Flower Power BallCATEGORY ONE: FLOWER TITLE Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows • "Cornflowers"Recap slot: 5:24+
Apart from the title, the song also has a deeper connection to the cornflower. Cornflowers have a very ambivalent symbolism. On the one hand, in folklore, cornflowers were worn by young men in love and if the flower faded too quickly, it was taken as a sign that the man's love was not returned. This is reflected in the lyrics, as they are very sexual and intimate with a dark and twisted vibe. The unreturned love is part of them ("I am madly in love with a sad illusion, don't you see"), as the situation described in the lyrics seems to be a dream or imagination instead of reality. On the other hand, cornflowers are also connected to European nationalism, specifically in Germany and Estonia. The line "A punishment for things delayed and maybe for disbelieving." can be seen as a reference to nationalism, specifically the punishment for disbelieving, that many dictators apply, and the cornflower has a connection to the Nazis, who also made frequent usage of punishments for non-followers. Apart from these connections, the lyrics also talk about cornfields, where cornflowers grow.
Beyond the connection to the cornflower, I also think these lyrics fit the ball theme, as the flower power era was all about free love and sexual liberation.
Lyrics (NSFW):
If I had... Oh, if I only had a proper cunt I would be delighted to lift my skirt for you. I would gladly take your hard cock in my hands And bury it, ever so deeply, in the darkness of my tomb.
Come, my handsome ghost of lust, and masturbate for me I promise, it will get you out of your misery I have been sleeping on the floor for days... to keep myself from dreaming, A punishment for things delayed and maybe for disbelieving.
Don't scare away the old crows in the field, Walking in slumber... through rows and rows of corn. I am madly in love with a sad illusion, don't you see... - But, then again, aren't we all?
He will build a temple, a temple for your Schwanz*, And he will build it with his mouth. He will chant the poetry, words of heartfelt longing, All through the lonely midnight hours.
If I had a proper cunt, I'd lift my skirt for you, I'd take your hard cock in my hands and bury it deeply in my tomb.
*Schwanz is a German term for cock.
CATEGORY TWO: FLOWER VIDEO
Frida Gold • "Wovon sollen wir träumen"
Recap slot: 2:39+
While I assume that I don't have to explain the flowers in the video, I'd like to explain how the song's lyrics fit the ball theme as well. The flower power era was characterised by protests against war, politics and consumerism. This anti-consumerism can also be found in the song's lyrics. The lyrics talk about humanity losing itself by wanting more of everything. More consumption, more materialism. What is there to dream of when you can have everything?
Translated lyrics:
I'm right in the middle of it and abandon myself to everything But once you look beyond the facade, Then it always starts like this: I always sleep too long, Can't get it done and therefore feel like shit. I can't recognize myself in the shop windows, Can't find anything I like. I need the most beautiful dresses and the strongest men And a hand that will hold my hand forever. What shall we dream of if we are like this, if we are like this, if we are like this? What can we believe in? Where will this take us? What will come and what will stay if we are like this? I feel empty and the night weighs heavily, So heavily on my shoulders. All the hope that once was is long gone. Wasted another night just like this. I've been searching and searching in the very back corners For eyes that interest me. It has never worked before but I just won't get it. What shall we dream of if we are like this, if we are like this, if we are like this? What can we believe in? Where will this take us? What will come and what will stay if we are like this? We are drifting through the clubs of the city, Through strange hands but we remain hungry. Then we wake up with ever changing lovers Of whom we thought that we would never leave them. We can't breathe anymore and we forget to eat. We drink too much, it remains a game without goal. When will this end? When will we get out of here? What shall we dream of? Where is our home? Where is our home? What shall we dream of if we are like this, if we are like this, if we are like this? What can we believe in? Where will this take us? What will come and what will stay if we are like this? We are drifting through the clubs of the city, Through strange hands but we remain hungry. Then we wake up with ever changing lovers Of whom we thought that we would never leave them. What shall we dream of?
CATEGORY THREE: FLOWER POWER SONG
Jefferson Airplane • "Somebody to Love"
Recap slot: 1:05+
This song from 1967 is an iconic hymn of the flower power era and the band Jefferson Airplane is a prime example of psychedelic rock, the genre that defined the era. "Somebody to Love" was popular during the famous Summer of Love, that happened in 1967 and was the first peak of the hippie movement, in which up to 100k hippies would get together on the streets of San Francisco (where the band lived) to protest peacefully, take drugs and make music and love. The song has a thematic connection to the values of the hippie movement, specifically free love, which some people, like the band and the songwriter, disagreed with. Instead of practicing polygamous love and sex, the song promoted loyalty and monogamy and became an iconic hippie song. Jefferson Airplane also participated at the legendary Woodstock Festival, in the summer of 1969, which is seen as the second peak of the flower power era, where they performed this song among others. All in all I think this is a perfect fit for the challenge because besides being a bop, the song is a symbol of the flower power era and hippie movement up to this day.
Lyrics:
When the truth is found to be lies And all the joy within you dies Don't you want somebody to love Don't you need somebody to love Wouldn't you love somebody to love You better find somebody to love
When the garden flowers, baby are dead, yes and Your mind, your mind is so full of red Don't you want somebody to love Don't you need somebody to love Wouldn't you love somebody to love You better find somebody to love
Your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his Yeah, but in your head, baby I'm afraid you don't know where it is Don't you want somebody to love Don't you need somebody to love Wouldn't you love somebody to love You better find somebody to love
Tears are running down and down and down your breast And your friends, baby they treat you like a guest Don't you want somebody to love Don't you need somebody to love Wouldn't you love somebody to love You better find somebody to love

3:07+
First Flower, Dandelion. (Symbol of Nostalgia) This one of my favorite flowers since i was little, here it's called ''Diente De León'' [Lion's Teeth]. It's brings joy but also show how things pass by and how life is ephimeral
| LYRICS #1
I don't care
Where I go
When I die
I'm still alive
Oh, I've seen you this way before
Nothing ever changes
I want satisfaction
I want satisfaction
And I love [?]
It's a sick attraction
It's a sick attraction
And I’m never gonna get enough
It's too late to leave and baby
I'm too dead to love you
Too dead to love you, dandelion
Too dead to love you, dandelion
No forbidden pleasure
I come unhinged
And pray before your pale eyes
And suck you in
To make me feel everything
And I’m never gonna get enough
Too dead to love you
Too dead to love you
Too dead to love you, dandelion
Too dead to love you, dandelion
Too dead to love you, dandelion
| Category #2: Flowery Music Video ''Holy Water'' by Anjulie & Natalia Lafourcade ft Phyno
0:40+
For the second choice, went with something risky. This time flower is a symbol of sexual empowerment. In this song talks about sexual liberation and confidence, we all know what Holy Water stans for. The video is dripping in flowe and she blossoms in this liberation. Also the latin flavour gives it a fresh touch. I know some may not like it but I love it and it's a bop. TOMAME, TOMAME, TOMALA
| Lyrics #2
I know you're begging and pleading
Baby you can't hide
Deep down you're broken and bleeding
Barely alive
I'll take you down to the river
On a moonlit night
Feel the fever running through your bones
Way down deep in your soul
Let me give you that holy water
Dripping down, dripping down, dripping down
Let me give you that holy water
Dripping down, dripping down, dripping down
Dripping down, dripping down, down
Vamos lento
Esto es el agua bendita
La flor de mi sexo
Agua bendita
La flor de mi sexo
Agua bendita
La flor de mi sexo
Lo que llevo dentro (Dentro, dentro)
Let me give you that holy water
Dripping down, dripping down, dripping down
Déjame darte de beber agua sagrada
Tómame, tómame, tómala
(Tómala, tómala)
Tómame, tómame, tómala
Tómame, tómame, tómala
Tómame, tómame, tómala
Tómame, tómame, tómala
See I just wanna lift you from below
You know you love it when I give you what you want

| Category #3: Flower Power Era ''Maybe'' by Janis Joplin
1:32+
For the last choice, I went with one of my mom's favorite songs, the Flower Power Era was a movement against wars and violence, looking for peace, this era and song for me is a symbol of Hope. She is a legend of this movement and I chose a live performance cause it shows best what this era is all about, its very organic, personal and reflective. | Lyrics #3
Maybe
Oh if I could pray and I try, dear,
You might come back home, home to me.
Maybe
Whoa, if I could ever hold your little hand
Oh you might understand.
Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, yeah.
Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe dear
I guess I might have done something wrong,
Honey I'd be glad to admit it.
Oh, come on home to me!
Honey maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe yeah.
Well I know that it just doesn't ever seem to matter, baby,
Oh honey, when I go out or what I'm trying to do,
Can't you see I'm still left here
And I'm holding on in needing you.
Please, please, please, please,
Oh won't you reconsider babe.
Now come on, I said come back,
Won't you come back to me!
Maybe dear, oh maybe, maybe, maybe,
Let me help you show me how.
Honey, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe,
Maybe, maybe, maybe, yeah,
Maybe, maybe, maybe, yeah.
Ooh!

Ashley Nicolette FrangipaneFlower Power Ball1. Send a song with a type of flower in its title Oscar - "Daffodil Days" (timeslot 2:18+)"A girl once told me I was like a flower growing in the shadows." Daffodils are said to represent rebirth and new beginnings, as it is one of the first perennials to bloom after the winter frost, and this idea is embodied in the lyrical content of "Daffodil Days", particularly in the chorus, "Whatever good thing comes my way, you'll feel this change". The lyrics throughout the song are continuously optimistic and refreshing, such as "And now you're cured from every past, just say it straight 'cause nothing ever lasts", and it is sonically warm, summery and hopeful, therefore being a perfect representation of a daffodil.LYRICS[Verse 1] I never thought that I'd be wrong I always knew this day would come, slowly And now it has, I'm looking out I'm feeling for the things you said to me, but
[Chorus] Don't waste away The feelings that we have remain It tastes the same Daffodil days
I won't break Whatever good thing comes my way You'd feel this change Daffodil days
[Verse 2] You're on your own But that's ok Just hold in time, so there's no weight on you And now you're cured from every past Just say it straight 'cause, nothing ever lasts
[Chorus] x2 Don't waste away The feelings that we have remain It tastes the same Daffodil days
I won't break Whatever good thing comes my way You'd feel this change Daffodil days 2. Send a song with a flowery music video UQiYO - "2 -memories-" (timeslot 2:58+)The music video for "2 -memories-" is a compilation of the life cycle of a flower - growth, life, and death - and fits beautifully with the hopeful message of the song. The song, likewise, talks about the cycle of life, "Summer ends, fall ends, winter ends, spring ends", and the beauty, which I think links nicely with flowers as a whole. I was going to try to post the lyrics here too but Google Translate has them fucked up so if you like, you can find a slightly inaccurate version of the lyrics here.
3. Send a song from the Flower Power era Mama Cass Elliott - "Make Your Own Kind of Music" (timeslot 2:06+)
Cass Elliott first started out her career as part of The Mamas and the Papas, one of the leading groups of the Flower Power era from 1965 to 1968, before embarking on her own solo career when the group split. While not necessarily a household name, "Mama Cass" set new standards for what was acceptable for female singers, even appearing naked and tattooed for a music magazine, therefore, in my opinion, being a perfect example of what the Flower Power movement embraced. The song "Make Your Own Kind of Music" was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, two prominent songwriters of the Flower Power era, and then re-recorded by Cass Elliott in 1969.
LYRICS
Nobody can tell ya; There's only one song worth singin', They may try and sell ya, 'Cause it hangs them up to see someone like you. But you've gotta make your own music Sing your own special song, Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along. You're gonna be knowing The loneliest kind of lonely, It may be rough goin', Just to do your thing's the hardest thing to do. But you've gotta make your own music Sing your own special song, Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along. So if you cannot take my hand, And if you must be goin', I will understand. But you've gotta make your own music Sing your own special song, Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along.

FIRST CATEGORY: FLOWER IN THE TITLE "Paparouna" by Nalyssa Green
(2:10+)
For the first category this week, I decided to go with a song in the greek language, sung by one of the most creative and unique greek artists out there. It's "Paparouna" (translated to "Poppy") by Nalyssa Green.
Lyrics:
I like keeping fire Close to my face Dogs gather nightly Barking my death
I'll pick a poppy And watch it while it dies I'll smoke it and feel Red in my insights
Blue clouds I exhale To make my own sky That's why I never left For evermore I stayed
Such stories exist That make time stand still Do not forget to drink water The flow, your depths to fill SECOND CATEGORY: MUSIC VIDEO WITH FLOWERS "Humaniora" by Sound of Ceres
(2:26+)
For the second category I chose the song "Humaniora" by Sound of Ceres. “Humaniora” can be described as an ethereal and dreamy song, paired with a very fitting music video which matches the song’s slurry fantasia with surreal, floral imagery, which is just perfect for this category.
THIRD CATEGORY: FLOWER POWER ERA "Venus" by Shocking Blue
(1:25+)
For the third category, I decided to take a somewhat different approach to the topic. The hippy culture was one of the several "counterculture" movements of the mid-late Sixties, starting from the US and quickly spreading to the rest of the world. Shocking Blue is a Dutch band formed in 1967, that took a big influence from the hippy culture and fit that genre. I chose their biggest hit "Venus", which is a classic late 60s pop rock song with mild psych elements, straight from the flower power era, showing their hippie influence.
Lyrics:
A goddess on a mountain top Was burning like a silver flame The summit of beauty and love And Venus was her name She's got it Yeah baby, she's got it Well, I'm your Venus I'm your fire At your desire Well, I'm your Venus I'm your fire At your desire Her weapons were her crystal eyes Making every man mad Black as the dark night she was Got what no one else had She's got it Yeah baby, she's got it Well, I'm your Venus I'm your fire At your desire Well, I'm your Venus I'm your fire At your desire She's got it Yeah baby, she's got it Well, I'm your Venus I'm your fire At your desire Well, I'm your Venus I'm your fire At your desire

Gemma CollinsHistorically, flowers have been associated with femininity, including feminine traits such as gentleness, beauty, empathy, and sensitivity. Being a strong and independent feminine queen myself, I decided to connect all three of my songs in some way to the central concept of femininity, and particularly the way women display strength and independence.
FLOWER TITLE
3:06 or 3:48 Karin Park - "Blue Roses"
This concept of femininity is especially visible in "Blue Roses," in which the protagonist, Karin Park, sings about her difficult upbringing: the implication that she lost her virginity at 11, and the way she grew up isolated and largely friendless, more interested in spending time alone on her art and music than making friends. However, this rough upbringing hardened her and made her into a strong, independent woman, one who doesn't trust so easily and is able to defend herself from predatory men. While she is still dedicated to her art, she is also able to hunt and use weapons, traits historically associated with men. In the song she identifies with blue roses, which are incredibly rare and almost impossible to find in nature, a symbol of her own uniqueness, independence, and majesty. Blue roses are also known for their splendid beauty and the thorns that lurk beneath their petals, which they use as self-defense and protection; this also reflects the protagonist's own prickly interior and dedication to self-defense which are shown heavily throughout the lyrics in lines such as "stay off my sacred land". Lyrics: Roses – midnight blue roses Blue as the sapphire, desire Blue as the poison I was born with a pearl under my tongue But I lost it when I was eleven Ever since I have always looked over Over my shoulder I have never really had many true friends I would rather play the flute and piano If you see me with a gun in my hand: Stay off my sacred land! Roses – we are the roses Blue as the royalty, majesty Blue as the ocean Stay off my sacred land! Roses – midnight blue roses Blue as the sapphire, desire Blue as a poison I know how to slay a fish, make a fire I know how to stay awake when I’m tired I am careful with the things that I do The love I want is true Blue roses grow in my garden Know how to write But this pen must be sharpened See the difference, When the money comes in, What world we’re living in … Oh, I see you got a ladder to my window Will you stand there when the cold wind blows? Do you want to come inside for a coffee? And smoke some home-grown? I’ve been numb, but I’m becoming a rebel A bed shared between a god and a devil If you see me with a gun in my hand: Stay off my sacred land! Roses – we are the roses Blue as the royalty, majesty Blue as the ocean Stay off my sacred land! Roses – midnight blue roses Blue as the sapphire, desire Blue as the poison Kedjor o bojor (Eng. balls and chains) Stay off my sacred land! Roses – roses – roses Stay off my sacred land! Roses – roses – roses Blue as the poison Kedjor o bojor... Stay off my sacred land … FLOWER VIDEO Hoàng Thùy Linh - Bánh Trôi Nước (Woman)I've decided to go with a biological " Woman". Throughout the entirety of the video, flowers are highly present throughout. Vietnam is known for producing many bright, colourful flowers. Flowers such as the lotus (which Vietnamese people use as an offering to the gods), orchid and chrysanthemum which are all heavily used in the video are some of national flowers of Vietnam and are some of the pinnacles of Buddhism, Vietnam's predominant religion. The video recreates the beautiful scenery of famous places in Vietnam such as Ninh Binh, Tan Lap, Trang An, Bai Dinh pagoda, connecting the disjointed scenes to create an abstract story about the body, which is shown with Hoang's majestic flowery outfits. The lyrics are based off of an 18th-century poem. Initially, the poem speaks about food, but the dumpling becomes a metaphor for the woman and her body. It's a lament on the social and even sexual powerlessness of women in 18th-century Vietnam, yet ends with a feminist proclamation of power. Lyrics: Vietnamese: Thân em vừa trắng là vừa tròn Bảy nồi ba chìm với nước non Rắn nát mặc dầu tay kẻ nặn Mà em vẫn giữ tấm lòng son
English: My body is powdery white and round I sink and bob like a mountain in a pond The hand that kneads me is hard and rough You can’t destroy my true red heart FLOWER POWER The 5th Dimension - Aquarius
"Aquarius" was a song from the hippie musical Hair sung by the hippie positive group The 5th Dimension. The lyrics were based upon the astrological belief that the world would soon be entering, the "Age of Aquarius", an age of love, light, and humanity. This is mentioned in the opening line of the song. The flower power movement in its prime was a non-violent ideology, with the era being partially defined by The Age of Aquarius, a referral to the height of the hippie movement in the 60s. Peace will guide the planets And love will steer the starsAccording to this scientific essay, people associated with the counter-culture of the flower power movement welcomed the dawning of a New Age, scientific fact. This New Age would be guided more by so called "mystic crystal revelations" than traditional science. The first part celebrated the dawning of a counter-cultural utopia — a new America in an Age of Aquarius. Harmony and understanding Sympathy and trust abounding No more falsehoods or derisions Golden living dreams of visions And the mind's true liberationThe Flower Power era started as an opposition movement to the Vietnam War. This song talks about the harmony that was aspired to during the counterculture revolution. Furthermore, the falsehood of that era included the My Lai Massacre, which was covered up by the American government until it was leaked in 1969 (the year the song was released), as well as the assassination of black rights liberation activist MLKJ. The song was embraced by the hippie movement, for it was sung by the crowd at Woodstock (the theme of which was An Aquarian Exposition), and the band also performed it at the Harlem Cultural Festival, which was deemed as the "Black Woodstock". Lyrics: When the moon is in the Seventh House And Jupiter aligns with Mars Then peace will guide the planets And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius Age of Aquarius Aquarius Aquarius
Harmony and understanding Sympathy and trust abounding No more falsehoods or derisions Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation And the mind's true liberation Aquarius Aquarius
When the moon is in the Seventh House And Jupiter aligns with Mars Then peace will guide the planets And love will steer the stars
This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius Age of Aquarius Aquarius Aquarius Aquarius Aquarius
Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in Oh, let it shine, c'mon
Now everybody just sing along Let the sun shine in Open up your heart and let it shine on in When you are lonely, let it shine on
Got to open up your heart and let it shine on in And when you feel like you've been mistreated And your friends turn away Just open your heart, and shine it on in Yours truly, Gemma
