We are sharing 5 songs per post a few times a week that have been selected for United States of Song 2022!The person/people who submitted the artist or song will be listed with each entry. The state entries are being announced in random order; the running order itself will be announced either at the end of this month or early April. Each song comes with a paragraph or so about the artist, their song, and their style of music. Please let me know if any of the videos below are blocked. South Dakota ROMAN - "Gone" Song submitted by Pablo It's time to bring some strong-ass rock and roll into this contest! Roman James and his band originate from the Black Hills of South Dakota and while there isn't a ton of information online about them, they are active on their YouTube channel and have even performed with USoS alum, such as Blacklite District. It's a bit emotive, a bit of a post-realization type song. Illinois Kit Major - "Solo Disco" Artist suggestion by uhsting One of Illinois' best results came from an electropop artist (who then went to apply for NMGP, btw) so, don't mess with a successful formula? From her website: "Influenced by pop culture and style, Major uses elements of classic pop and rock. Her songs are expressive and playful with lyrics that romanticize everyday life. She has used her platform to promote a message of love and acceptance to those who are outcasts of society." Minnesota
Hippo Campus - "Semi Pro" Artist suggested by Gregory (inactive) and Derek There are always a few instances per year where two people suggest the same song or artist. Hippo Campus have been on my mind for many years, but their song releases never seemed to line up with the contest - until now. They are an indie rock group from St Paul (*cough* and are better than Yam Haus *cough*) and released their third studio album at the beginning of February. The song was written primarily by band members Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker. “Semi-Pro” discusses fame, failing careers, and old dreams. Indiana Durand Jones & The Indications - "Witchoo" Submitted by Gregory (inactive) We head from the baseball field of indie rock to full-on disco! If you dig the Slovenian entry for ESC this year, then this might be the entry for you in USoS. Durand Jones (a Louisiana native) developed a connection in songwriting and old soul music with his to-be band members while at Indiana University. Honestly, their music sounds and feels like it was ripped right out of 1976, and it's such a vibe. Georgia Eric Nam - "I Don't Know You Anymore" Song submitted by Chante™ Born and raised in Atlanta, Eric Nam's music features R&B and EDM sounds - as well as K-Pop, as he is an established musician in the Korean scene since the mid-2010s. His second full album, "There And Back Again", will be released this year. (Also I feel like I owe Chante a bit after vetoing aleXa for Oklahoma last year, ASC made a fool of me)
That's all we got for today! Stay tuned to this thread for future song choices for the other states, including our first returning artist of the season... And don't forget to vote for the currently ongoing state selections! There's not much time left....

Also, congratulations on many of you for posting your state selection entries! Each of you have very competitive entries, and we are very excited for them. Best of luck to Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Colorado! Montana Stephanie Quayle - "We Buy Gold" Artist submitted by Derek Announcing our first official returnee of 2022! (Yes, NC beat us to it, but let me dream for a moment!) Before Montana placed 2nd in the 2018 edition, Stephanie Quayle's 21st place in 2017 was the first qualification Montana had into the Final. Five years later, Quayle returns with her country style, bringing "We Buy Gold" into the spotlight. The song is about the complications of marriage and divorce (This video being presented by 'HitchSwitch', is a name-change service to help people legally change their name after a marriage or divorce... an odd tie-in.) North Dakota The Gina Powers Band - "How's This Go" Song found by Gregory (inactive) North Dakotan entries can be a challenge to find, and we cannot forever rely on Tigirlily! So here from Fargo are The Gina Powers Band, led by Gina herself, and the piano-laden ballad "How's This Go?" They consider themselves an alternative country / Americana band, but their website claims they have "a sound all its own, a true songwriting band, each individual musician shares in the creative process. Gina is the primary songwriter & brings new tunes to the band which they work together to create the final piece." Wyoming
Ian Munsick - "She Was Right" Song submitted by Pablo We are in the midst of the American Song Contest, which may make finding some unique singers and songwriters easier in the upcoming editions. While we were all new boot goofin' in the first episode, Wyoming's jury member Ian Munsick was making his mind up on who should proceed to the semifinals. Munsick is an artist himself, a bit less crazy than Ryan Charles, but still with an eclectic country sound mixed with just enough pop to give Wyoming a shot at qualification - hopefully for the first time ever? Connecticut Natalie Carr - "Scraped Knees" Submitted by Derek Let's get away from the Mountain timezone for a moment, and head over to the Atlantic Northeast! Natalie Carr grew up in Stamford, which is just outside of New York City. Later she moved to Charlotte, North Carolina - and her low-fi sounds reflect all these changes in her life. Queen City Nerve describes it as, "synths shimmering over mid-tempo rhythms. Carr’s lush vocals sooth and caress, but a close listen to the lyrics reveal vulnerability and yearning, plus a determination to embrace life’s hard-won lessons." Delaware Jovon Newman & Neillyn Firpo - "Sola" Song found by Gregory (inactive) We finish off this batch of songs with something a bit unexpected, maybe? How about a guy and a gal from Newark - one who is a real estate saleswoman by day, and the other a singer-songwriter whose latest single is country - singing a Spanish/English song with R&B and latino flair? That's what this sea-bound state is bringing y'all this year. The song isn't going to bring you that big drop, but it's beyond unique for this state and I hope you all enjoy it.
That's all we got for today! Stay tuned to this thread for future song choices for the other states and territories! We still have about 25 left...

The state entries are being announced in random order; the running order itself will be announced either at the end of this month or early April. Each song comes with a paragraph or so about the artist, their song, and their style of music. Please let me know if any of the videos below are blocked. I'm behind on posting... @_@ Mississippi Maty Noyes - "California Palms" Artist suggested by Pablo Hailing from Corinth, Maty (pronounced like Mattie), she rose to prominence after being featured on Kgyo's "Stay" in 2016, which reached #106 - barely missing the Hot 100. Five years on, she's trying to break through as a soloist. At age 16 she convinced her parents to let her move to Nashville to pursue music. Ya hear that, guys? Just skip high school and move to the city of your dreams! It's just that easy... @_@ Nebraska Marcey Yates & XOBOI - "Shittie Dae" Song found by Gregory (inactive) While researching Kentuckian music, trying to find something good - and this is no joke - I somehow ended up finding this unexpected hip-hop duo from north Omaha instead. The two are involved in several different collectives, including the Raleigh Science Project, which is named after Yates' son (not the NC city.) He helped to establish the New Generation Music Festival, which allowed artists like ASC's Jocelyn land a spot on Showtime At The Apollo in 2018. The rest is history for her; now let's give Marcey & XOBOI some love. South Carolina
Kelechi - "Dance In The Mirror" Song submitted by DerekHailing from Orangeburg, Kelechi is described as 'a Nigerian-American vintage romance pop magician' - and we can see why. The song comes from a breakup of his, stating that "sometimes relationships don't work out. And sometimes we have to figure out how to move past those feelings and emotions." The "winding road to recovery" is shared — walls down — as we follow Kelechi to self-love and acceptance. Alaska Ava Earl - "Springtime" Song submitted by Derek & Pablo Out of the three artists submitted for Alaska, two of them were submitted by two different people! The other option I couldn't really get a SFW 25-second clip from any of their choruses so we are embracing the seasons with 19-year old Ava Earl (no relation to Kate!) Last year, shortly before the release of this video, Ava lost most of the hearing from her left ear, which has impacted her music in countless ways. Her fourth album, "The Roses," finds inspirations from Ingrid Michaelson, Fiona Apple, and Taylor Swift. If those artists are your vibe, then maybe this song is for you. Maryland Lyn Lapid - "Infinite" Song submitted by uhstingLast, but not least, we join up with Lyn Lapid, a Filipino American from Baltimore who gained fame in 2019 via TikTok for "Producer Man". Her path to creating music is an independent one, having turned down opportunities to collaborate on songs with producers because it wouldn't be music she enjoyed making. Speaking about her music, she says, "I want you to hear the messages I put out in my music. I’m talking about different things, whether it’s my experiences or mental illness. I hope you can really tune into the lyrics and what I’m trying to say.”

We are sharing 5 songs per post a few times a week that have been selected for United States of Song 2022!The person/people who submitted the artist or song will be listed with each entry. We have about 20 left, let's crank them out as quick as we can! Alabama St. Paul & The Broken Bones - "The Last Dance" Song suggested by Derek Depending on which circles of music you delve into, you may've heard of this band. They are big on the alternative scene, but this is a rather upbeat departure from all that. "The Last Dance" will get your feet tapping. It's time to go to the disco, y'all! Wisconsin You Win!!! - "Painmonger" Song submitted by Gregory (inactive) I floated around several different options for my home state, and landed on this, mostly because it was a bit quirky. "You Win!!!" considers themselves a 'trip-hop/dark-pop project hailing from Milwaukee' comprised of longtime collaborators Amanda Huff and producer This Random Machine. The pair initially bonded over electronic music, video games, fantasy lore and an instant artistic chemistry. Their sound is a dynamic blend of thunderous arrangements, playful vocals and sharp lyrics. District of Columbia
KAMAUU - "Transparency" Song submitted by Pablo So, this song I've been sitting on for about a month - it's not typical for this contest, very avant-garde, and KAMAUU's voice is extremely unique. But over time it has grown on me. KAMAUU was born in DC and grew up just outside. His music varies between hip-hop, funk, rap, and R&B, but this admittedly experimental sound and song tells more of a personal story. Ethnically West African, you'll see elements of his heritage come out in his music, too. New Jersey Ambar Lucid - "Get Lost In The Music" Song submitted by Derek This song opens up with a retro-sleazy vibe that actually sounds... really New Jersian! Ambar, who is ethnically Dominican and Mexican, lived between New Jersey and the Dominican Republic until settling in outer NYC when she was 8. Many of her songs include lyrics partially or wholly in Spanish, as well. She cites Alice Phoebe Lou, Willow Smith, and Kali Uchis as inspirations for her songwriting. Iowa Sarah Darling - "Song Still Gets Me" Artist recommendation from Tufkai Iowa was one of the states we didn't get any suggestions for, and it was actually a struggle to find anything competitive. So when that happens, I tap back into our past recommendations for ideas, and this artist was suggested several years ago. A country artist from Des Moines, Darling had one semi-major hit back in 2013 with "Home To Me", but has never gotten close since. While her roots are in country, this song is admittedly more pop-country, but its a very enjoyable listen.

We are sharing 5 songs per post a few times a week that have been selected for United States of Song 2022!The person/people who submitted the artist or song will be listed with each entry. We have about 15 left, let's crank them out as quick as we can! Missouri Slayyyter - "Troubled Paradise" Song suggested by Derek We start this week with an absolute banger, most reminiscent of Lady Gaga and "Stupid Love"... but in a jungle? Originally from St. Louis, and having grown up in the town of Kirkwood, Slayyyter knew she wanted to be a musician and dropped out of university to pursue her goals. She linked up with an electronic artist through Twitter and began releasing her music through Soundcloud, where she gained notoriety. According to her, the phrase 'troubled paradise' comes from how she herself described a mental battle with depression -- but despite the dark and twisted lyrics, she wanted people to dance! Massachusetts Frances Forever - "Paranoia Party" Song found by Gregory (inactive) Frances Garrett is originally from Baltimore but moved to Boston to study music at the Berklee College - one of the most famous in America. Several ESC artists have studied here, too! "Paranoia Party" revamps their experiences at an unfamiliar college party into a darkly charming affair that gets weirder as they move through the rooms of memory. There’s a bit of waltzy charm to the song that gets jilted and jagged in a space full of living, loving, and beer-soaked couches. Arkansas
Census - "TILTS" Song submitted by Derek Up to this point we haven't had a lot of relentless rock songs, so we need to change that - and while Arkansas may not be the first place you think of, it certainly is far from the last. Hailing from Jessieville, Census (not 'The Census') consider their music 'heavy, alternative' metal, but this sound has developed over several years into a more polished production. Lead singer Ben Carey's vocals really take off during the bridge - and there are some f-bombs in this (the rules have been loosened for 2022) - but I know y'all can handle it. U.S. Virgin Islands Adam O x Marvelus - "Fresh Bless" Song submitted by Chante™ Although this song was submitted in late 2020, its remix emerged in early 2021, and its music video dropped in January 2022, so if you accept the difference in time... well, we're left shrugging our shoulders. The second-ever Virgin Islander to represent on the USoS stage is Adam O, a native of St. Croix; he teams up with rapper and reggae artist Marvelus, who produced the song. This is soca music at its roots, but it brings an unforgiving and edgy atmosphere to the dancefloor. I think you'll be impressed with this one. N. Mariana Islands Walter A. Manglona - "Too Late" Song discovered by Gregory (inactive) And YES! We can confirm the debut of the last remaining territory yet to be featured in USoS - the Northern Mariana Islands! If ASC can do it, why not us? What you may not have expected from this debut, however, is the genre of music that is coming from this smallest of territories. Walter Manglona is from Rota island - and while he mostly hangs out with his homies making rap, rhythmic, or chamorro music 99% of the time... for *some* reason... he decided 'why not try country?' And I couldn't resist choosing it. It'll be the only opportunity of our lives, like for real! He even throws in some references to hurricanes, which is cool. What do you think?
That's all we got for today! Stay tuned to this thread for future song choices for the other states and territories! We have about 8 left!

Semifinals Running Order The Portland 2022 semifinals are quickly approaching! Only a few more songs are left to announce - but before we get to that, we ought to get the running order out there. To determine the order, all states and territories that will participate this year were listed and then randomized with a website (NOT random.org, lol.) Just like last year, 13 songs will qualify from each semifinal and join Oregon in the Final Round. Unlike ESC, the order for USoS is truly random -- if we get seven ballads in a row, then so be it! Starting off with Semifinal 1, they were in spot 4 last year, but this year Maine will open the contest. Who will they be represented by? You'll find out soon... and we close SF1 out with (now Grammy award-winning artist) Jon Batiste and Louisiana. Semifinal 2 contains one additional song. It opens with Louisiana's neighbor, Mississippi, and closes with our user-submitted entry from Virginia! Apologies to those of you in SF2 who have to battle it out with one extra song! There's no definite date for when we open up SF1 voting, but you can follow any news and updates by watching the posts in this thread. Without further ado, here's this year's semifinals running order: Semifinal 1: 1. Maine 2. Pennsylvania 3. Kentucky 4. Michigan 5. Delaware 6. Ohio 7. American Samoa 8. Nebraska 9. Illinois 10. Washington 11. Oklahoma 12. Georgia 13. Missouri 14. Wyoming 15. Hawaii Colorado 16. Kansas 17. South Carolina 18. Wisconsin 19. Texas 20. Puerto Rico 21. Utah 22. Iowa 23. US Virgin Islands 24. Guam 25. New Hampshire 26. Indiana 27. Louisiana Semifinal 2: 1. Mississippi 2. Nevada 3. New York 4. North Carolina 5. Arkansas 6. Montana 7. Minnesota 8. Maryland 9. North Dakota 10. Florida 11. Idaho 12. District of Columbia 13. South Dakota 14. West Virginia 15. Colorado Hawaii 16. Arizona 17. N. Mariana Islands 18. California 19. New Jersey 20. Tennessee 21. Alabama 22. Vermont 23. New Mexico 24. Connecticut 25. Alaska 26. Massachusetts 27. Rhode Island 28. Virginia ---- Per tradition, we also shall determine the running order placement for Oregon in the Final Round today. We used Google's freely available random number generator, and have determined that Oregon's entry will be in slot 15. Anyway, which states are slated for a good result? Which ones are ultimately doomed? Let us know in the comments below. Stay tuned for the final song announcements!

We are sharing 5 songs per post a few times a week that have been selected for United States of Song 2022!The person/people who submitted the artist or song will be listed with each entry. We have 8 left, so let's crank them out half of them tonight! Oklahoma Samantha Crain - "Bloomsday" Song found by Gregory (inactive) Oklahoma has been giving me a hard time behind the scenes, until a fantastic resource provided that much-needed insight into the best of the best from the Sooner State. Samantha is a native Choctaw singer. In fact, one of the songs I debated choosing from her, "When We Remain," is sung entirely in Choctaw - but it could be read as vaguely political, so I settled for her most popular song. In "Bloomsday" Crain says the song 'offers a light when there is darkness'. She has toured with former 50SS contestant Parker Millsap, as well as Brandi Carlile and Neutral Milk Hotel. Pennsylvania Concrete Castles - "Just A Friend" Song found by Derek We had a lot of submissions for Pennsylvania, and what was common amongst all of them was the strong sense of rock music. Some songs I literally could not send; others were a bit 'too' hard. Hailing from Erie, the band changed their name and debuted with this single. According to the band, the song is about "having trust issues and making a problem out of something before it even begins. It’s being skeptical about a partner and not having enough trust to let them have friends or interact with anyone if it isn’t you. Being so scared that there are other people they may think are better than you." West Virginia
Sierra Ferrell - "The Sea" Song submitted by Gregory (inactive) Here's why it's important to verify entries before they get posted: 7until yesterday, a cute pop-rap song called "Eventually" by Aristotle Jones & George Collins was the entry slated for West Virginia. The problem? There are *two* artists named Aristotle Jones... and the one who sang Eventually came from Boston. Oops! So instead, how about we really throw something atypical into the mix? The best way to describe Sierra Ferrell's sound is a blend of americana, bluegrass, jazz, and swing music. It'll be interesting to see how the jurors react to it! Maine American Teeth - "Tongue" Song submitted by Pablo Lastly, Maine are opening the first semifinal, this is the song everyone will be introduced to the contest with: a throwback to the mid-2000s of emo pop-rock, ska, and punk. Or, as lead singer Elijah Noll describes: anti-pop. Maybe a little Machine Gun Kelly? Not particularly in this song, but in other songs he's got. "Tongue" is a cheeky tune about the looks you give someone you're interested in! I'm sorry to Derek... Kalie Shorr does deserve to be in the contest every year.
That's all we got for today! The final post of songs will come by the end of the week. We have Guam, Kentucky, Nevada, and the host state Oregon left to announce.

UPDATE - May 1st, 2022Hey everyone. Just some quick updates as we get close to starting Semifinal 1. - The Calendar has been updated. For Semifinal 1, we want to open voting as soon as possible in May. Semifinal 2 will be in June. The hard, rock-solid deadline to open voting is May 15, and it will last 3-4 weeks. Watch your notifications for announcements. - After discussing with the USoS committee, the Californian selection winner will indeed participate. TL;DR, the winning entry broke one of the rules of the contest, but the rule was worded poorly. Going forward, all members of the act, group, or band must be age 14 or older. - Although its music video came out last year, the Vermont entry was discovered to be released in 2014, which is against contest rules. (If it was 2019 or 2020, maybe it wouldn't matter... but yeah, the song is older than the contest itself lol). The entry will be replaced with a new song, to be posted shortly. - The representative for Colorado has requested to participate in Semifinal 1, due to timing conflicts. They have been drawn into slot 15, so they will switch spots with the 15th song in Semifinal 1, which is Hawaii. - If you want a replacement video for a song, please get it to me no later than May 7. - After multiple attempts, the Committee have been unable to get a response from the Nevadan representative. Thus, we will choose an entry on their behalf. I'm pretty disappointed about this, since they are clearly active on the forum. But what can I do... That's all for now. The final three four songs (GU, KY, NV, VT) will be posted very soon. --------
