In France I would say all the local dialects have disappeared. I think all the French speak French. After, few of them speak a local dialect, like Breton and Corsican, but hey are very few, and old people. Alsacian is a Germanic dialect, Occitan is almost a dead language (latin family, like French). We're not boring in France : we have one language  Well, personally I have never been to Bretagne (and to France at all), but a person I know, who knows Breton, told me that she succeeded to get some language practice during her stay in Bretagne - which means that (according to her) there is at least some minority who still can speak Breton - but of course, they all speak French as well. And still it's not so correct to call them dialects, I think, because it presumes that all of them are just varieties of French language - which is not true :/ (but yes, France truly did its best to murder its regional languages so most of them are dead or on the deathbed now...) Very few people speak Breton (which is btw not a French dialect but an ensemble of Celtic languages). The problem with regional languages is that when the French all spoke them, they couldn't understand each other, even of they live at 10km from each other! There is no and there were never unified regional languages like Welsh, Udmurt or Catalan in other countries and that's the main reason why nobody use them today. Even of there are still Breton or Occitan lessons in university, we can consider them dead languages... Sadly! |
