Kaine Francesco "Young Poets

"Young Poets" is a touching song that is dedicated to the forgotten queer people in history. The music style and the video style borrow elements from the ancient past, such as the relatively traditional instrumentation and costumes. The best part is definitely the buildup at the bridge to the final chorus, as I love the harmony there. This is a wild card act due to voting irregularities in the previous round.

This song is the third single from the album 'Loneliness Is Gone'. According to Kaine, the inspiration comes from "reading an insightful article on the lives and poetry of men who loved men in the First World War written by Kevin Childs". The baroque style and haunting electronic drums portray the sounds of the battlefield. It resembles "our own war against homophobia, transphobia & prejudice against the community".

Fred again.. "Jungle"

"Jungle" is perhaps the most popular entry in this national selection here, peaking at number 78 in the UK charts. This is the lead-up to the breakthrough of Fred again.. I love the drop of this song which features heavy bass and strong beats. It is a song that gets you jumping hard on the dancefloor.

The track samples Elley Duhé's "Immortal" and is a collaboration with producer Four Tet's Kieran Hebden. It is one of many "visceral" approach to dance music production, according to edm.com.

Lady Londyn "Freak"

"Freak" continues the dancey vibe of the previous entry. This gives off a lot of personality and the big production helps elevate the song further. The drop where the word "freak" is frequently uttered will surely send people in the club on overdrive. It is a feel-good song.

Lady Londyn's music seeks to inspire and empower people using her life experience as a trans person. "Freak" is part of her debut album 'Transgression', which showcases her "raw, unapologetic and rebellious" self. Her inspiration for this track stems from the resurgence of queer influences in the summer of 2022. Alongside dealing with a recent breakup, she channelled her energy to "Freak" as a means of freedom of expression. She also added, "I think if anyone is gonna profit from the LGBTQ+ community, it should be an artist who is giving back and has music that represents our very own autonomy."

Boychik "Soft"

Boychik came to my radar last year. There were a couple of songs I really like but "Soft" is quite special. They have a couple of amazing and beautiful ballads but "Soft" fully demonstrates their versatility. It is a catchy tune but with personality. Most of the song is upbeat but I especially like this buildup to a short climax at the end. The RV I used is sombr's "weak". Both songs focus on emotionality despite contrasting each other in mood.

"Soft" is an empowering queer anthem. Speaking of the song, they add, "Soft is a subversion anthem. I want to subvert the expectation that queers don’t hold power. The most powerful people I know are queer. Sissies adorning themselves with their effeminate armor every day when they leave the house. I wanted to sing for all the powerful, jagged, loud and angry queers that came before me."
