Semi-Final 1 Artists & Songs Presentations!01. ALCAZAR("Burning")Alcazar was formed in 1998 with three members, Andreas Lundstedt, Tess Merkel and Annikafiore Kjaergaard. Their first single, Shine On, was successful in Sweden but it was the single, Crying at the Discoteque, that achieved success across Europe. Both singles appeared on their debut album Casino. Later editions of Casino contained a cover of the Human League hit Don't You Want Me, which also was the released as a single. In December 2002, Magnus Carlsson joined the group. The second album Alcazarized was released in Sweden in 2003, it became a big hit and got an international release in 2004. In 2003 Alcazar entered the pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest (Melodifestivalen) with the song Not a Sinner, Nor a Saint, which finished 3rd in the final. The song became a huge hit in Sweden. In the autumn of 2004 Alcazar released This Is The World We Live In. The track samples Diana Ross’ 1980 number one Upside Down and uses lyrics from Genesis’ 1986 single Land of Confusion. The follow-up single was entitled Physical. Alcazar released the album Dancefloor Deluxe in Sweden in August. In 2005 they took part in Melodifestivalen again with the song Alcastar and came third for a second time. In the autumn of 2005 the band decided to take a break. Andreas moved on to musicals and played the lead in Saturday Night Fever and Tess became a poker pro. In July 2007 the band did a one-off performance in London at the legendary night club G-A-Y and invited their friend Lina Hedlund to join them on stage. It all turned out to be a very successful combination and a few months later the "New Alcazar" was formed. In January 2008 their first single We Keep On Rockin‘ was released. Music and lyrics by long time team member Anders Hansson. The single quickly became a hit and only a week after the release the single passed gold status in the sales. In March 2009 the new album Disco Defenders was released in Sweden. On 7 February 2009 Alcazar took part in the Swedish pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Stay the Night. The song came fifth in the final on 14 March and became a big hit in Sweden. In 2010 Alcazar once again competed in Melodifestivalen, with the song Headlines, which unfortunately missed out on the final. Alcazar performed a farewell concert at Stockholm Pride on 6 August 2011 as the members decided to take a break. On 23 February 2013 Alcazar were reunited in Melodifestivalen in Malmö and performed a medley (out of the competition) with the singer Danny Saucedo. On 27 November 2013 it was announced that Alcazar will make a comeback in Melodifestivalen in Örnsköldsvik on 22 February 2014 with the song Blame it on the Disco.
Now it is announced that Alcazar will perform on the Fantasifestivalen stage to present their song "Burning", which will open the first semi-final.02. INGRID OLAVA("Headlines")My first heart-felt encounter with art was reading my first novels as a child, mainly books by Roald Dahl and Astrid Lindgren. I owe them so much regarding development of my empathy and imagination. There were few records in my childhood home, but I repeatedly listened to Elton John and Billy Joel. By the time I was nine I was a fanatic Michael Jackson fan. He still makes me dance. When the hard teens hit, I became aware of the massive amount of art in the world, but never really chose a specific path. I played piano in the christian youth choir, but had also fallen in love with the guys and the jukebox at my local rock bar. Gospel and punk rock. Ballads and beer. I was a big Motorpsycho fan, but took refuge in the comfort of Stina Nordenstam. I fell in love with the piano for good when I found 'Jazz på Svenska' by Jan Johansson. I found Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, Judee Sill and Patti Smith. I was astonished by the songwriting skills of The Beatles and The Beach boys. I felt doors open up inside me when I was presented with classical music by for example Sibelius, Arvo Pärt, Ligeti or Stravinsky. Inspiration and influence is everywhere. The last few years I've had huge experiences encountering japanese anime, listening to countless classic artists like Nina Simone or Bob Dylan, or discovering astonishing talents of our time, like Antony and the Johnsons or the sweet, sweet songwriter Daniel Johnston. I can't really name them all, or draw the lines between me and them in any orderly way. Influence is a never ending river that runs through my life, and I am greatful to all the artists that have left their fingerprints on my heart. Right now I'm writing my third album. More updates coming soon. Please check out the music from my first two albums while I'm making more music! All the best; Ingrid.
Whole Norway keep its fingers crossed for the FF foreign act Ingrid Olava, who will perform 2nd in the first semi-final with her song "Headlines".03. MAGNUS UGGLA("Vild Och Skild")Magnus Uggla, born June 18, 1954 in Stockholm, is a Swedish artist, composer, actor, and occasional radio host known for his satirical lyrics.
Uggla was the lead singer of the hard rock band JUSO (later renamed Alexander Lucas) before going solo in the early 70's. Their influences were Black Sabbath, The Groundhogs and Alice Cooper among others. Uggla's first two glam- and art rock-inspired albums Om Bobbo Viking and Livets teater didn't sell well, the first only about 500 copies in Sweden and Livets teater even less. But his departure from glam rock with the punk and hard rock inspired Va ska man ta livet av sig för när man ändå inte får höra snacket efteråt gained him much popularity and the album sold about 150 000 copies. In the 1970s, several music magazines gave Magnus the name "The Swedish Ian Hunter". In 1979, he was one of the members in Magnus Uggla Band.
Povel Ramel awarded him the Karamelodiktstipendiet in 1991.
Uggla's solo influences includes Karl Gerhard, David Bowie, The Clash, Marc Bolan, Wendy Carlos and Mott the Hoople. In an interview with Aftonbladet, he cited The Clash as the greatest band in the world.
Uggla participated to the fourth semifinal of Melodifestivalen 2007 with the song "För kung och fosterland", competing for the opportunity to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki, Finland. On February 24, 2007 Magnus Uggla performed his song, and advanced to the Second Chance round the following Saturday, where he lost to Sonja Aldén in the last round of voting. Earlier that week, he had received complaints about the lyrics of the song which contains a line that could be interpreted as degrading to Polish people, but the Swedish Chancellor of Justice decided not to try this as a violation of the hate speech act.
His song "Vild Och Skild" will be Song Number 3 in Semi-final 1.04. ELIN ÖVERFJORD("Störst")At the end of last summer a young Swedish newcomer came from absolutely nowhere, and knocked us a out a bit with her brilliant debut single. It was Elin Överfjord and ’Nu’.
She's a 18 years old girl that already sang at the age of 10. Överfjord has already participated in Lilla Melodifestivalen, the selection for Sweden's representative for Junior Eurovision Song Contest and 2009, she was invited to sing at the World Cup for Hockey for Ladies, which ended succesfully both for Elin and for the Swedish hockey team that won gold.
At the age of 16, she became notified by the Swedish Idol and did not have to stand and queue to get to the jury for the audition, but she would be picked up and get VIP passes directly to the jury to present her song. But as she felt not ready, she declined.
Her passion is handball.... and singing of course, that's why she wants to participate in FF with her song "Störst" in order to represent Sweden on the biggest music stage in Europe and beyond.05. SMASH INTO PIECES("Bad Girl")Smash Into Pieces is an explosive rock band with worldwide aspirations – delivering their special blend of modern rock in a purely honest and attractive way. The young, highly ambitious five piece formed in Örebro, Sweden has built an impressive impact and following in their relatively short 5 year existence.
Smash Into Pieces, as the bands name go, stands for the vision they all share – the path, focus and will to realizing their career goals.
The band reached the semifinals of the TV-show “Sweden´s Got Talent” in 2009 but dropped out of the competition to sign a record deal with Ninetone Records (Takida, Corroded, Lillasyster etc). Things however really didn’t work out as planned and the collaboration with the label came to a end after just one released single “Fading” – a song still gaining a great deal of attention and airplay, especially from the leading rock radio station Bandit Rock 106.3 in Sweden.
After the band went separate ways with Nintetone Records in early 2010, the recording of the self titled, five-song EP took place during spring 2010 and was released not long after. Smash Into Pieces went through alot during 2010 – 2012 as an unsigned band when they finally after touring throughout all Scandinavia, signed a record deal with Gain / Sony Music (Europe, Mustasch, Hardcore Superstar etc) and released their long awaited debut album “Unbreakable” in April, 2013. First single “Colder” from debut album “Unbreakable” was a great success – with two weeks as #1 on the Itunes charts and a sold out first-ever Swedish tour called “The Colder Tour” in fall 2012, the future seems bright for Smash Into Pieces.
Smash Into Pieces truly makes modern rock, combining the phenomenal vocal and lyrical depth of Chris Adam Hedman Sörbye with the aggressive yet melodic guitar attacks from Benjamin Jennebo and Per Bergquist, and the hard hitting combination of bassist Viktor Vidlund and drummer Isak Snow.
The band picked up superb feedback from their hugely energetic live shows and in a short amount of time the band had the pleasure of sharing stage with among others Dead By April, Alter Bridge, Halestorm, Twisted Sisters, Raised Fists, Mustasch, former NVSC winner Amaranthe, Treat and many – many more.
Smash Into Pieces and their sound much definitive says arena. Together, their talent and chemistry will not be ignored or denied.
“It´s time to forget who you are and remember who you want to be! It´s time to Smash Into Pieces”
"Bad Girl" is the song, they are going to perform 5th in the first semi-final.06. ELIN LANTO("Toy Boy")Elin Lanto is a Swedish singer who has had several hits in her home country, including the number one "I Won't Cry." Lanto first came to prominence after her performance of her song "Money" in Melodifestivalen 2007. She also took part in Melodifestivalen 2010 with "Doctor Doctor" and in Fantasifestivalen 01 with "Love Made Me Stupid".
In 2009 Elin made her US debut by releasing the single "Discotheque" on the American iTunes Store, also featuring a new remix by Jonas von de Burg. On March 1, 2009, "Discotheque" was featured on Showtime's The L Word.
This time, she wants again to represent Sweden in NVSC with her song "Toy Boy".07. MOTO BOY("The Heart Is A Rebel")Moto Boy makes lush, romantic pop songs. With emotive pop and impressive operatic vocals, the result is hair-raising music that evokes feelings parallel to that of a Jeff Buckley song or a David Lynch movie.
Oskar Humlebo aka Moto Boy love affair with music started at the age of eight during a boy’s choir rehearsal in a London cathedral. He spent his teen years exploring jazz and experimental music. The Malmo based artist influences go from Tchaikowskij, and Angelo Badalamenti to Scott Walker and Siouxsie Sioux, but most of all he is inspired by great movies.
His latest album ”Lost in the call” was romantic, melancholic yet quite evocative filled with strings and a choir. It was recorded in different hotel rooms around the world and at the loft outside of Malmö where he resides. The loft is an old school turned into a steel parts factory, and then turned into a makeshift recording studio. He recorded almost everything alone and always at nighttime.
He recently composed music for the Gothenburg City Theatre and the play Lubiewo, which premiered in spring of 2012 and received widespread public praise for his compositions. He also joined The Cardigans as the lead guitar player on their Gran Turismo summer festival dates.
He'll start 7th with his song "The Heart Is A Rebel".08. HELENA PAPARIZOU("Set Your Heart On Me")Characteristic voice, impressive dance skills, stunning style - talented Greek singer Helena Paparizou has got them all. The Greek super star was born to Greek parents in 1982 in Borås, Sweden. She recorded her first album in 1999 with the duo "Antique". Antique represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2001 in Copenhagen and reached 3rd place. Throughout their 4 1/2 year old career together they met a tremendous amount of success in Greece, Sweden and had large fan bases in various countries all over Europe and the Middle East. After starting her solo career in Greece in late 2003 with the highly successful single "Anapandites Klisis", Helena again represents Greece in 2005 in the Eurovision Song Contest and wins with the song 'My Number One'. In 2014, Helena participated in the Swedish Melodifestivalen with the song 'Survivor' in order to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest and ended up 4th in the final. She also tried several times to represent Greece or Sweden in the North Vision Song Contest, ending up 2nd in Fantasifestivalen 05 with her song 'Save Me (This is an SOS)'. Most of Helena's albums and singles have been certified with Platinum or Gold in Greece, Sweden and Cyprus and have also reached good positions in airplay and singles charts in the rest of Europe as well as the USA
She'll be closing the show with her song "Set Your Heart On Me".
