Uhsting's Chart Top 50
I have been making charts of 10 years which documented my change in music taste over the years. I first started posting my weekly charts publicly on YouTube when top 50 personal charts are kind of a hit back in the days. It was received in the first year and then gradually dwindled as I moved to showcasing more non-mainstream stuff. There were ons and offs during these years because of time. There were also a couple of format changes in how I present the chart and how I rank the songs. There were a lot of methods trying to keep the chart sustainable in a way that the changes in position of the songs do not feel too systematic while the new entries could still be maintained to be the latest new releases. Currently, the method I'm using has been working nicely, which began in March 2020.
Method
There are two main procedures in creating the chart: (1) sourcing and (2) selecting.
Sourcing music is the most time-consuming part. Often there are more than 1000 new releases every week for quick listening. Thanks to Spotify, I am able to capture the new releases from different countries. Currently, I'm subscribed to the New Music Friday playlists in the British Isles, Australia and NZ, Canada, the United States, France, Spain, Latin America, Italy, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Finland, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Poland, Belgium, Iceland, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary, Portugal and Israel. Potentially, I might subscribe to the Philippines and Indonesia in the future but it depends on the amount of time I have and whether the new music there is close to my taste. Besides, there are a couple of EDM labels that I subscribe to for their latest releases and the genre playlists for new releases are very helpful: indie, rock, Eurovision, pride and contemporary classical (metal and punk will be trialed soon).
Spotify accounts for the most number of new songs in the top 50 every week. However, I also listen to songs from different personal charts and in particular different contests on this forum. Often, there are some amazing finds on this forum. I also subscribe to a couple of channels on YouTube which share different genres of new releases.
Selecting music is another essential part. I first jot down the songs that I like from going through the playlists. Then, I listen to them in full for the second time. Often, I am able to select most of them for the chart and some others might go for a third full listen to be included in the next week's chart. Finally, I listen to all the songs in full on the chart (top 50+bubbling under top 50) and rank them accordingly. Once again, it takes quite a lot of time to listen to all of them in full but I thoroughly enjoy listening to all of them. Obviously, the top 50 songs ranked will be included in the week's chart.
