Hi guys! I want to make a thread dedicated to this, and keep it separate from the rest of the general discussion thread. Mods feel free to delete if inappropriate, but let me know privately.
Let's talk about the recent passing of Article 13 (boooo, hissss). What seems like a 'beneficial' policy for copyright owners results in make claims and block any video uploaded at any time from the past, because it contains a snippet of the music video or track. Particularly to blame are WMG (Warner Music Group) and UMG (Universal Music Group) music videos, at least in my case.
I don't live in the EU, but I'm still affected by copyright claims. It's affecting a lot of the videos in our community. About 4 or 5 of my 50SS videos have been blocked in the last three days.
What concerns me most are any recaps which are linked to in various posts in our forum. Meaning a video could just go missing. I care so very much about keeping history recorded, so the threat of losing access to videos posted by people because they are no longer a part of our community is a sad punishment of what recap videos do for us as a whole. Maybe the contest manager is awesome-possum and can re-upload them, but most will not be, and we'll have to rely on Wikis to know how certain songs scored or what happened in certain contest editions.
This is besides the fact that each video creator on this forum has had the experience of having to re-upload videos multiple times to get around copyright issues. I'll address this in a minute.
BUT, we first have to acknowledge what we are doing when we make these videos. For some of you this is obvious, but not everyone here makes videos, so I want to make sure it's in writing.
We *rip* videos from YouTube or other platforms and re-hash them into recap videos. Nothing of this process feels particularly "legal", but it isn't any different than when people would record music videos from a TV onto a VHS or DVD, or how we record the audio of a song using Audacity for free. Therefore we won't ever be (or shouldn't be) penalized for downloading videos or music.
What we get flagged for is when we re-upload the content without having a copyright. And if your channel is monetized, it's even worse, 'cuz obviously you shouldn't be making money off of someone else's work, even if in edited format. My channel remains un-monetized, and forever will be, because I fear monetizing your channel makes you more likely to be blocked (though now, who knows). Anyway, when a video is flagged, it sometimes stays online with a claim, which is cool. Claims that don't block videos may mean the video has to play an ad, or the video gets demonetized, but it gets to stay online. Good. But other times it gets blocked, which is not cool. The result of a "block" is what we are seeing now - videos disappearing without warning.
So... what can you do when your video is blocked?
We can continue to think creative ways around this issue, like creating a free website and embedding videos, or maybe using audio-only recaps. Or combine the video with different audio.
Again, my personal concern is about losing videos from the past that we'll never get back.
If you're reading this and you are the owner of a lot of contest recap videos that have been blocked, and if you don't plan on editing the videos or attempting to upload them again to YouTube, please consider creating some kind of space/folder to host these videos so that they don't disappear indefinitely. That way we can continue to link to them and refer to them when needed.
It's unfortunate. But I'm optimistic, and I look forward to continuing this discussion. Do you have any tips for uploading videos? What are your experiences in the last week? If the post stays up I'll edit things listed above to reflect what we know and what we've learned.
Thanks!

So... what can you do when your video is blocked?
- If the block is an "Audio Visual claim" you can change the 'visual' part of the claim by either filtering the video (there are some examples floating around in different contests) or replacing the video with a still image. This seems to work and it allows you to keep the song in the recap. It's the best kind of block to receive because you can still get the recap online and keep things consistent. You still need to reupload the video, which takes time, but it's a small penalty to pay.
- If the block is an "Audio claim" - this is harder because it's literally the audio itself that's the problem. All you can do is mess around with some of the settings and hope for the best. YouTube lets you "erase" or "replace" songs, but this is counter-intuitive for our purposes because you need to 'hear' what you are voting for. This bars some discussion among community members; I've not received a block based on just an audio claim.
- Or, you can use Google Drive or another video uploading site. No guarantees on how other websites handle copyright.
- If all else fails? Well, is it really that painful to ask your contestants to listen to a YouTube playlist instead? You should be listening to the full songs before voting anyway....
