Xoculd Yumngokzit #2
Xoculd Yumngokzit #2 features 10 entries of a diverse range of genres. In this round, 3 entries will qualify to the gold final. There are 2 categories in Xoculd Yumngokzit, Topio and Hamus. In short, Topio entries utilise the entirety of the length of the song to depict a breathtaking soundscape through different sounds, which are best to be enjoyed in full. Meanwhile, Hamus entries capture the listener's attention through a memorable hook of a few seconds using a creative combination of lyrics, instrumentation and vocals. Voting
In this round, voters are invited to rate each individual entry from 1 to 10 in whichever format they prefer, hence they can assign unique ratings to each entry or rate more than one song the same score. They are advised to listen to all entries in full. If necessary, I can host a listenthrough session to go through all the entries before the deadline. To access the voting, please refer to the big red box below.The entry highest average rating in each category will advance to the gold final. The third entry will be decided by the second or third highest average rating amongst all entries depending on the pre-qualified entries.

Norrisette "Whale House" "Whale House" starts off the national selection with a cacophany of sounds. The use of the whale sound effect echoes throughout the track which gives a haunting feeling, as if you are visiting a haunted house but with scary whales. This is accompanied by a variety of sounds and industrial synths. This is catchy but is diversive in the everlasting dissonance and frightening spoken voice. You should also take notice of the buildup to an epic drop at various points, with full listen highly encouraged to savour the eccentric soundscape. |
Jann "Promise" "Promise" then changes the mood entirely with a somber ballad. This song showcases Jann's falsetto vocals amazingly well. It begins with a piano section. Despite produced by a booming producer SARAPATA, this song is surprisingly light with synths. This allows the emotional delivery to be focused on, as the brooding instrumental leads to a marvellous climax at the end, destined to capture your attention. |
Prospa, KETTAMA "Close Your Eyes" "Close Your Eyes" is a wonderful electronica epic. This genre has quite a market in the UK and there are a couple of well-produced instrumental tracks. However, this captures my attention a lot as it takes its time to craft a breathtaking soundscape, from the use of organs to the buildup to a big emphatic drop of synths. The recap hopefully captures this awe-inspiring moment. |
Holy Wars "21ST CENTURY BITCH" "21ST CENTURY BITCH" is a departure of the previous somber entries. This is high-energy rock, sung by Kat Leon. You can really feel the heat in both the instrumentation and the vocals. From the buildup to the chorus, the melody line flows well and grapples your attention with fluctuation in pitch and changes in vocal styles and effects. |
Simon Goff "Vale" "Vale" is a beautiful contemporary classical or orchestral piece. This piece relies on the long-held notes and the ambient accompaniment. The visuals in the video paint the soundscape well. The motif repeats itself every so often but the progression is what elevates the song. The uneasiness from the instrumentation though jarring actually makes it magical, and hopefully you will get some goosebumps at that part too! |
Leikeli47 "BITM" "BITM" changes the direction of the pacing of the order of songs. This is another upbeat banger but with personality. The flow is smooth as Leikeli47 raps confidently. I love the production as well as it creates suspense nicely which keeps me anticipated. The chorus is powerful and the relative lack of after-production works well. |
Teodor Wolgers "Abandoned Places" "Abandoned Places" is similar to "Vale" but the instrumentation is a lot more traditional with the main use of piano and violin and some hints of synths. The melody line is wonderful and it evolves into a contemplative scene towards the end of the piece. It is difficult to pick the recap slot for this piece but I can guarantee you will get a better grasp in full. |
MPL "Ma bouche" "Ma bouche" is energetic and is the only indie folk song in this selection. The best part is the instrumental drop which is unique and regional. The vocal style is interesting too. There is a lot to unpack within 3 minutes, and surely you don't want to miss the shriek at the end as shown in the recap! |
Jockstrap "Concrete Over Water" "Concrete Over Water" for me is like a sequel of "The City". It features more of the beautiful part of "The City" and mixes in the jarring part of the same song. The result is an epic that takes you on a wild ride. This is the forte of Jockstrap. They are able to make something really beautiful but they are not afraid of experimenting with sounds, and I think this song fully describes them. |
TT The Artist, Rony Rex, Psylla "Heat" "Heat" is banger. There is a lot of effort put into both the vocal delivery and the instrumentation. The verses focus on TT The Artist's confidently rapping and slaying, and then comes the instrumental drop which is loaded with catchy synths and drums, finally bringing everything together, just like how it is in the recap. |
