Well, if you take a look at the Ethiopian victory this edition, it is actually an American band with an Ethiopian member so I wouldn't consider the song a part of the country's music industry The fact many Africans (in this case Ethiopians) emigrated to the US or the UK, France and several other countries of the world with well-developed music industries even from a long time ago, simply because their countries were corrupt or because their countries were colonies of bigger countries, means that there is also a great chance for them to make a way bigger career than the one they would've normally done, had they remained in their country of origin Apparently there were not many Latvians abroad, in countries such as the ones I mentioned above, which used to "dominate" the music industry some years ago (as we can also see from their success in this contest). This is surely not bad, they just didn't want to leave their country and they decided to make music in it, which just sounds "unusual" to foreigners, as they don't really know your own culture and language Apart from this entry of the winner, you can see that all other entries of theirs that sounded traditional or more "ethnic" didn't do that well (apart from their 1st victory which was a pleasant surprise to me ). I can agree with you, but it still surprises me, because this band hasn't even been like known worldwide - even being american... I mean, I really love 80's and 90's music and I've heard a lot of it in my life, but it's the first time I hear about this band and I looked at their most successful songs - I haven't heard a single one of them before, which proves that they were not very popular at all... If we speak about latvians - trust me - there are thousands of latvians or people with latvian ancestry all over the world... there probably isn't a single country where there isn't at least 1 latvian (ok, there probably is, but still)... And there are many that have achieved a lot in their lives, like the guy who invented denim is latvian, many sportsmans, engineers etc., even a swedish former minister of foreign affairs is latvian, so there are multiple latvians with impressive achievements. BUT - the problem is that those people mostly have nothing to do with music, there are only a few musicians I've found and they are not something special... there are a couple that you already know, like Viktoria Modesta, which I already used and then there's a former Limp Bizkit DJ.. that's basically all - others are either unknown and don't have much about them on internet or they are opera singers or composers... so not very impressive I should say... I also didn't know many entries that Italy, United Kingdom or United States have sent here but which did well. The reason I said that about Ethiopia is not that the band is globally known; they just happen to be considered an American band and as the music industry there was being developed, in times when other countries of the world were still trying to gain independence or resolve their own problems, it's obvious that even a less known artist from such a country might have a more appealing song than one of the biggest stars of some other nation. I also didn't refer to Latvians in general; I just referred to singers. Of course there is a huge number of Latvians abroad who have succeeded in several aspects of engineering, politics, sports etc. and I guess almost every country in the world have such people living abroad As for the singers now, you've also said there are only a few musicians and with even a few of them having become at least a bit famous, you're just back to my basic point, that most of your artists stayed in Latvia to make their own music. Anyway I guess that it's all a matter of luck at the same time. A song you might dislike from your own country might be loved by players here

We can say the same thing for countries like or : we often see the same artists and the same songs. Most of the hosts use less than 5% of the potential of these countries. I think that many players were quite surprised by the national final I made for Monaco with only recent songs from newcomers. By the way, if you want to vote for the final choice, it's there...I've made a list of the French emerging artists that are on "active monitoring" this morning and I have 27 names... None of them have been ever used (except by me) as far as I know...

It's not exactly the same situation, but a similar one... because France and Italy have hundreds of musicians to choose from, while us - not so much. While to you people suggest multiple artists (doesn't matter if they are the same popular ones or not), for me I feel like Lauris Reiniks and Brainstorm are basically the only artists everyone know from Latvia... that's why I try to use as much as possible artists that no one has heard of or hasn't used... but that doesn't bring much of a success...

Perhaps because you don't have many music labels. I found this kind of problems in several countries. I imagine that many Latvian artists have a Russian label and finding them for a non-Latvian may be very difficult. I've already had this kind of issue when I was in charge of Cyprus (as a random country). Cypriot artists have all Greek or Turkish labels (it depends on the side of the island where they live) and when you try to find them, you have something like 20 Greeks for 1 Cypriot and same for the Turkish Cypriots. Searching Finnish artists for example is much more easier: there are many local labels and the Finnish language is easily recognisable even if you don't speak it: when you see something like "vagäantereynen" (I invented the word) in the title of a song, you know that you found a Finnish artist.

It's not about labels, because we have a few labels that most artists go through - the most popular one is MicRec, but there are more. And if someone can't record his song by the label, then they usually do it by themselves, without any specific labels. Latvians don't usually go to other countries to record a song through their labels...
