while being part of Season 5, this has been my mantra, the lines I'd repeat every morning and evening, while walking to work, communicating with others or simply existing. I returned to the grace of this song around Week 3 and kept it ever since, as I faced a whole new level of depression while competing here and feeling miserable to send songs. I was hoping to save this up for a later point in the competition, but I try to no longer be afraid of outside influences, even though this means that this particular song could get the chop by the judges. But like a premonition, I knew, I had to send this song now.
Full lyrics in the spoiler

Winter
■ Slow Meadow ■ "Boy in a Water Globe" ■ "Boy in a Water Globe" is an instrumental song that I think truly evokes the meaning of winter. The piece sounds perfect to listen to on a cold winter's evening by the fireplace, as it soothes through your soul. The song is extremely magical, using ambient sounds and a cello to emote its chill and contemplative winter moods, backed up by a video showing all of what many northern-hemisphere people go through during the winter months. The song really makes you feel good and wish for winter to return. 3:41+
Global warming
■ Fiordmoss ■ "Motherland" ■ Global warming and climate change is the largest threat to our survival as human beings on this earth, and we must treat our Motherland correctly. I will admit that searching for this category was the hardest one, and that I was struggling at times, but when I came across this, I knew I had to send it. The lyrics really connect the important topic of Climate Change to us, and warns us of impending doom as well as our current relationship with nature.
My explanation as to how this is a climate change song is a bit long, so I'll put it in a spoiler - I urge you to read:
The first verse: "No matter how deep you dive The ancient eye can always see The iridescence of your tears"
By "the ancient eye" Fiordmoss refers to an unknowable higher power, possibly a God or some entity representing our ancestors on Earth. The ancient eye can see how "deep we dive" (reference to offshore drilling), the lengths to which we pollute and damage the environment, and they can see the pain being caused not just to the environment but to humanity itself ("the iridescence of (our) tears").
The chorus: "I understand Eat from my hand It's not all just sand It's my motherland"
Humans are constantly "eating from the hand" of the Earth, exploiting its natural resources, eating away at the environment and causing global warming, deforestation, habitat loss for endangered species, and ice cap melting. "It's not all just sand - it's my motherland" is a cry for help. Our planet isn't barren, it's rich and full of life, and is our one and only home, and the home of our ancestors and future generations. It is important to conserve it and treat it with the same kindness and warmth that it does to us.
From the fourth verse: "The water is high so lay it out" "Before I take you by surprise"
This is a direct reference to rising sea levels caused by climate change and the melting of the polar caps. Fiordmoss call on us to make changes "before I take you by surprise" --in other words, before a major environmental catastrophe occurs as a result of our inability to curb our destructive habits as a species. Notably this last line is repeated multiple times as Fiordmoss urges us to take action.
2:19+
Full lyrics:
No matter how deep you dive The ancient eye can always see
The iridescence of your tears My riddle unfolds in time
Takes you far into the right State of mind to break the charm Or deeper
I understand Eat from my hand It's not all just sand It's my motherland
Your shelter, skin, shield, your pride Words shatter teeth when you lie The water is high so lay it out Before I take you by surprise
I understand Eat from my hand It's not all just sand It's my motherland
Arctic circle country - Russia
■ Saydyy Kuo Fedorova ■ "The Udagan's Dream" ■ The Udagan's Dream is an epic song which uses the traditional Altai Khomus. Saydyy Kuo Fedorova is actually from the far north federal republic of the Sakha Republic (Yakutsk), a part of Russia's Far North, a geographic term used for the regions of Russia a part of and north of the Arctic Circle, the main requirement for this week. As well as that, the song is in the Sakha language, a minority language in Russia. The video shows the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), a global phenomena which is best viewed from the Arctic Circle itself.
The "Udagan" is a Sakha word for a she-shaman, which in tradition is much more powerful than a male-shaman. #woman 2:33+ or 2:55+ - i think 2:33 is better but not sure
