"AL SHAM (الشام)"

Elyanna is a Palestinian-Chilean singer-songwriter merging Arabic music with Latin rhythms to create an experimental Arab-pop sound that has captured a global audience. The reason I choose Elyanna's "Al Sham" is because I think it represents Palestinian identity and culture well. By blending traditional Arabic music with contemporary electronic elements, Elyanna truly crafts a sonic tapestry that encapsulates the rich heritage of her homeland.
"Al Sham," opens with ethereal, floating vocals before morphing to incorporate aggressive synths and drums. Described by Elyanna as an ode to the Algerian singer Cheikha Rimitti with an interpolation of her song N’ta Goudami (You Are Before Me) in the instrumentals and the lyrics largely based on the traditional folkloric poem Khamrat el Ḥobb (The Vintage Of Love) popularized as a song by the Aleppine Syrian tenor Sabah Fakhri, this song blends Levantine and North African cultural influences seamlessly. Elyanna pays tribute to both the musical predecents and also the heritage of Palestine.
The music video has the symbolic imagery of the golden heart with a dagger, and is a representation of the struggles and triumphs of the Palestinian people. The overall aesthetic of the video is a visual manifestation of the song's cultural richness and historical significance.

I wouldn't usually go with a male song but I believe this song encapsulates this episode's prompt rather well than
merely sending a song about trivial stuff by a Palestinian artist, which in my eyes would not cut it.
The lyrics carry a powerful and relevant message, while the instrumental showcases the musical traditions of Palestine.
The song title is inspired by the Al Deira hotel in Gaza which was bombed and destroyed by the I*F a couple of months ago.
Deira also means an "old city" in Arabic which I also relate to the fact that Jerusalem's old city quarter has been in fill Israhelli control.

Daremyth ● Queens for Freedom  LINA MAKOUL ● Fish Masari (لينا مخول - فش مصاري) For this week's challenge, I wanted to send song in arabic that would represent Palestine the best, avoiding sending a European artist who is half-Palestinian as another example. And I have decide that Lina's Makoul "Fish Masar" fits exactly what I would send for this weeek's challenge. |

Artist: Nemahsis
Song: You Wore It Better
Nemahsis, a Palestinian-Canadian, had this to say about this song when it released:
"My friend once wore this t-shirt and i wanted to look as cool as them so i bought a matching one. It took me years to comfortably wear it because i had convinced myself it didn't look as good on me as it did on them. When i wrote this song, i remembered this child size cheap niagara falls merch t-shirt and i just laughed a little."
Having moved to Canada when she was little, like many Palestinian families looking to have a better, freer life. But like many immigrants, she has struggled with fitting into the new countries identity whilst not letting go of her own Palestinian identity. "You Wore It Better" is all about knowing she doesn't fit into the Canadian stereotypes, but thats ok as she is making her own one, as much as it can hurt.

Lina Makoul
a powerful protest against censorship and a stirring tribute to those whose pain goes unheard, unseen, and unfelt.
Despite the fact that she has already been sent for this challenge, I felt like it would be a shame to make this song go unheard. "on mute" has no lyrics, but the song itself represents the anger and reaction to the censorship on the media for the ongoing aggression of the Israeli entity on Palestine.

The song choice for this episode is... Shu Ma Sar by Dana Salah !!!
Dana Salah is a Jordanian-Palestinian singer, songwriter, and musician, who I have found after doing some research on Palestinian artists. She has previously created music under a different name, but has always felt that there was something missing from her artistry. It was upon coming back to Jordan when she realized it was her Arab heritage - which is why she decided to start releasing music under her own name, as she has found herself in her culture.
The song Shu Ma Sar is a song that strongly represents Palestinian resilience and ability to withstand any circumstances. It is a fitting choice for the theme of this episode. And it's also a really good song.
