ITV TO START RECEIVING SUBMISSIONS According to INFE Azerbaijan, on 7 January Ictimai Television started reception of the songs for Azerbaijani internal selection for ESC 2021. The deadline for the submission of the songs is 19 January.
It has also been announced that the head of Azerbaijani delegation for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 will be the famous composer Isa Melikov. Just for the twist it would be interesting to get her with a ballad after last year's song lol. Btw. nijat what was the reception / commercial success of Cleopatra in Azerbaijan itself?

Can't really say anything definitively since we do not have official charts in Azerbaijan; but based on my limited observation, it was received very positively amongst specific audiences (e.g. ESC/popular music fans) rather than the masses.

UPDATES: THE FIRST HINT "This song is about a world-famous dancer. Her name means the Moon and the day separately, and the Sun, reading together. The lady, who danced for famous figures and then wrote "innocent" letters to her daughter, was eventually executed. On her sixth attempt, Efendi starts everything all over again, like the woman mentioned in the song..." (translation of "INFE Azerbaijan" post) All of these hints remind me of one person - Margaretha Geertruida MacLeod, better known as Mata Hari. Mata Hari was a famous exotic dancer; her artistic name can be translated as "Sun" (or "eye of the day", if translated literally) in a local Malay language; and she was executed by firing squad in France for the convictions of espionage. If so, one of the National Selection entries is about or does at least have references to Mata Hari. Azerbaijani delegation might as well continue the tradition of choosing songs about historical female figures for Efendi.

I have been looking for updates from INFE Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani delegation for Eurovision Song Contest recently with no results, however, since both have been staying silent on the issue of Azerbaijani representation in ESC.
Instead, some Eurovision blogs have indicated that Azerbaijani entry will be released on the second week of March and that the entry was selected already in February. Hence, it is likely that the updates on Azerbaijani entry will be provided soon.
