POLITICS OF DÝRIA
Dýria, known as the Republic of Dýria, is a unitary parliamentary republic, established officially after gaining independence from Decoria on December 1st, 1918. Despite gaining independence on this date, the country still cites 26th of August as their national day, as this was when all Decorian forces moved out of the country, and where the Dýrian government had control over the island.
PRESIDENT OF DÝRIA
DÝR: Forseti Dýriu
IRS: Uachtaráin na Díria
SJÓ: Forseti Dýriu
BRC: Prezidant Diria
The current Dýrian president is Ingibjörg Egilsdóttir, having been elected in 2016.
The Dýrian constitution states that the presidential term is 5 years, with the chance of the incumbent president running again after their first term is up. However, after a president has run for 10 years, the constitution doesn't allow for a 3rd term and they are forced to retire from their position after a presidential election has been held. Mrs. Egilsdóttir ran in 2016 and is eligible for re-election in 2021.
The president of Dýria has the following duties:
Appointing the government, including appointing the prime minister and other ministers, and accepts their resignations.
Appoints the judiciary;
Signs bills into law; however the president cannot veto a bill that was approved by the Alþingi (Dýrian parliament). However, the president is able to refer it to the Supreme Court to test it's constitutionality. The president must sign it if the Supreme Court upholds the bill, however in the case that it is seen as unconstitutional, the president will not sign it.
Representing Dýria in foreign affairs, including visiting other states and receiving other heads of state.
Up until 2016, the president was also the supreme commander of the defense forces. However, since President Egilsdóttir came into power, Dýria doesn't have a military. The country has a special agreement with Decoria regarding their defense, and as Dýria is a member of the Northern Union, the NU also guarantees defense to the country. The last supreme commander of the defense forces was Mairéad Ní Chatsdóttir, from 2005-April 2016.
In addition, the president must reside in Arðús an Þúchtaráin, in Dyflinnjaborg.
The president must be able to communicate in the 4 languages of Dýria fluently. Then, they can add any extra languages, most commonly Everish, given that it is widely used as a lingua-franca in Dýria.
