Scarlett von Kock & Tracy Martel
Angelic | Devilish | Lisa Gerrard • "Elysium" | Black Tape for a Blue girl • "Fin de siècle" | | | We decided to go for Elysium mainly due to it's wonderful sound, which is the definition of angelic. This is our imagination of how heaven sounds like and Lisa's amazing voice brings the Elysium to life. The fact that this is sung in a fantasy language adds to the etherial vibe of the song. | This song was chosen because we found it to sound really dark and mysterious, to the point of being borderline creepy. Additionally, the lyrics talk about how cold this world and how painful life is, as you can see here. The devil is probably happy to see lyrics like these being written. |

Jessica Ellen Cornish & Aless BrasilAngelic Bear's Den - "Elysium" (2:42+)
Elysium is "the dwelling place of the blessed after death".
Brother do you believe in an afterlife Where our souls will both collide In some great Elysium Way up in the sky Free from our shackles, our chains Our mouths, our brains We'll open all the gates And we will walk careless Straight into the light
I've never felt so enlightened With every page I turn I only find myself feeling more alone Posing questions to a silent universe My very thoughts a curse They just seem to multiply Forever in my mind
Brother don't grow up Brother please never grow up
Hold out against the night Guard your hope with your life For the darkness, she will come Oh and you will have nowhere left to run
Oh but your eyes are wider than mine And help me to sleep I just hope that age does not erase All that you see Don't let bitterness become you Your only hopes are all within you
Hold out against the night Guard your hope with your life
Devilish serpentwithfeet - "penance" (1:51+)
Penance is "an act of self-abasement, mortification, or devotion performed to show sorrow or repentance for sin".
Somehow though I am unkind grace flirts with me While I model my anger after the sun's disregard Enemies gather to dance with me Who is so impatient with karma? Who would block my wicked reward? And shower me with their blindness with a love far too ripened?
A mercy is in retrograde A mercy is in retrograde
Judgment has run from my door Swarms of flies have brought honey and much much more for me to be ashamed of My evil has not been appraised
A mercy is in retrograde A mercy is in retrograde
Oh

HEAVENLY REVENGE LEFTERIANA & MADAME SHEILA ANGELIC SONG PENELOPE TRAPPES – "CARRY ME"
Timeslot: 1.45+
| DEVILISH SONG KING WOMAN – "MANNA"
Timeslot: 3.56+
|
Despite its dark and dramatic funereal march, lyrically "Carry Me" is positive, exploring a subliminal knowingness that love is the only guide through a chaotic and sometimes painful life. This track is an entrancing, percussive-led return that places those metallic beats against sighing vocal harmonies and buzzing, unsettling electronics. While delivering these musical treasures, it makes you feel like you are in heaven, mainly what this challenge is about.
On the other hand, in "Manna", the black-and-white visual follows a young woman who rises up from the bog one day, and embarks on a surreal, barefoot journey through swamps and forests, encountering mysterious figures and dark magic along the way. It fits in with the song's out there guitar work, the band riffing these huge sounding parts that just reverberate out into space. She eventually comes across another woman in the woods, as she sprawls out across the stranger's lap. From there, she seems to warp through the woods, coming in contact with some pretty unexplainable sights that are beyond odd. The song comes to a chugging end, with singer Kristina Esfandiari taking things out into the cosmos while layers of guitar buzz under her voice, giving you the real devilish athosphere.

Andrélle & Phoebe Struts aka Team Phélle
Angelic song: | Devilish song: | | | Aneta Langerová "Tráva" 2:27+ | Ekat Bork "Fear" 1:28+
| Lyrics (English translation): I am just like a grass used to grow in pale night I intersect earthen sky by little roots Cooling rain is falling The storm is sounding and hastening Distant land Still beautifully smells and has the strength, smells and has the strength
I know crows' wings I sleep in their shadow Eyes of yours can't see my white body Now my new home is a Heather, moss and grass I'll be there, where blue cornflowers will bloom
It's dawning above me, the horizon is changing its colour I'm touching rays, stones in my palms are warming Bells are fading but my soul is young Is waking up from the sleep and is getting up Distant land Still beautifully smells and has the strength, smells and has the strength
I know crows' wings I sleep in their shadow Eyes of yours can't see my white body Now my new home is a Heather, moss and grass I'll be there, where blue cornflowers will bloom
| Lyrics: Dark. You're near It blinds. My soul Dark hears light, I know
I'm not afraid…. to love
Because you hurt my love Because you shout too loud Because you're feared
Because you keep my soul Because you know who I am Because you make me weird
Because you know who I am Because you make me weird
Because you hurt my love Because you shout too loud
| Over the years, modern culture has symbolized angels and the idea of something being "angelic" as a man's personal helper; who will encourage him, help him overcome his problems and make his dreams and wishes come true, whether that "angel" is, as religion suggests, a spiritual deity, another person (friend, relative, lover), or even the man himself.
Looking at "Tráva"'s lyrics, we can sense a feeling of melancholy at the beginning, and then it all changes in the third verse. "It's dawning above me, the horizon is changing its colour " ("Nade mnou svítá horizont, barvu mění"), Aneta gets the power, the support, the encouragement from that "angel", that makes her feel like the world around her changes and makes her feel more positive, more excited, and more hopeful for what's to come. Then she falls back to that melancholy in the fourth verse, waiting for that "angel", waiting for the strength in herself to return. Not only did we find the lyrics and the meaning of the song really fitting for the challenge, but we also believe that the soothing and relaxing sound of the song gives you that "angelic" and "heavenly" feeling that we are expected to present this week. | Modern culture defines "the devil" as a man's saboteur, as something that will not let the man live freely (e.g. insecurities) and will continue to, in a way, "haunt" the man until he manages to get free and let go of whatever that "devil" is (spiritual deity, person, the man himself).
In the song, Ekat Bork similarizes a person who has exploited her, who has mistreated her, who has misused her in the past with the the deity of the devil/the satan. As we can see in the lyrics of the song, Ekat feels that that person has hurt her (love), that they keep her (soul) trapped, not giving her the chance to let go of that past, negative experience and move on.
We believe that this, along with the creepy and unusual sound of the song makes "Fear" a fitting choice for the category. |

"Light of Nibel" Gareth Coker feat. Aeralie Brighton
"Light of Nibel" is essentially an instrumental track, though it does include vocals by Aeralie Brighton as well, just no lyrics. We'd call this an instrumental due to the fact that the vocals themselves feel more like an instrument themselves, blending very nicely into the backing instrumentation. The vocals are also one of the reasons we picked this song, as to us, it definitely has that light, otherwordly sound that reminds you of something angelic, and this especially shines through the vocals - the lack of lyrics, in our opinion, is what makes this song sound heavenly and angelic.
1:29+ | Devilish
"The Abyss" Chelsea Wolfe
"The Abyss" is an extremely good fit, in our opinion, for the devilish category. The overall ambience of the song is fantastically creepy, chaotic and, at times, outright hellish. The broken, atonal piano playing in the background, the broken-sounding strings that kick in towards the end, and of course Chelsea's extremely outlandish and airy vocals make this song sound almost like it's straight out of a horror movie, or the kind of soundtrack you'd expect to hear in a haunted house.
2:34+
| One thing that I would like to point out as well, that, in my opinion, makes our set unique, is the fact that neither of the songs we have picked for this challenge have music videos, thus relying purely on the soundscape, ambience and atmosphere in order to envoke angelic and devilish themes.
