Andrélle Aretha Franklin - "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" [put this video over the audio for the recap (1:18+)] 1:25+
I chose this song because I feel like it perfectly represents Aretha as an artist while also being one of her most famous songs without being too obvious. No one can sing this song like she does and she's proven that numerous times over the years, with her performance at the Kennedy Center Honors 2015 considered one of her best overall.

Scarlett von Kock
Freddy Mercury (with Queen) • “The Show Must Go On”
I chose this because in my eyes the song really represents Freddy as an artist and as a person. Besides that, the song is a bop imo and I also feel like it’s less obvious than some other choices I could’ve made without not being iconic.

IMMORTAL LEGENDS AMY WINEHOUSE – LOVE IS A LOSING GAME Why do we love the one who doesn't love us back the hardest?
Like the other songs on the Back to Black album, this was written during a difficult time in Winehouse's life. Her then boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil had abandoned her to return to his previous girlfriend, leaving Amy devastated. After the songs were written he returned and they got married in 2007. However, at the time Winehouse was emotionally fragile but she chose to use her pain as raw material for her songs, which she found to be a healing experience. She explained to Mojo Magazine January 2008: "I'm not frightened of appearing vulnerable. I write songs about stuff that I can't really get past emotionally-and then I feel better." For you I was a flame Love is a losing game Five story fire as you came Love is a losing game One I wish I never played Oh what a mess we made And now the final frame Love is a losing game
Played out by the band Love is a losing hand More than I could stand Love is a losing hand Self professed, profound 'Til the chips were down Know you're a gambling man Love is a losing hand
Though I betted blind Love is a fate resigned Memories mar my mind Love, it is a fate resigned Over futile odds And laughed at by the gods And now the final frame Love is a losing game

Shemalena GomezMusic VideoAudio (longer version without sound effects)Whitney Houston - "So Emotional"Whitney is a singer who had numerous hits throughout her lifetime, but of those only one or two are songs people really remember, therefore I felt like I had a good amount of songs to pick from for this week. Whilst the majority of Whitney's songs are huge, R&B-flavoured power ballads, "So Emotional" and a handful of her other earlier work are pure 80s synth/dancepop, a genre people often forget she dabbled in until they remember "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" is also by her. This is why I felt like "So Emotional" was a great choice for this week, because amongst other reasons, the song is a massive banger and stands out well, in my opinion. 2:58+ (video); 3:12+ (audio)

Michael Jackson - "Bad" (3:08+)
As one of the most iconic singers of all time, it was difficult to choose a song of Michael's that was the perfect balance between not being too obvious and still being iconic, and I think "Bad" is the right embodiment of that balance.

David Bowie - "Life On Mars?" (0:55+)
I chose this song because it's one of David's best songs in my opinion (and according to the critics). I think it's a song with a deep meaning that represents him well as an artist.
“In Bowie’s lyric, a sullen teenage girl is sent off to the movies by her distracted parents, gets stood up by her friend (maybe her boyfriend) and dejectedly takes her seat in the stalls. It’s one of the few early rock-era songs in which a girl is simply the subject of a song, not an object of beauty or lust or distraction, and Bowie also neatly captures the essence of a teenager’s life: filled with slights and petty injustices, the constant restlessness (take the way nearly each line starts with a new conjunction), the ingrained tedium of your narrow world.”
