WEEK 4: TIME FLIES, EVERYTHING DIES
Baba Yaga Ruth Blake 2:12+
This week, team Sis Anne Diarrhoea was paired together, and tasked with pulling a song about a folk legend together with a song about a dystopian future. Right as we started, we wanted to tie in our respective cultures with this challenge. How Bulgarian culture could be tied together with Japanese culture, we had no clue. However, we came to the conclusion that the legend should contain themes that are present in both Japanese and Bulgarian culture, with the dystopian future sharing fears about what a dystopian future could be. So, we ended up with the songs we did.
The legend we tackled was the Baba Yaga, a Slavic creature who usually appears as a deformed or ferocious-looking old woman. While her depictions range from a child-eating monster, to someone helping a protagonist find his missing bride, we went with both of these definitions, as those depiction closely resembles that of a Yōkai known as the Yama-uba. Both of these women have been shown to be both cruel and benevolent, with their cruel sides involve them stealing children away from their families long before they are ready to leave them.
"Baba Yaga" is a song taken from the second studio album by Cambridge, England's Ruth Blake. Ruth is a contemporary folk songs, taking inspiration in creatures from all over Europe and beyond. She strings complicated stories together with simple beats, weaving a captivating melody that ensnares you like one of the monsters she so often sings about.
"Mmm mm Baba Yaga I am calling you, calling you
Dig deeper, dig deeper, dig up the dead
Knit their bones into homes for the souls that you’ve fed
Knit their bones into homes for the souls that you’ve fed"
Ruth, in her song, shares a condensed version of the tale that has been told countless generations over. With the terrifying tale, Ruth adds to the depth of the story with the music video, which shows a paper-show version of a tale where the Baba Yaga was feeling benevolent, and not hateful.
And since the theme asked for a folk legend as well as a dystopian future, we have provided a tied in story as well. The Baba Yaga, when she feels cruel, she has a tendancy to steal children from their homes, and kill them, using their flesh to fertilize the ground where she grows crops. One of the most common features in dystopias, both fictional and real, are the rapantness of war. War steals children from their families, either by displacing families, or by the killing of children. Additionally, the first clearly doccumented instance of the Baba Yaga was in 1755 in Mikhail V. Lomonosov's "Rossiiskaia grammatika". This book was published during the middle of Edo period of Japan, where the notion of Ukiyo dominated life. Ukiyo was the standard way of describing the pleasure-seeking individuals in Edo. While the literal translation of Ukiyo means transient world, the artworks produced were anything but. Two of the most famous pieces of artwork from this time is The Great Wave off Kanagawa and Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre. These two pieces show off how Ukiyo truely was a darker period than many would believe it to be.
"STORY OF DUTY" is the 9th single released by the Japanese pop group BiSH (which stands for BRAND-NEW iDOL SHiT), formed in 2015 as the successor to one of Sis Anne Desit's week one artists, BiS. Often called a punk band without instruments, BiSH have been known for their ecclectic sound since debut, with one of their debut songs, OTKN, quite literaly being a Celtic Punk song. The group currently consists of Cent Chihiro Chittiii, Aina The End (Known for her collaboration with Mondo Grosso in "False Sympathy"), Momoko Gumi Company, Hashiyasume Atsuko, Lingling,& Ayuni D. STORY OF DUTY is yet another feather in the sound-bending group, as it is their first dabble into hyperpop, often labelled as "The Music Of The Future", a fitting genre for a dystopian future song. STORY OF DUTY is a song created in collaboration with Call of Duty Mobile as a way to promote the game.
"Let's find the definition of existence, that can be found only once in human life with that hand
Here's how to open up a future that's hard to breathe
Even if you can't run with sludge
The story is huge in the future"
The song shares the same sentiment that is omnipotent in dystopian fiction. "The world is your oyster. You can do whatever you want". Backdropped by the ruins of a prosperous city, with helicopters, tanks, and airplanes raining down distruction from the heavens, the song is an anthem for the children seen in the city. While the obvious war and distruction may have stolen their parents from them, like a reverse Baba Yaga, the six girls of BiSH are trying to help them take this dystopia, and change it into a utopia, akin to the facade that the Edo period Ukiyo put on for the rest of the world.

WEEK 4: TIME FLIES, EVERYTHING DIES
4A: FOLK LEGEND
Icarus Wings Tom Baxter
Let us take you up to the sky and present you one of the best-known ancient Greek legends. The story of Icarus is a story of pride and downfall. His father Daedalus crafted two pairs of wings made of feathers and wax, one for himself and the other for his son Icarus. He advised his son not to fly too low to the sea nor too high to the sun, instead to follow Daedalus' flight path. However, Icarus was overcome with excitement from being able to fly that he wanted to fly higher and closer to the sun. The sun's heat melted the wax, and Icarus was losing his wings until his arms became bare. He realized this too late and Icarus plummeted to the sea below and drowned.
Tom Baxter's song "Icarus Wings" perfectly depicts this tragic tale. The 6.5-minute track starts off slow, as if Icarus' flight just took off. However, the higher he flew, the faster the pace picked up. The climax of the song is the peak of his flight, when things start to go awry for Icarus. The lyrics "I'm too high" get repeated here. The singer then utters "No, no, no, no, no..." (is this William?) before the song plummets to a gloomy end.
LYRICS
The stars conspired to bring me here, on a day like this; The sun beats down upon my pride, like a wounded star.
What did you want from me? Why did you bring me here? I'm facing my foolish fate, oh I'm too high, too close to the sun; I'm too high, my curious Icarus wings melt from my skin.
Don't stand, don't stand so close to me, I'll bring you down, But I'll fly, oh I'll fly beneath the sun Watch me burn, oh, watch me burn.
What did you want from me? Why did you bring me here? I'm facing my foolish fate, oh I'm too high, too close to the sun; I'm too high, my curious Icarus wings melt from my skin.
Oh, I'm too high, too close to the sun; Too high, my curious Icarus wings melt from my skin.
I'm too high... I'm too high... I'm too high... I'm too high...
Oh, I'm too high... I'm too high... I'm too high... I'm too high...
No, no, no, no, no...
4B: DYSTOPIAN FUTURE
Slow aYia
Opposing the flight of Icarus is a more earthly, real and earnest, dystopian future story. "Slow" by aYia represents a world in which people are isolated and long for togetherness. Love is as sparse as food in this future. As described in the lyrics of the song, people are "drowning in a soft skinned earth", a very dark image of death and the possible end of the human race. "Everything's turning upside down", aYia sings, the grim future of the world we know made very evident.
Not just the lyrics but also the sound and visuals of the song are giving the dystopian vibe we were looking for. A world is shown to us that might not just be our future, but also our present with the current world pandemic going on.
LYRICS
Soft earth So soft Only, only soft, soft earth I am drowning in it I am sinking in your skin
Sublime The constant need for lush
Going down Hovering over it Going down Everything's turning upside down
Sublime A constant need for lush The most essential rush You want but cannot touch You cannot touch it
Bright lights From a silver dome Not sure Why you're trying alone Hovering over the night Everything's turning upside down

WEEK 4: TIME FLIES, EVERYTHING DIES
4A: FOLK LEGEND
"Black Dog Rides Tonight" Carys
The legend of the Black Dog is one of the most prolific folk tales of the British Isles. The Celts, English, and Irish all have their own stories regarding the Black Dog. Some describe the black dog as a hellhound, another as a manifestation of the devil himself, or a shapeshifter. Regardless, each of these cultures agree that the Black Dog signifies death, and that seeing one at night in countryside means your demise is imminent.
"Black Dog Rides Tonight" tells the tale of the black dog in England in a way very reminiscent of an ancient chant or choral tune. The song tells the story of those who try to escape the Black Dog's significance of death. The characters in the story attempt to run away, even hiding in a church, but the singer says that the "church was no sanctuary from the black dog." The Song follows the black dog as it roams the countryside claiming lives and souls for the underworld.
LYRICS
Unfortunately, the lyrics from Black Dog Rides Tonight has not been posted online.
4B: DYSTOPIAN FUTURE
"BODY/PRISON" Health ft. Perturbator
"Body/Prison" is a song by the band Health, and features French synthwave artist Perturbator. The song itself is overtly industrial but yet somehow has a melancholic vibe to it. The theme of the song is mostly regret, regarding bad decisions, bad relationships, and bad circumstances. The singer seems to be trapped in a dystopian world in which society has completely collapsed, and resources are scarce. The chorus of the song exclaims "Go back to the water, start it again, go back to the trees, start it again" which possibly signifies the lack of these resources being available, thus the location of them being so important. Other lyrics throughout the song, specifically the 2nd verse, also alludes to the fact that the singer is trying to come to terms with great loss, possibly due to either their own actions or the actions of humanity itself.
LYRICS
We should've been enemies We could've never met We should've been enemies Start it again Go back to the water Start it again Go back to the trees Start it again The blood on the altar Things aren't what they seem Things aren't what they seem Faith What difference does it Make We forgot it away We're trapped in a dream Pain And who we choose to Blame Are you on your own Or stuck here with me We should've been enemies We could've never met Start it again Go back to the water Start it again Go back to the trees Start it again The blood on the altar Things aren't what they seem definitely didnt steal maritn's post

WEEK 4: TIME FLIES, EVERYTHING DIES
Send a song about a folk legend.
Paraguaya Juana Molina
Juana Rosario Molina is an Argentine singer, songwriter and actress, based in Buenos Aires. She is known for her distinctive sound, considered an exponent of folktronica, although it has also been described as ambient, experimental, neofolk, chill-out, indietronica, psychedelic, indie pop, and progressive folk. Despite the initial negative reaction to her music in her home country, music critics have consistently championed Molina's body of work, praising her music and experimentation. In 2013, El País wrote, "she established herself as the star of the avant-garde sound of her country in the world." Writing for The Guardian, Robin Denselow called her the "one-time Queen of Latin chill" and wrote: "[she] has built up a global cult following as one of the most experimental musicians in Argentina."
The song "Paraguaya" is taking from her 2017 album "Halo",which refers to the Argentine myths of "bad light" in which white lights are seen around the bones of decomposing animals in the field. Halo's 12 songs “abound with hypnotic rhythms that seem taken from timeless rituals, with timbral explorations and changing soundscapes, with mysterious lyrics that often touch on witchcraft, premonition and dreams, always used as metaphors for emotional states, with voices that sometimes move away from the word and the meaning to be reduced to abstract phonemes and onomatopoeia".
"Paraguaya" is about the astonishing rituals of the Guaraní (which is a big indigenious group in Paraguay), particularly the spell widely used and created by Guaraní people - called "Payé". It is a spell destined to achieve a certain objective and that is made by a healer according to the desired purpose. This can range from conquering someone's heart, avoiding dangers, that bullets bounce off the body of the person who possesses it, to happiness in life, luck in the game, avoiding diseases, etc. There are also other employees to cause painful and incurable diseases in enemies. A shaman of the Guarani tribe, they are also called payé. He is the sorcerer, the doctor. the medium. Rue, is a basic element for the page in cases of being charmed by love.
You will burn the rue, you will prepare the potion, and on moonlit nights you will repeat the prayer: "Nice moon there with your light you illuminate the brew I invoke you, help me to achieve what I have asked."
LYRICS (translated to English)
You will burn the rue, you will prepare the potion, and on moonlit nights you will repeat the prayer: "Nice moon there with your light you illuminate the brew I invoke you, help me to achieve what I have asked. "
She drank it, drank it all, fell in love, fell in love like me. A passion devours us, but soon I don't even look at it. It is haunted, and I no longer value it, I don't cry for it, I ignore it.
I'll burn the rue, brew my potion. If there is a moon tonight, I'll reverse the illusion "Nice moon there with your light you illuminate the brew I invoke you, help me to get what I have asked "
And he forgot me, I drank it all and he forgot me, he forgot me like me. And now that he forgot me, I am the haunted one and I don't forget Oh, what a regret! oh, moon, now I adore him, and again I cry.
Send a song about a dystopian future.
Grief, Dance to Death Madben, Rebeka Warrior, Manu le Malin
The challenge was to send a song about a dystopian future. A futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst-case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political system. Dystopias are often characterized by dehumanization, tyrannical governments, environmental disaster, or other characteristics associated with a cataclysmic decline in society.
In this song, we get the dystopian feels from both the music video and the powerful lyrics. The elements of the video are very post-apocalyptic. From what I understood from my analysis of the video, this man is a soldier and he sees that he has no choice but to go to war, and that everything, absolutely everything is conducive to making war. The government and the society that is constantly pressuring him to follow an order results in him giving up and just following whatever the higher rank imposes on him. Thus, all objects that fly are sources of conflict. As much TV, as justice, religion, oil and even weapons. Overall, the clip and the music reflect the ambient nihilism and madness of a humanity under control quite well. Throughout the end of the song, the instrumental and the overall ambiance of the track gets extremely loud, which in my opinion mostly refers to the ideology that thinks that we live in a simulation and this person is trying to break free. I will be providing the lyrics below, translated to English by me. They pretty much explain themselves.
I've been lied to all along There is no reason either No sense in the universe No decency, everything is ordeal
LYRICS (translated to English)
I've been lied to all along There's no sun There is no mountain There is no wonder
I've been lied to all along There is no reason either No sense in the universe No decency, everything is ordeal
Society is a bitch Capital a motherfucker We must burn the police
I've been lied to all along There's no sun There is no mountain There is no wonder
What I see is a big fire I see oxen and lepers Stand up accused I will judge you myself
I SENTENCE YOU to
Dance, dance To death Dance, dance To death Dance to death

WEEK 4: TIME FLIES, EVERYTHING DIES Send a song about a folk legend.
Santa Muerte Brodka
For the first category, we have chosen the song "Santa Muerte" by the Polish indie singer Brodka. Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte (Spanish for Our Lady of the Holy Death), often shortened to Santa Muerte, is an idol, female deity or folk saint in Mexican and Mexican-American neo-pagan folk Catholicism. A personification of death, she is associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the afterlife by her devotees. Despite condemnation by leaders of the Catholic Church and more recently Evangelical movemements, her cult has become increasingly prominent since the turn of the 21st century.
Originally appearing as a male figure, Santa Muerte now generally appears as a skeletal female figure, clad in a long robe and holding one or more objects, usually a scythe and a globe. Her robe can be of any color, as more specific images of the figure vary widely from devotee to devotee and according to the rite being performed or the petition being made.
The song is inspired by Brodka’s trip to Mexico: "I was surprised at how people of this country approach to the matter of death. Children at a very young age are taught that death isn’t anything distressing. It’s just another stage of life, “life after life”. The song is a record of the conversation with death, but one you’d have with a friend."
LYRICS
Hey, little death I can feel your breath upon my neck Hey not quite yet Come with me and I will make you tame
Soon you will find A magic light
Hey, once you're mine You will never stop to wonder why Hey I will come Take your hand Together we are one
Soon you and I Will rule the night
Bring your love and say Nothing is wrong I'll carry your bones wherever Bring your dusty dread Keep me with you Hold me and stay forever
Hey, sing with me Father death how sweet your love can be Oh, Mother night I fear the day I wish it never may come
Soon what was said Will be undone
Bring your love and say Nothing is wrong I'll carry your bones wherever Bring your dusty dread Keep me with you Hold me and stay forever
Send a song about a dystopian future.
Snow Angel Braids
For the second category, we have chosen to send the group Braids with a 9-minute long single, “Snow Angel,” in which bandleader Raphaelle Standell-Preston embarks on an apocalyptic and existential rumination. The slow-building track, which was produced by Death Cab For Cutie‘s Chris Walla, was written just after the 2016 US election. But let’s be honest, it takes on a whole new dimension with the world’s current situation. About the track, she explained:
"For me, it was deeply therapeutic to write and sing this song; saying things out loud can help us to not feel so alone, can help validate our natural fears about the future of our world, and can bring to light some of the hard questions that many of us are asking ourselves. I believe that art can change our relationship to fear. We hope this song can offer you a moment of catharsis and relief, in the same way writing and performing it has for us."
Since this is a 9-minute song, it is hard to analyze the lyrics. However, I think you will fully get the meaning once you read them, I promise you it is an experience. I bolded the most important lyrics which include the ones on the third verse and the outro.
If any of the judges isn't available to listen to the whole 9-minute song (although I obviously fully encourage you to do so), you can start it around the 3-4 minutes to get the whole meaning.
LYRICS
I think I killed my plant from over-watering it Things don't grow the same in the wintertime I slipped on the stairs, winding myself of air I can't do anything but lie here for a moment
I am a snow angel Makes the bitterness feel romantic This year there isn't someone to keep me warm I'm a bad girl with a cuddle and a budding rose
I came home early from the show tonight I was feeling low 'cause I went out alone again Dancing 'round my house, age of 17 I remember when this was done for me
I am a snow angel Makes the bitterness feel romantic This year there isn't someone to keep me warm I'm a bad girl with a cuddle and a budding rose
Snow angel, snow angel, snow angel, snow angel Snow angel, snow angel, snow angel, snow angel Snow angel, snow angel, snow angel, snow angel Snow angel, snow angel, snow angel, snow angel
Focusing on a flower The clouds overhead The lips of my lover Mother Nature and her offerings A reminder that life is beautiful still Amongst all the madness, the chaos The need to march in the streets Fake news, and indoctrination Closed borders, and deportation I've been deeply sad A sadness deeper than after reduction Am I only just realizing the injustice that exists? Cloaked in white privilege since the day I was born Blinders on, blinders on It's a feeling where I wonder if everything is gonna be okay And when I say everything, I'm not talking about my little everything, my little life I mean the planet, I mean the oceans, People fighting for the right to a safe life The polars bears floating away on a brink of ice What have we done to them? The only way I can ease the all consuming, rising feeling, As we reach no return is to grab That pillow and give a good, long scream Sit with the release Maybe go for a run Come home, turn on the TV, go numb for a bit Look at the suffering that I cause, that I cause, that I, I, I, I, I I recycle, I compost, I buy second-hand God, I'm disgusting Like that's enough of a plan Staring at my iPhone Green smoothie recipe How to start your day right Slipped right through my hand Clean up the glass on the ground Push little sharp bits around Whole world's going to shit This white girl contributes to it Oh, I wanna stop trying to hide it, oh, I wanna stop trying to hide it, oh, I wanna stop trying to hide it, oh I wanna stop trying Will the lying be around when my child is born? Should I even have a child at all? This world is full up I wanna be a mother, but I shouldn't bring in another I wanna be a mother, but I shouldn't bring in another What is it to mother? We all need a mother Kill our Mother Earth Stab her and watch her, stab her and watch her (Bleed) Stab her and watch her, stab her and watch her (Bleed) Gather around, gather around, don't watch her, watch her (Bleed) Stab her and watch her, stab her and watch her, and watch her (Bleed) For you and me Four cute little outfits straight off the runway Sparkles, high socks, vintage, no vanity Brown paper bag, heard they were going green Twenty bucks at H&M, baby
Can I get off of this ride? I'm feeling dizzy It's moving way too fast, and I wanna come down Can I get off of this ride? I'm feeling dizzy It's moving way too fast, and I wanna come down Come down, come down I wanna come down Can I get off of this ride? I'm feeling dizzy It's moving way too fast, and I wanna come down Come down, come down, I wanna come down Can I get off of this ride? I'm feeling dizzy It's moving way too fast, and I wanna come down
