NEWS FROM CYPRUS Das zypriotische Fernsehen CyBC plant eine Rückkehr zum Eurovision Song Contest! Die britische Website LGR.co.uk meldet, dass glaubwürdige Quellen eine Bestätigung aus Nikosia in Kürze veröffentlichen werden, sobald das neue Auswahlformat des Senders für den 60. Eurovision Song Contest in Österreich feststeht.
Nach entsprechenden Angaben ist der Vorentscheid ausschließlich zypriotischen Interpreten vorbehalten, die Songwriter dürfen auch aus dem Ausland stammen, sofern sie mit mindestens einem zypriotischen Komponisten im Team arbeiten. Zuletzt nahm Zypern 2013 mit Despina Olympiou und "An me thimase" in Malmö teil, schied jedoch im Semifinale aus. Ansonsten sollen für den geplanten zypriotischen Vorentscheid die gängigen EBU-Regularien gelten, die Drei-Minuten-Regel sowie die Altersbegrenzung auf 16 Jahre.
Zypern nimmt seit 1981 am Eurovision Song Contest teil. In den Anfängen erreichte man u.a. mit Anna Vissi und Hara & Andreas die Top Five, nach Einführung der Halbfinals war Zypern nur 2004, 2010 und 2012 im Finale vertreten.
