Germany has confirmed participation in Eurovision Song Contest 2012. They automatically qualified for the final as part of the "Big Five". Germany selected their song and artist using a similar format to the one they used in 2010 and 2011. Their entry was decided on February 16, 2012 in a show called "Unser Star für Baku". Casting sessions took place in the city of Köln before the competition. Unser Star für Baku was broadcast on Das Erste and ProSieben. One of Germany's most successful artists, Thomas Dürr was the leader of the jury which gave expert opinions of all candidates. Sandra Riess and Steven Gätjen were the presenters of the show. There were 8 shows starting on January 12th and ending with the national final on February 16. 20 artists competed in the shows. In the 1st and 2nd shows, 10 artists battled in each with 5 from each moving on to the heats.
