ENTRY NO. 1
"FROZEN"
"Frozen" is a mid-tempo electronic ballad which has a layered sound enhanced by
synthesizers and strings, arranged by Craig Armstrong. The song begins with austere,
classical strings while the chord progression emphasizes tonic, submediant and flattened leading-tone chords.
For the second phrase, which includes a dramatic crescendo, rhythm and ambient electronic effects are added gradually.
Lyrically, the song is about a cold and emotionless man. In an interview with The New York Times,
Madonna commented that the lyrics to "Frozen" is built around:
Retaliation, revenge, hate, regret, that's what I deal with in "Frozen". Everyone's going to say, 'That's a
song about Carlos' (her ex-boyfriend), but it's not really; it's just about people in general

ENTRY NO. 2
"HUNG UP"
"Hung Up" received critical praise from reviewers, who believed that the track
would restore the singer's popularity, which had diminished following the release of her 2003 album
American Life. Critics suggested it was her best dance track to date and have compared
it favorably to other Madonna tracks in the same genre. They also complimented the
effective synchronization of the ABBA-sample with the actual song. "Hung Up"
became a worldwide commercial success, peaking atop the charts of 41 countries and earning a
place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The song uses the sound of a ticking clock to symbolize fear of wasted time, which was
incorporated by triple Grammy Winning composer Stuart Price, from the remix of
Gwen Stefani's 2004 single "What You Waiting For?". According to
Slant Magazine, the song embodies some of Madonna's old hits,
incorporating them into the song's pitched-upward vocals while presenting an archetypical key
change/tonicization during the bridge.

ENTRY NO. 3
"LIKE A PRAYER"
"Like a Prayer" is a pop rock song that incorporates elements of gospel and funk music.
The song begins with the sound of heavy rock guitar that is suddenly cut off after
a few seconds, and replaced with the choir and the sound of an organ. Madonna sings the
opening lines alongside the light sound of percussion, as drums start during the first verse. The percussion
and the choir sound are added interchangeably between the verses and the bridges, until the second chorus.
At this point the guitars start flickering from left to right, accompanied by a bubbling sequenced bassline.
Rikky Rooksby, author of The Complete Guide to the Music of Madonna, commented that
"Like a Prayer" was the most complex track that Madonna had ever attempted.
According to him, the complexity builds up more after the second chorus, in which the choir fully supports
Madonna's vocals and she re-utters the opening lines, but this time accompanied by a
synthesizer and drum beats. As Madonna sings the lines "Just like a prayer, your voice
can take me there, Just like, a muse to me, You're a mystery", an R&B-influenced voice backs her up
along with the choir. The song ends with a final repetition of the chorus and the singing of the choir
gradually fading out.
Madonna has a deep love on the importance of "Like a Prayer", saying:
"Like a Prayer" is a very important song to me. I felt the impact that it was going to make.
That song means a lot more to me than "Like a Virgin". I wrote it and it's from my heart.
It's a very spiritual song. I think I was much more spiritually in touch with the power of words
and music by the time I started recording the song and the album.

ENTRY NO. 4
"PAPA DON'T PREACH"
"Papa Don't Preach" is a dance-pop song with instrumentation from acoustic,
electric, and rhythm guitars, keyboards, and string arrangements.
The lyrics show Madonna's interest in her Roman Catholic upbringing,
as the song theme is about a teenage girl who admits to her father that she is pregnant and
refuses to have an abortion or give up the baby for adoption despite what her friends are telling
her to do. It is constructed in a verse-chorus form, with a bridge before the third and final chorus.
At the beginning, she addresses her father directly, asking him to talk to her as an adult, "You should know
by now that I'm not a baby". The transition to the chorus employs a more dramatic voice with a higher range,
ending nearly in cries as she sings the word "Please". Leading to the chorus, Madonna
switches to a pleading voice, singing the song's main hook in a high tone. During the bridge, the song
features a Spanish-inspired rhythm, one of the earliest examples of the influence that
Hispanic music had on Madonna's musical style.
As the song's popularity increased in the US, so did the criticism and support it
received from groups concerned with pregnancy and abortion. In July 1986, shortly after the release
of the video for "Papa Don't Preach", Madonna commented on the controversy
surrounding the song, to music critic Stephen Holden from The New York Times:
"Papa Don't Preach" is a message song that everyone is going to take the wrong way.
Immediately they're going to say I am advising every young girl to go out and get pregnant. When I first
heard the song, I thought it was silly. But then I thought, wait a minute, this song is really about a girl
who is making a decision in her life. She has a very close relationship with her father and wants
to maintain that closeness. To me it's a celebration of life. It says, 'I love you, father, and I love this man
and this child that is growing inside me'. Of course, who knows how it will end? But at least it starts off positive.

ENTRY NO. 5
"SORRY"
Musically, "Sorry" is an uptempo dance song containing layers of beats and strong vocal on the chorus.
"Sorry" was also one of the first tracks developed for the album and had numerous remix treatments
before the ultimate version of the track was finalized. One of the remixes was done by the Pet Shop Boys,
featuring added lyrics by the band. The actual song features a dance groove tempo. It talks about
personal empowerment and self-sufficiency, denoting a shift in focus of Madonna as
an artist from her previous songs about supremacy like "Everybody", "Vogue" or "Music" which
was centered around the subject of music itself.
In the United States, the song did not perform well due to an underplay on radio but was able to
reach the top of Billboard's dance charts and became one of the decade's most successful dance hits!
As of April 2010, the song has sold 366,000 digital units in the country.
