Xoculd Yumngokzit #5 features 10 entries of a diverse range of genres. In this round, 3 entries will qualify to the gold final. There are 2 categories in Xoculd Yumngokzit, Topio and Hamus. In short, Topio entries utilise the entirety of the length of the song to depict a breathtaking soundscape through different sounds, which are best to be enjoyed in full. Meanwhile, Hamus entries capture the listener's attention through a memorable hook of a few seconds using a creative combination of lyrics, instrumentation and vocals. Voting
In this round, voters are invited to rate each individual entry from 1 to 10 in whichever format they prefer, hence they can assign unique ratings to each entry or rate more than one song the same score. They are advised to listen to all entries in full. To access the voting, please refer to the big red box below.The entry highest average rating in each category will advance to the gold final. The third entry will be decided by the second or third highest average rating amongst all entries depending on the pre-qualified entries.

Topio #1 Frode Fjellheim, Eldbjørg Hemsing, Arctic Philharmonic "Under the Arctic Moon" "Under the Arctic Moon" is a beautiful orchestral piece. Frode Fjellheim pens the piece with Eldbjørg Hemsing playing in the violin. It starts with a serene tune with minimal instrumentation. It also gives a mysterious vibe. It then builds to something fiery, aided by the timpani. The climatic motif is surely going to wow you. Then, it dies down as we go back to the same serene beginning vibe. It might be full of wintery landscapes but the music surely gives you fire. |
Hamus #1 LaiYing "FreeRider" "FreeRider" is a song from LaiYing, coming from the viral YouTube channel in Hong Kong: Pomato. This song talks about the annoyance to the people who do not contribute much in a group project but still hoping for a good grade. There is an emphasis of synths here, which is unusual in Hong Kong pop music. Nonetheless, this song gives you an energetic feel in a somewhat light but humourous theme. |
Topio #2 George FitzGerald "Setting Sun" "Setting Sun" is a nostalgic, yearning UK electronic track which evokes jubilant feelings. The RV is a collage of sped-up sunset scenes. As the name suggests, it puts you at a place where you watch and admire sunsets. I personally love the buildup to a somewhat subtle drop in the middle of the track. |
Hamus #2 Kaine Francesco "Young Poets" "Young Poets" is a touching song that is dedicated to the forgotten queer people in history. The music style and the video style borrow elements from the ancient past, such as the relatively traditional instrumentation and costumes. The best part is definitely the buildup at the bridge to the final chorus, as I love the harmony there. |
Topio #3 Fred again.. "Jungle" "Jungle" is perhaps the most popular entry in this national selection here, peaking at number 78 in the UK charts. This is the lead-up to the breakthrough of Fred again.. I love the drop of this song which features heavy bass and strong beats. It is a song that gets you jumping hard on the dancefloor. |
Hamus #3 Lady Londyn "Freak" "Freak" continues the dancey vibe of the previous entry. This gives off a lot of personality and the big production helps elevate the song further. The drop where the word "freak" is frequently uttered will surely send people in the club on overdrive. It is a feel-good song. The RV uses music videos of Lady London, which is another similar artist but different. |
| Topio #4 Ginevra Nervi "An Interior of Strange Beauty" You have to give credits to Ginevra Nervi, who single-handedly manages every aspect of this spectacular track "An Interior of Strange Beauty". She sings in the first half of the song which sets the tone of the track. Then, things start to get wild as she manipulates the synths to bring us to a haunting atmosphere. Certainly, the pounding bass is a highlight in the latter of the track, and the continuous dissonance in harmony and the rapid rhythms leave you wanting for more. I perhaps spent the most time in making the RV for this. The music video "Zmierzch" is used, which has a similar vibe. The most difficult part is to match the beat of the track to the change in scene. I hope you enjoy this RV as much as I do! |
Hamus #4 Boychik "Soft" Boychik came to my radar last year. There were a couple of songs I really like but "Soft" is quite special. They have a couple of amazing and beautiful ballads but "Soft" fully demonstrates their versatility. It is a catchy tune but with personality. Most of the song is upbeat but I especially like this buildup to a short climax at the end. The RV I used is sombr's "weak". Both songs focus on emotionality despite contrasting each other in mood. |
Topio #5 Kebu ft. saymory "Plyne kacha" Ukrainian experimental scene has been growing in the last couple of years. We had Drevona with Tonka last edition which is a catchy song but this has another vibe. It is quite slow that gives a haunting atmosphere, but it builds to something extremely grand at the end. The lyrics are from the Ukrainian folk song "Plyve kacha", which is a lament, a dialogue between a young soldier and their mother. It speaks about the tragedies of warfare. |
Hamus #5 LG (Team Genius) "I Mean Business" "I Mean Business" is a catchy pop song from LG (Team Genius). It is one of many I love from her latest collaboration with Position Music. It is full of joy. The RV I used is her "Put The Work In", which has a similar vibe. I especially love the brass instrumental in the drop, which complements the synths. |
