Following the Arabic Night and the two-weeks voting for A Song for Lebanon • The Battle, the

Lebanese representative is now known.

The Lebanese entry for the 29th edition is:

Shirin El-Hage is a

Swedish singer, born in

Germany to two

Lebanese parents.

The song, talks of a relation she had with a man that was older than her and married, with a relation that became more than friendship,
but which didn't ended well. When they break up, Shirin asked herself if the relation would have taken a different path if they were older,
or how the relation would have ended if he was also 22yo, if they could get back on time and be together at that age,
if they would met each others before his wedding, have kids and didn't lost a lot of time to be with her.

Egyptian entry announced

Cairo - 9 August, 2225EET

As per announced at the Arabic Super Friday show, ERTU is now ready to announce which artist will be representing Egypt with which song.

The artist, Nadah El Shazly, is Egyptian-born and raised in Cairo. Joseph Burnett of the Quietus had this to say about her:

Nadah el Shazly is part of a burgeoning underground music scene in Egypt that has been rightly garnering more and more interest of late. Having started out in music in a Cairo punk band singing Misfits covers, El Shazly gradually moved into homemade electronic music before alighting on the mystical hybrid between rock, avant-garde music and electronica that forms the core of Ahwar (“marshlands” in Arabic).

Ahwar is the album on which the Egyptian entry is featured - as stated, it is an eclectic mix of genres that forms a crazily psychedelic atmosphere unheard of before in the north African music scene. The song itself - Palmyra - is not exactly a 'love at first listen' kind of song. It follows one single structure most of the time apart from a small interlude in the middle, however do not be mistaken: despite its repetitiveness, it is undeniably lush and full of detail.

The song itself is the first ever entry in the contest to use quarter tone notes (which you can hear in the synth line) - often associated with ethnic folk music not only from Egypt but from across the Middle East. It is also entirely in Arabic, the second ever Egyptian entry to be in its national language.
