Splendid news from everyone's favourite Alpine country! After a swiftly commissioned change of delegations after the results of the twenty-sixth edition that saw the second victory for Ukraine and an rather appalling twentieth place for "Germany", Austria obtained a new mindset. The entire delegation was deported by Germany like in the good ol' days and replaced by a new one that has set its goals for Austria differently.

This morning, a first press conference was held. Coffee was widespread, dark humour present.
Unfortunately, no press member partaking at #prayforpopmusic was allowed in the building.


This very polite speech from the new Head of Delegation basically conveyed a deep desire for newness, for change among the entries sent. Something that started with the victory of Mynth, yet was discontinued and discredited. Upon further addressing the topic, the press were introduced into the new Austria.

An artist has been found and selected internally! And not just any artist, by all means. Many names were called to represent Austria, some returnees, some débutantes, some outright outrageous. However, the new delegation insisted on an early revelation, implying that the time is ripe for a new voice to enter the competition and show-case everyone what we are, at our core values under our skins, about.






1990 was a delightful year, when Anja Plaschg was born in the not-so-blue Styrian landscape, eventually attending and moving to Graz and later, Vienna. Genre-wise she is sorted into the experimental and neoclassical dark, with many electronic influences found in her songs that are mostly dominated by her supreme piano skills and vocal capabilities.

She has released three albums; Lovetune for Vacuum in 2009, Narrow in 2012 but most importantly, From Gas to Solid / You Are My Friend in October 2018; the latter placing third in the Austrian charts and being highly praised as an alternative/indie album, covering themes that deemed her attention as a mother; trauma, suicide, loss, gain, happiness, patterns, growth. A diverse release that is at the pinnacle of what Austria in this contest defines from now on. She will attend her European tour in Spring 2019, already having booked out two venues by this point.

ORF has confirmed that the song chosen as the eventual entry is included in her latest release "From Gas to Solid / You Are My Friend", making eleven original songs open to be sent for Austria. The entry itself will be chosen internally by a team of professionals and the music video shot and produced by the Austrian team.

Don't drink too much this New Year's Eve, for the reveal of the entry is scheduled post-midnight at 1st January 2019. What a way to enter the new year!
