"Mujeres" by Lucille Dupin Week 6: Welcome To Salem: EVOCATION
0:53+
Evocation is the act of calling upon or summoning a spirit, demon, deity or other supernatural agents, in the Western mystery tradition. Comparable practices exist in many religions and magical traditions and may employ the use of mind-altering substances with and without uttered word formulas.
In Latinamerica evocation is used on traditional Santería and Witchcraft
This song has double meaning, It has it's mystical theme a connection with mother nature that in Latinamerican culture it's represented as a woman figure ''Pacha Mama''. But also the songs talks about the witchhunt that happened decades ago in Latinamerica, where many powerful women were killed and accused of witchcraft.
The song it's a mystical celebration femeninity, it evokes the spirits of all this powerful women who preceded us and they forged the path. It's an evocation to all those strong females that died every day and fight for equality.
The song mimic a ritual in the woods as they evoke all this spirits of all the ancestors and energies connection with nature.
| LYRICS IN ENGLISH
Run fly free endless
Live, dream and laugh until the end
Dreams are not dreams here
And the magic is alive like this
Women who run with the wolves
Women who lull their treasures
And the moon lights the way
And magic draws destiny
Howl at the moon like this
Run fly free endless
Women who run with the wolves
Women who lull their treasures

WEEK 6: WELCOME TO SALEM
Bashiri Moonchild Sanelly 2:11+
This week, Tess Ticular-Torshun assigned us a different form of magic to find a song that relates to it. I was assigned divination. Divination, or "to be inspired by a god," is the attempt to gain insight into a question or situation by way of an occultic, standardized process or ritual. Used in various forms throughout history, diviners ascertain their interpretations of how a querent should proceed by reading signs, events, or omens, or through alleged contact with a supernatural agency. Communicating with God through prayer may in some cases be considered divination; both are open, typically two-way conversations with God. Divination can be seen as a systematic method with which to organize what appear to be disjointed, random facets of existence such that they provide insight into a problem at hand. If a distinction is to be made between divination and fortune-telling, divination has a more formal or ritualistic element and often contains a more social character, usually in a religious context, as seen in traditional African medicine. Fortune-telling, on the other hand, is a more everyday practice for personal purposes.
Moonchild Sanelly was supposed to come here in the first week, but as Ongina said in her entrance in RPDR All Stars 5, "Sorry, I was stuck in traffic." Apparently, she got lost in Khartoum's traffic before her flight to the HMH stage. But hey, better late than never am I right?
Sanelisiwe Twisha, better known by her stage name Moonchild Sanelly, is a 33 year-old singer born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, but has been based in Durban, South Africa since 2005. A member of the Xhosa peoples, she began her career at the Durban University of Technology, focusing on poetry and hip hop, in 2006. She featured regularly on a weekend show on Gagasi FM, called Poetry with King Siso. Red Bull discovered her music through an EP she was featured on with DJ Shimza, which was eventually a part of the Soul Candi album. In 2019, Sanelly was featured on Beyonce's The Lion King: The Gift album in the song "My Power" along with Busiswa and Nija. Towards the end of 2019, she dropped her 4 tracks mini album project which she named Nude EP. She made a notable contribution on Our Culture, first track off Zingah's 2020 album. In 2020, she was also featured on JazziDisciples album, 0303 in the song "Askies" and later in "With Love to an Ex", from Gorillaz' seventh studio album Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez. With her trademark blue afro, she has become an absolute menace in the South African music scene, due in part to the uniqueness of her own genre, "Future Ghetto Punk" (a masterful fusion of gqom-style dance and punk), but also the fact that she is a sex icon and unafraid to flaunt her appeal and she gives out sex advice on Valentine's day over her social media accounts.
"Bashiri" is the 8th solo single released by Moonchild Sanelly. Bashiri is a song that isn't directly about, but is heavily implied to be a drag on the Malawi-born, South Africa-based preacher Shepherd Bushiri, who was born to a Malawian father and a Zambian mother. Bushiri's church has been described as a cult. His followers call him Papa. They believe that Bushiri can fix any problem an individual is facing. He ammased a massive fortune by scamming people by charging an outrageous amount of money for consultations, where he lead them in prayer and tried to get his followers to endure suffering in order to make it to heaven. He employes various forms of divination in order to profit immensly. He has been so successful in this corrupt manner of scamming his followers that he was recently arrested for fraud and money laundering, causing a rift in the relations between Malawi and South Africa.
"He was cheating, I persevered
He left me, I prayed for him
He came back, I called the pastor
He apologised, we put him in the sea"
The song shows how Sanelisiwe was cheated on my her boyfriend, and as such she took him to Bashiri, and he was transformed into the man Sanelisiwe wanted him to be. However, her boyfriend was entrapped by the message of Bashiri. His divinitation lead him to become entralled by his sermons, and he became trapped by his message. She eventually got fed up with his continuous cheating, and so she complained to Bashiri. He spoke to God, and eventually they set him off to sea, ridding him of his past. He eventually came back, but the divination of Bashiri kept this man in the clutches of him and his iron grip. Sanelisiwe made this after hearing about the actions of Bushiri from a former member of his church. This song, while it sounds like the average gqom track that is put out en-masse from Durban, showcases a side of Southern Africa through a divinational lens that isn't ever truely seen in any form of media.

SHIVA KINDETT EPISODE 6 • Welcome to Salem Necromancy
Gravedigger MXMS 2:27+
"Necromancy is the practice of magic involving communication with the dead – either by summoning their spirits as apparitions, visions or raising them bodily – for the purpose of divination, imparting the means to foretell future events, discover hidden knowledge, to bring someone back from the dead, or to use the dead as a weapon. Sometimes referred to as "Death Magic", the term may also sometimes be used in a more general sense to refer to black magic or witchcraft."
<<< I dig you... I dig you up >>>
I have chosen "Gravedigger" by MXMS for the "Death Magic"; Necromancy. The song talks about vengeance of a previous event by murder. The person makes themselves the subject of the Death Magic by using the murdered body to bring themselves back to life, even after being killed, as described in the first verse and the afterchorus. Using this magic, the person hereby makes themselves immortal, as repeated several times throughout the song. The subject also uses this type of magic violently and has the abilities to control their enemy past their physical existence ("You're going on a devil dance").
Lyrics
I think its a good idea if you stay the fuck away from me
I'm a gravedigger I'm a gravedigger Imma Imma gravedigger
Six deep swim with fish floating on the river You're going on a devil dance do the Macarena black on my eyes and they cold as a cadaver I’m immortal motherfucker can't see me in the mirror
Crown on my head and the thorns on my mind Blade in the flesh and you drinkin' my wine I kiss you, disappear you, and I keep it a secret... I know you wanna fuck me and you'll never forget it
Gravedigger
I'm a gravedigger
on site
I dig you... I dig you up
Hunk in the trunk there's an amber alert pull behind the mausoleum in the back of the church I’m immortal motherfucker and I hang in a cave I'm the girl your fucking over etchin' your name and your days
Everybody wants pretty girls they say nobody knows pretty girls make graves
Got you on a skewer so you crackle and pop I’m not gonna stop till the box drops
I’m a gravedigger Imma Imma gravedigger Imma Imma gravedigger

WEEK 6: WELCOME TO SALEM ILLUSIONS
After winning last weeks challenge, Reina De Los Muertos, I had to assign roles for this challenge and decided to assign myself with the magic type of Illusion. After researching the definition from various sources here is what I've concluded. The magic of illusions involves the change of appearance of something, which is through the distortion of senses and consequently, changes an individuals perception of reality. I have decided to select the song ...
"ILLUSIONS" (by Sundara Karma)
I've decided to choose this song, as it discusses the long lasting impacts of this magic, as the song discusses about their addiction to the need of illusions and it highlights the horrors faced by these illusions, as it detriments their wellbeing; negatively affecting their mental health and morality. This is symbolised within the following lyrics:
Ooh, I think illusions run my life I need illusions all the time Grant you illusions from our mind (Chorus)
Paradise came to me on the sofa and a TV screen I haven't bathed since And I've escaped my own morality Holding up a heavy front Our little arms have taken on too much And now we're seething But too depressed to leave our soapy sheets (Verse 2)
Hence, this song fits with the notion of illusions, as it shows how the media creates these illusions, where it disconnects the normative perceptions of reality; thus, changing its appearance. These ideas are also reinforced by Marxist perceptions of the media, as it is a new form of the 'opium of the people', as the original 'opium', religion, is less significant in society compared to the media. Where the media uses illusions to distract working-class people from their exploitation by the ruling class, creating a false consciousness. Therefore, illusions can be used to take advantage certain groups and consequently, showing how illusions can make people ignore the harsh realities in society. However, there is a paradox, as the song reinforces illusions are addictive and has negative impacts on a person's wellbeing
LYRICS
Yes, but what should I do?
Walking through the abattoir Disconnected from who we are We don't see it There’s an animal inside of us Stocking up on dynamite No more people left in our sight Just give us something So we can kill and watch our hearts adjust
It's all the same thing It's all non-duality It’s all the same thing We're all the same thing
Ooh, I think illusions run my life I need illusions all the time Grant you illusions from our mind
Paradise came to me on the sofa and a TV screen I haven't bathed since And I've escaped my own morality Holding up a heavy front Our little arms have taken on too much And now we're seething But too depressed to leave our soapy sheets
It's all the same thing It's all non-duality It's all the same thing We’re all the same thing
Ooh, I think illusions run my life I need illusions all the time Grant you illusions from our mind
Ooh, I think illusions run my life I need illusions all the time Grant you illusions from our mind

WEEK 6: WELCOME TO SALEM
Incantation Moses Sumney
When the types of magic were revealed, I knew right away I wanted Enchantment, so huge thanks to Tess for letting me have it! The initial reason I wanted this type of magic was that I had a few songs in mind that I thought would really fit this category. However, listening to them multiple times, I realized it might not be what this assignment is looking for. And so, I went searching.
I realized that "Enchantment" is a very open-ended category. At first, I gravitated to the concept of putting something/someone under a spell, which was what the Dungeons & Dragons description had put it. However, the dictionary definitions I've read broadened my horizons. The Merriam-Webster dictionary simply defined enchantment as "a magic spell." I perused through words that are similar/related to "enchantment," and saw "incantation," which is defined as "a use of spells or verbal charms spoken or sung as a part of a ritual of magic" by Merriam-Webster, very much in the realm of "enchantment."
Enter Moses Sumney. The types of songs I tried to approach beforehand had been of the symphonic kind. However, upon hearing Sumney's track "Incantation" for the first time, I was enthralled. This minimally produced track carried that magical quality I had been looking for, but it's sonically so unique from what you'd traditionally associate with magic. Let's put this track into context. The Hebrew lyrics is from "an obscure Jewish folk incantation, wrapped in the mist of Kabbalic mysticism, sometimes included in קריאת שמע על מיטה, the nightly recitation of the Hear O Israel prayers in bed just before sleep, calling on God and his angels to protect the supplicant." (Source) This is a prayer asking God and the Four Archangels (Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, Rafael) for their protection.
"On my right Michael, on my left Gabriel, before me Uriel, behind me Raphael, and above my head the spirit of God"
In the perspective of this challenge, this is a self-enchantment, the enchanter protecting themselves during their sleep. Sumney's "Incantation" is a spiritual track that makes reference to Abrahamic religion, but its source material of Jewish mysticism really goes in on that magic aspect I didn't realize it carried until I stumbled and analyzed upon it. Add to that his chilling falsetto vocals which brings out that gripping rawness. In a way, hearing this song puts me on another definition of enchanted: "made to feel delightfully pleased or charmed."
This is certainly a very unique interpretation for what I had been assigned, but I knew I could not dismiss this captivating track. I invoke a prayer to God and his angels to protect me from the bottom.

WEEK 6: WELCOME TO SALEM
Manifesting Destiny Zola Jesus
This week, I was assigned the type of magic named "conjuration" by miss Tess Ticular-Torshun. Conjuration spells involve the transportation of objects and creatures from one location to another, conjuring manifestations of creatures, energy or objects and object creation.
From my point of view, I can heavily connect conjuration spells with the state of missing/wanting to be with someone since it appears to be that kind of spell that focuses on instantaneous transportation. In my chosen song, "Manifest Destiny" by Zola Jesus, the singer appears to be very depended on a certain person of her life that isn't with her. Thus, she appears to be in despair and wants to find ways to get closer to the person she is missing.
<<I only know one place where I have to be And it's gotta be with you It's gotta be with you I'm on my way now I'm on my way now>>
As suggested by the title, Zola is essentially manifesting a destiny that might as well be impossible. However, this is what magic is all about: making the impossible actually happen.
<<I will find you, oh I will find you So you gotta help me out You gotta help me out>>
Lyrics:
I don't have a reason to go back home So what am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to do? I only know one place where I have to be And it's gotta be with you It's gotta be with you I'm on my way now I'm on my way now So you gotta help me out You gotta help me out You gotta make it out for me You gotta make it out for me
How could we survive? Yeah just think about Think about the kids Just let your spear arrive Yeah don't worry about Don't worry about the rest
There is a fire that burns on my tongue So what can I ever do? What can I ever do? I see the calm that you feel and your love And I wanna feel it too I wanna feel it too I will find you, oh I will find you So you gotta help me out You gotta help me out You gotta make it out for me You gotta make it out for me Oh ooh
How could we survive? Yeah just think about Think about the kids Just let your spear arrive Yeah don't worry about Don't worry about the rest
How could we survive? Yeah just think about Think about the kids Just let your spear arrive Yeah don't worry about Don't worry about the rest

WEEK 6: WELCOME TO SALEM
La Serpiente La Chica
La Chica is a music project created by Franco-Venezuelan singer songwriter Sophie Fustec. If magic realism had a soundtrack this could be it: with her hypnotic vocals, Debussy-inspired piano and adept sampling of Latin American percussion she builds "a collage" of colours and moods to achieve a state of trance. Just ahead of the release of her debut album Cambio (Change) she talks to Alison Hird about being saved by music and - trying, however humbly, to do the same for people suffering in Venezuela.
Which of the two do I want to be if I can choose? Do you think gender defines my being? Define my being The kingdom of dusk has already begun I change my skin and I see the world upside down The world upside down
"Transmutation" is by the definition, the action of changing or the state of being changed into another form. And, in witchcraft, transmutation is a symbol “per se” result of the process of changing entities, acquiring the new entity the meaning of the symbolism to pretend represent. The transmutation is defined as the action and effect of transmute and transmutation, simply as convert.
The transmutation school of magic specializes in magic that alters physical reality. It consists of spells that change the physical properties of some creature, thing, or condition. The school was previously known as alteration. A witch who specialized in transmutation is known as a transmuter. Alteration spells cause a change in the properties of some already existing thing. This is accomplished by magical energy channeled through the witch.
In the song "La Serpiente" by La Chica, a transformation to a snake creature is described. "I dedicate it to those who have experienced a transformation, whatever it may be. I send the energies of this song, which is about gender, infinite cycle and skin change, to my brother" says La Chica.
He knows more than I do what happens on my skin When the eye opens, what can I see Oh the energy level already increased I travel within, I am immortality
By these lyrics, we understand that a woman, or a man, is able to turn into a snake to travel through infinity and becomes immortal thanks to their ability. Transmutation, which is the power to change the matter of anything, can be implemented into this song by predicting that this "creature" is able to do this while both being a normal human and a superficial creature. When they are covered with snake skin, they see the world upside down, they are a whole new personality, therefore, transformed in some sort of way.
Do you think gender defines my being? Define my being The kingdom of dusk has already begun I change my skin and see the world upside down
Finally, La Chica shows us that their gender isn't their defining feature. Because, she is not influenced by it and prefers not to be seen as that one quality, because they can change their features any time to become a snake, metaphorically, literally, who knows?
LYRICS (translated to English)
He knows more than I do what happens on my skin When the eye opens, what can I see What i can see Oh the energy level already increased I travel within, I am immortality Immortality Who wants to be a snake? Who wants to be a snake? Tell me I'm going Talk to me, I want you to sing to me Tell me I'm going Open me Tell me I'm going Open me up, I want you to sing to me Tell me I'm going Open up Which of the two do I want to be if I can choose? Do you think gender defines my being? Define my being The kingdom of dusk has already begun I change my skin and I see the world upside down The world upside down Who wants to be a snake? Who wants to be a snake? Open it, open it, open it Open it, open it, open it

WEEK 6: WELCOME TO SALEM
Sue Me Björk
For this week's challenge, my good sister Testis assigned me the school of abjuration!
As explained in the quote above, this school of magic focuses on spells aimed at protecting people. Right as I read the deifnion, I had a Eureka moment! I knew I had the perfect song for this! Without further ado, I would like to present to you the song 'Sue Me' off of Björk's 9th album 'Utopia'. I'm not gonna bother introducing Björk as you all know who she is!
But anyway, the lyrics of the song are very personal to her, as well as her daughter. She sings about the custody battle between her and her ex-partner Matthew Barney. The motherly instict is waken up. She will do everything to protect the most precious thing in her life - her daughter.
Sue me, sue me, sue me all you want I won't denounce her origin Sue me, sue me, sue me all you want I won't denounce our origin
LYRICS
My tear duct clogged My left eye broken Medicate with warm compress Extract hardened tears
Sue me, sue me, sue me all you want I won't denounce her origin Sue me, sue me, sue me all you want I won't denounce our origin
I've ducked and dived Like the mother in Salomon's Tale To spare our girl I won't let her get cut in half ever But it's time to teach her some dignity
Sue me, sue me, sue me all you want I won't denounce our origin Sue me, sue me, sue me, sue me I won't, I won't denounce our origin No, I won't
He took it from his father Who took it from his father Who took it from his father Let's break this curse So it won't fall on our daughter And her daughter And her daughter Won't let this sink into her DNA
Sue me, sue me, sue me, sue me all you want I won't let you denounce our origin Sue me, sue me, sue me all you want Denounce our origin, no, I won't
Can't take her suffer It's so unfair The sins of the fathers They just fucked it all up We had the best family We had it all We had it all in our hands He just pulled us through the wringer Narcissistic
