Miss Universe 2019It's that time of year again! Let's see how this year's "Olympics of Beauty" (... and public speaking) went.
Hi, Catsup Grease!MISS UNIVERSE South Africa - Zozibini Tunzi 1ST RUNNER-UP Puerto Rico - Madison Anderson
2nd RUNNER-UP Mexico - Sofia Aragón
TOP 5 Colombia - Gabriela Tafur Thailand - Paweensuda Drouin
TOP 10 France - Maëva Coucke Iceland - Birta Abiba Þórhallsdóttir Indonesia - Frederika Alexis Cull Peru - Kelin Rivera USA - Cheslie Kryst
TOP 20 Albania - Cindy Marina Brazil - Júlia Horta Croatia - Mia Rkman Dominican Republic - Clauvid Dály India - Vartika Singh Nigeria - Olutosin Araromi Philippines - Gazini Ganados Portugal - Sylvie Silva Venezuela - Thalía Olvino Vietnam - Hoàng Thùy
BEST NATIONAL COSTUME
Malaysia - Shweta Sekhon Philippines - Gazini Ganados (THEY MESSED UP THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THIS WTF?!?!?!? I'M LIVID!)
MISS CONGENIALITY Poland - Olga Buława
REVIEW:
Philippines was bound to flop. She was not a great speaker, and the fact that there was a speaking round before the swimsuit/evening gown portions was her ultimate undoing.
I'm happy with South Africa as the winner. She was in my radar, but she won me over tonight with her confidence and conviction. She becomes the first black girl to win for South Africa (the two previous South African winners were white), and the first black African to win since 2011. The new crown looks great on her!
The production this year was quite good. Despite the small venue, the stage was great and the sets were nice. And this year's backstage hosts were great. Ally Brooke was an okay performer, but it was nothing disastrous.
But that Best in National Costume fiasco... they messed that up big time. This tweet confirms it. At least even though my girl Philippines crashed and burned in the top 20, she has this for consolation. But I feel bad for Malaysia. I hope everything turns out okay on all sides. It's not as big of a deal as the 2015 flub.
I hope that next year, Miss Universe is held in a really good location. Atlanta was a nice new place to be in, but it didn't meet my expectations. The announcement of the venue was so late that the organization of the event was fairly rushed.
