Somebody is disappointed I guess. But let's not be a bitch - I understand it pretty well (I mean it's not like Switzerland scored so many top 10 results in the last 20 years).

I kind of feel the same way about Eesti Laul The juries picking the songs always do a terrible job and there's songs that come out later, which are then revealed as "candidates" for EL which are often better than many of the songs that actually made it. Also they've been purposefully leaving out Estonian songs in the last few years despite many being submitted every year. Before 2016, Eesti Laul was basically constantly advertised as also our national selection for Eurovision, but since 2016 the contest has gotten so big they just advertise it as Eesti Laul. Many people who watch and vote in Eesti Laul don't actually watch and vote in Eurovision, so they only care about who wins EL and not really about how the song will do at ESC.

(i don't mean to sound like i'm talking over actual Finnish people, but I've looked into this and thought about it a lot lol) What the person who wrote that failed to realize is that the two UMK qualifications were in 2013 and 2014, before they brought in a new director in response to YLE complaining about poor viewing figures. From what I've heard out in the ESC fandom on Twitter, the atmosphere at YLE is more focused on making a show and spectacle of ESC participation rather than aiming for success. So to accomplish that, they canned the jury from 2012-14, who supported the acts that were somewhat successful, and started to scout for more buzzworthy acts, which included eventual UMK 2015 winners PKN, who made a giant splash and then landed at the bottom of the ESC scoreboard with a thud. The story for 2016 was some kind of overload, where slightly known names got scouted and then the poor voting system ended up letting an amateur with a song that got the "it's okay, I guess" vote win. And that ended as well as it can, with another NQ. To be fair, I don't know why Norma John failed. All I can think of is that it was in a HARD semifinal, going up against Portugal in the melancholia department, specifically, and that it might've just been a little too slow for the contest. That being said, UMK 2017 was still a shambles, and Norma John got an easy ride by being one of the few acts that had immediate (Finnish) televote and jury appeal. Giving the contest to MTV3 might help, but reverting to the old ethos of UMK, where new artists are mentored and groomed to compete on a large stage to gain fame at home (which is what happened for sure with Krista and to a lesser degree with Softengine, Pernilla is the odd one out lol) is a way more successful method. Maybe rebrand it so that the association of UMK with acts like Pää-Äijät, PKN, Club la Persé, and so on dies and more eager and seriously willing artists apply, but I think that all YLE needs for success is a change of mindset. It worked for Portugal when they stopped making FdC a Eurovision selection and returned it to a Portuguese music festival, so it might be the recipe for success for Finland in this new era of Eurovision.

Anssi Autio has been the producer of the UMK since the contest started (unless you mean someone else, e.g Harri Hakanen) Also, I guess MTV3 isn't really interested as the company hasn't made any money + they have already Idols and Tähdet tähdet ( Finnish version of Stjernekamp which is way popular here than Eurovision according to the viewing figures) so I doubt they are not interested. Also one of their journalists wrote that Eurovision is only about show and memes, so yeha I rather flop with YLE
