I totally agree on the Umineko anime thing, really wish to read the visual novel, but my laptop is being a burden, since it won't install it properly. (Still trying, but won't work so far.)
Higurashi is the anime that got me in to the genre of horror, mystery and all of that kind of thing. It's almost like watching a detective.
I had the same feeling while watching Death Note. I really recommend you to watch it whenever you find the time to do so, it is really awesome and interesting.
In case of Shiki, I advise you to keep watching for a few episodes, even though it will be annoying in the beginning, 'cause it really does get better later on from like episode 4. I really liked it after I had watched it all, but if you asked me at the start, I would want you to just look up an other anime to watch.
Another is still one of my favorites too, and I also totally love Mei.
The ending was so very sad though, amazing but sad.
