North Carolina State Selection 2022
Welcome to the 2022 North Carolina state selection!
Six acts are competing for the chance to represent North Carolina in USoS 2022. Continue reading below for more information on the songs and artists. (Click here to access a YouTube playlist.)
1. Christina Taylor - I Got That From You
Born in Florida and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, Christina Taylor used to make frequent 6-hour road trips to Nashville for writing and recording sessions, before moving there later in her career. She says “I Got That From You” is about “how we get a lot of our character traits and looks from our family, but we can also be molded into the people we are through the things we go through and experience, including relationships gone bad.”
2. Young Mister - Still Young
Young Mister is the alias of Steven Fiore, a singer-songwriter from Tryon, North Carolina. He spent a number of years as a songwriter for Universal Music Publishing Group before shifting his focus toward releasing his own music. He says “Still Young” is a tribute to his wife and “a song about how life opens up when you have the courage to chase it.”
3. Curtis Waters - Conceited
If you were on TikTok at all in 2020, there’s a good chance you’ve heard Curtis Waters’ song “Stunnin’,” which became a viral hit on the platform. Waters was born in Nepal but has lived in several different countries; he moved with his family to Cary, North Carolina in 2017. He describes “Conceited” as “fun, upbeat, and a little cheesy,” and says the lyrics are “supposed to be a bit ironic.”
4. The Dryes - Dolly Would
The Dryes are Katelyn and Derek Drye, a husband and wife country duo based in Nashville but originally from Winston-Salem and Thomasville, North Carolina, respectively. “Dolly Would” is a tribute to Dolly Parton, and Katelyn Drye calls it “an anthem for women and men who have worked their tails off for the dreams they have.”
5. Paige King Johnson - Baby Don't
Paige King Johnson was born and raised in the small town of Angier, North Carolina and won for Female Artist of the Year and Emerging New Artist at last year’s Carolina Country Music Awards. “Baby Don’t,” which Johnson describes as “fun and flirty,” was written by the Grammy Award-winning songwriting team of Lori McKenna, Liz Rose and Hillary Lindsey.
6. Delta Rae - No One Will Miss Me
USoS veterans Delta Rae are back again, looking to represent North Carolina for a third time. According to the band, “No One Will Miss Me” was “written during a period of serious depression” for band member Eric Hölljes, and is “the voice of despair and pain colliding with the hopeful rhythms of moving forward.”
Recap Video
The deadline to vote is March 27, 2022. I'll abstain from voting in this selection unless the poll ends in a tie, in which case I'll cast a tie-breaking vote. May the best song win!
