Geneva • 20 June 2023Switzerland brings the medieval folk of the edition! After a long period of time, negotiations and even a possible National Final, Switzerland reveals the song that has been chosen internally among the proposals received to SRG SSR. The representatives who will carry our flag in the neighbouring country of Austria are...
Eluveitie & Faun
Eluveitie is a Swiss folk metal band from Winterthur, founded in 2002 by Chrigel Glanzmann. The band's style incorporates characteristics of melodic death metal combined with the melodies of traditional Celtic music. They use traditional European instruments, including the hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes, amidst guitars and both clean and harsh vocals. Their lyrics include references to Celtic mythology, particularly of Celtic Gaul. For this occasion they are accompanied by the German band Faun, formed in 1998. The originality of their music style is that it falls back to "old" instruments, focusing on pagan folk, darkwave, and medieval music. The vocals are performed in a variety of languages, including German, English, Latin, Greek, and Scandinavian languages. Their instruments include Celtic harp, Swedish nyckelharpa, hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, cittern, flutes, and many others.
Their song is inspired by Celtic mythology, coupled with Nordic musical elements and the use of the instrument hurdy-gurdy; creating a unique piece of music that is hard to forget. It will also mark the debut of the Welsh language in the history of the competition, as their song includes Welsh lyrics alluding to Gwydion, a magician, hero and trickster of Welsh mythology, character from whom the title of the song is taken from.
